Remote Systems Architect information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Systems Architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Systems Architect, you need deep expertise in systems design, cloud infrastructure, and software architecture, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with tools such as AWS, Azure, architecture modeling software, and relevant certifications like AWS Certified Solutions Architect are highly valued. Strong communication, problem-solving, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for collaborating with distributed teams and clients. These skills ensure scalable, secure, and efficient system solutions while enabling effective remote teamwork and project delivery.

How do Remote Systems Architects typically collaborate with cross-functional teams when designing complex system solutions?

Remote Systems Architects often serve as a communication bridge between engineering, product, and business teams, ensuring that system designs align with both technical requirements and business objectives. Collaboration is typically facilitated through regular virtual meetings, detailed documentation, and cloud-based project management tools. Architects are responsible for leading design discussions, gathering feedback from stakeholders, and iterating on solutions to address evolving needs. This role requires strong communication skills and adaptability to effectively manage contributions from colleagues in different locations and time zones.

What is the difference between Remote Systems Architect vs Remote Network Engineer?

AspectRemote Systems ArchitectRemote Network Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in computer science or IT, plus certifications like TOGAF or AWS Certified Solutions ArchitectOften requires a degree in networking or IT, with certifications such as Cisco CCNA or CCNP
Work EnvironmentDesigns and plans overall system architecture, often in a project-based or consulting settingFocuses on configuring, maintaining, and troubleshooting network infrastructure
Industry UsageUsed across industries for system design, cloud solutions, and enterprise architecturePrimarily in telecommunications, data centers, and enterprise network management

While both roles involve IT infrastructure, a Remote Systems Architect focuses on designing comprehensive system solutions, whereas a Remote Network Engineer specializes in implementing and maintaining network hardware and connectivity. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

What are Remote Systems Architects?

Remote Systems Architects are IT professionals who design and oversee the structure of complex computer systems, networks, or software applications from a remote location. They are responsible for making high-level decisions about system architecture, ensuring that systems are scalable, secure, and meet the needs of the business. Working remotely, they collaborate with stakeholders, developers, and other IT staff through digital communication tools. Their role often involves creating architectural blueprints, selecting appropriate technologies, and providing technical guidance throughout a project’s lifecycle.

Job description

We are seeking a Systems Architect to design, optimize, and integrate complex system architectures that enable effective data flow, interoperability, and mission performance. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of how systems connect, communicate, and exchange data, and will be responsible for defining architectural interfaces, data-sharing strategies, and output requirements across multiple systems and components.

Key Responsibilities:

Architecture Design & Integration:

  • Determine optimal methods for interconnecting systems to enhance overall architecture performance, scalability, and reliability.
  • Design and define system interfaces, integration pathways, and communication mechanisms.

Data Architecture & Interoperability:

  • Identify what data should be shared across systems to support mission needs, analytics, and operational decision-making.
  • Define the data outputs the architecture must generate, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and alignment with user or mission requirements.
  • Develop data flow diagrams, interface control documents (ICDs), and architecture models.

Performance Optimization:

  • Evaluate existing system architectures to identify opportunities for improved performance, reduced latency, and increased system resilience.
  • Recommend architectural enhancements or system changes based on technical analysis and best practices.

Requirements Analysis & Translation:

  • Work with stakeholders to understand mission or customer requirements and translate them into architectural designs, data needs, and integration specifications.
  • Ensure that architectural solutions meet technical, schedule, security, and cost constraints.

Collaboration & Technical Leadership:

  • Collaborate with engineers, program managers, and external partners to ensure coherent system-of-systems integration.
  • Provide architectural guidance throughout development, testing, and deployment phases.

*This position is designed to be flexible, with responsibilities evolving to meet business needs and enable individual growth.

Requirements:

  • TS/SCI (will need to obtain a CI Poly)
  • Experience with remote sensing systems, including satellite and airborne platforms
  • Expertise in designing, integrating, and optimizing complex system architectures
  • Strong knowledge of system interoperability, interface design, and system-to-system communications
  • Experience defining data-sharing requirements, system outputs, and performance metrics
  • Ability to analyze and optimize architecture performance, reliability, and resiliency
  • Senior systems engineering experience across requirements, solutions, integration, test and evaluation, and lifecycle analysis
  • Experience supporting NSG, ASG, and Federal Agency systems
  • Senior DoD/IC programmatic management experience with systems architecture/engineering focus
  • Skilled in requirements capture, traceability, and translating mission needs into technical solutions
  • Experience allocating requirements across architecture components and executing programs
  • Hands-on systems integration experience
  • Strong communication and documentation skills, including diagrams and interface documentation
  • Willingness to travel to support meetings and imaging system field tests
  • MA/MS with 13+ years of relevant experience, or BA/BS with 15+ years of relevant experience in a related discipline
