Technical Writer (Government Contract) โ€“ Job DescriptionPosition Summary

The Technical Writer will support federal government programs by developing, editing, and maintaining high-quality technical documentation, reports, and communication materials. This role collaborates with program managers, engineers, subject matter experts (SMEs), and stakeholders to translate complex technical and operational information into clear, accurate, and compliant documentation aligned with government standards and contract requirements.

The Technical Writer ensures all documentation supports program deliverables, complies with federal guidelines, and facilitates effective communication across technical and non-technical audiences.


Key ResponsibilitiesTechnical Documentation Development
  • Develop, write, and maintain technical documentation including system documentation, user guides, SOPs, training materials, and operational manuals.

  • Translate complex technical concepts into clear, concise documentation suitable for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Create and update documentation supporting system architecture, software development, cybersecurity, and infrastructure initiatives.

Government Deliverables & Compliance
  • Prepare contract deliverables including technical reports, white papers, program documentation, and status reports in accordance with federal contract requirements.

  • Ensure documentation complies with federal standards, agency policies, and contract deliverable timelines.

  • Support proposal development, documentation review cycles, and quality assurance processes.

Collaboration & Knowledge Management
  • Work closely with subject matter experts, engineers, program managers, and analysts to gather technical information.

  • Facilitate documentation reviews and incorporate feedback from government stakeholders and internal teams.

  • Maintain document repositories, version control systems, and knowledge management systems.

Editing & Quality Assurance

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Technical Writing, English, Communications, Information Technology, or a related field.

  • 3โ€“7+ years of technical writing experience supporting federal government programs or government contractors.

  • Experience producing documentation for IT systems, software development, cybersecurity, or data platforms.

  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio).

  • Experience with documentation tools such as SharePoint, Confluence, or knowledge management platforms.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with strong attention to detail.

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple documentation deliverables in a fast-paced government contracting environment.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting federal agencies (e.g., DHS, DOE, DoD, HHS, etc.).
