What is a remote travel manager?

Remote Travel Managers are professionals who coordinate and oversee travel arrangements for individuals or organizations while working from a remote location. Their responsibilities include booking flights, hotels, and transportation, managing travel budgets, ensuring compliance with company policies, and handling any travel-related issues that arise. They rely heavily on digital communication tools and travel management software to perform their duties efficiently. This role is ideal for individuals with strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently.

How do remote travel managers effectively coordinate with clients and vendors across different time zones?

Remote Travel Managers frequently collaborate with clients, travel agents, and vendors who are often located in various time zones. To manage this, they typically utilize scheduling tools, maintain flexible working hours, and set clear communication protocols to ensure timely responses. Proactive planning, regular status updates, and the use of collaboration platforms help streamline communication and avoid misunderstandings. Adapting to these challenges is key to providing seamless travel experiences and maintaining strong professional relationships.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote travel manager, and why are they important?

To excel as a Remote Travel Manager, you need expertise in travel planning, vendor negotiation, and customer service, often backed by experience in the travel industry or a related certification like Certified Travel Associate (CTA). Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication enable you to coordinate complex itineraries and resolve issues efficiently. These abilities are crucial for ensuring seamless travel experiences and maintaining client satisfaction while working remotely.

Job description

The Team:

Unsecured Installments is one of Upstart's core lending products, helping borrowers access credit through a seamless, digitally native experience. The team owns critical parts of the borrower journey across offer generation, pricing, underwriting, funding, and borrower experience, while working closely with the broader lending platform that powers Upstart at scale. Recent work has focused on improving borrower flows, repricing and rate flexibility, partnership experiences, and the overall quality of the customer-facing experience.

As a Software Engineer on the Unsecured Installments team, you'll build and improve the frontend and full-stack experiences that borrowers interact with directly. You'll work primarily in React and TypeScript to ship polished, reliable, high-performing borrower flows, while partnering with backend, product, and design to connect those experiences to the systems behind pricing, underwriting, and funding. This is a hands-on role where you'll own meaningful features end to end and grow your technical depth on a business-critical product.

How you'll make an impact

  • Build and maintain borrower-facing web experiences using React and TypeScript, translating designs and product requirements into clean, responsive, accessible interfaces.

  • Work across the stack to connect frontend experiences to backend services and APIs, contributing to full-stack features that span the borrower journey.

  • Partner closely with product managers, designers, and backend engineers to scope, build, and ship features that improve borrower flows and reduce friction.

  • Write well-tested, maintainable code and participate in code reviews, helping raise the quality and consistency of the team's frontend codebase.

  • Contribute to performance, reliability, and observability of the experiences you own, and help debug and resolve issues across environments.

  • Support experimentation and iterative improvements to borrower flows, using data and feedback to inform what gets built next.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience) and 4-5+ years of professional software engineering experience.

  • Strong proficiency building web applications with React and TypeScript, including component design, state management, and consuming REST or GraphQL APIs.

  • Full-stack experience contributing to backend services and APIs in a language such as Python, Java, Kotlin, Ruby, or Node.js.

  • Solid fundamentals in writing tested, maintainable code and collaborating through code review in a team environment.

  • Ability to work effectively with product and design partners to deliver features from requirements through production.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building consumer-facing products with attention to performance, accessibility, and user experience.

  • Familiarity with modern frontend tooling and testing frameworks (e.g., Jest, React Testing Library, Cypress) and CI/CD workflows.

  • Exposure to fintech, lending, payments, or other regulated financial products with complex user journeys.

  • Experience with experimentation, A/B testing, or feature-flagging in production environments.

  • Active use of AI tools in engineering workflows, with a thoughtful perspective on how AI is reshaping software development.

  • Passion for building products that expand access to credit and improve financial outcomes for consumers.
