What is a Remote Systems Engineer?

A Remote Systems Engineer is an IT professional who designs, implements, manages, and maintains computer systems and networks for organizations while working from a remote location. They ensure that systems are reliable, secure, and perform optimally, often troubleshooting issues and deploying updates without being physically present onsite. Remote Systems Engineers typically use remote access tools to monitor systems, collaborate with teams, and provide technical support. Their work is essential for companies with distributed workforces or cloud-based infrastructure.

What Does a Remote Systems Engineer Do?

The job of a remote systems engineer is to develop, test, and maintain a computer network system for a company. Your duties include implementing updates, handling technical issues (including connectivity issues and VPN setup), performing system administration tasks, documenting changes, preparing reports, and developing new infrastructure as needed. Your responsibilities as a remote systems engineer are to ensure the software system and network connectivity meet the needs of the business environment and provide user support. This is a work from home position that involves coordinating with IT and management.

How does a Remote Systems Engineer typically collaborate with on-site IT teams and other departments?

As a Remote Systems Engineer, you will frequently coordinate with on-site IT staff and cross-functional teams through virtual meetings, project management tools, and shared documentation. Effective communication and clear documentation are crucial, as you may not be physically present to troubleshoot or implement solutions. You can expect to rely heavily on remote access tools and cloud-based platforms to monitor, maintain, and update systems. Building strong relationships with team members and setting clear expectations helps ensure seamless collaboration and project success, even from a distance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Systems Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Systems Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science, systems administration, and network management, often supported by a relevant degree or certifications such as CompTIA Network+ or Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator. Proficiency with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure), automation tools (like Ansible or Puppet), and monitoring systems is typically required. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and time-management skills help in collaborating with distributed teams and resolving issues independently. These skills and qualities are crucial for maintaining reliable system operations and ensuring seamless remote support in a distributed work environment.

Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an AI Engineer based in Netherlands.

As an AI Engineer, you will design, build, and deploy cutting-edge AI solutions that deliver real business value within a modern SaaS environment. Working as part of a collaborative Data & AI team, you will develop production-ready LLM applications, RAG pipelines, and AI-powered workflows while partnering closely with engineering and business stakeholders. This role offers end-to-end ownership across the AI development lifecycle, from problem definition and model implementation to deployment and monitoring. You'll contribute to scalable cloud-based solutions while leveraging the latest AI development tools to accelerate innovation. If you're passionate about applied AI, enjoy solving complex technical challenges, and thrive in a remote, high-autonomy environment, this is an exciting opportunity to shape impactful AI products.

Accountabilities
  • Design, develop, and deploy production-ready AI solutions using Large Language Models (LLMs), Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), and other machine learning techniques.
  • Own the end-to-end lifecycle of AI features, including problem definition, data preparation, model development, evaluation, deployment, monitoring, and continuous improvement.
  • Build and maintain scalable AI pipelines for data preprocessing, feature engineering, model inference, and application integration.
  • Integrate AI capabilities into cloud-based infrastructure while ensuring performance, scalability, reliability, and security.
  • Collaborate closely with software engineers, product teams, and business stakeholders to embed AI features into customer-facing products and internal systems.
  • Leverage modern AI-assisted development tools to improve engineering productivity and contribute to AI-driven development best practices.
  • Identify new opportunities where AI can optimize workflows, enhance products, and generate measurable business impact.
Requirements
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in software development, including at least 1 year focused on AI or machine learning engineering.
  • Proven experience building and deploying LLM-based applications or Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) solutions in production environments.
  • Strong programming skills in Python, with hands-on experience using FastAPI, asynchronous programming, and modern backend development practices.
  • Practical experience integrating AI solutions into cloud platforms, preferably AWS, with an understanding of scalable distributed systems.
  • Solid knowledge of database technologies, data processing, algorithm design, statistics, and machine learning fundamentals.
  • Experience using AI-powered development tools such as Cursor, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or similar within professional engineering workflows.
  • Familiarity with MLOps concepts, vector databases, semantic search technologies, and AI frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, LangChain, or equivalent is an advantage.
  • Strong communication skills, a collaborative mindset, and the ability to work effectively within remote, asynchronous, cross-functional teams.
  • Self-motivated, curious, and proactive, with a strong sense of ownership and a continuous learning mindset.
Benefits
  • Competitive salary package.
  • Full-time remote-first role with flexibility to work from Germany.
  • Asynchronous working environment that promotes autonomy and work-life balance.
  • Opportunity to work abroad temporarily while remaining part of the team.
  • Career development and internal growth opportunities within a rapidly expanding international organization.
  • Company-provided hardware and equipment to ensure a productive working environment from day one.
  • Collaborative, diverse, and inclusive international culture focused on innovation and continuous learning.
  • Opportunity to work with modern AI technologies, cloud platforms, and cutting-edge development tools.
