Work EnvironmentOffshore, onshore, or remote project sitesDesign, analysis, and project planning primarily office-based or remote
Employer & IndustrySubsea oil & gas, offshore energy companiesOil & gas, offshore engineering firms

Remote Subsea 7 roles typically involve overseeing offshore projects and require field experience, while Remote Subsea Engineer positions focus on design, analysis, and planning tasks that can be performed remotely. Both roles demand relevant certifications and industry knowledge, but their work environments and daily responsibilities differ significantly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Subsea Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Subsea Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering (often mechanical, electrical, or marine), experience with subsea operations, and relevant industry certifications such as IMCA or OPITO. Familiarity with remote operated vehicle (ROV) systems, subsea control systems, and specialized software for underwater operations is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and the ability to work under pressure set outstanding candidates apart. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring the safety, reliability, and efficiency of complex subsea projects in challenging offshore environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Remote Subsea Engineers when working with offshore teams?

Remote Subsea Engineers often collaborate with offshore teams in different time zones, which can pose communication and coordination challenges. Real-time problem-solving may require flexible hours and a proactive approach to maintain seamless project progress. Additionally, understanding the constraints and safety protocols of subsea operations is crucial, as remote engineers must provide accurate technical guidance without being physically present on-site. Building strong relationships with on-site personnel and leveraging digital collaboration tools are key to overcoming these challenges.

What are Remote Subsea 7 jobs?

Remote Subsea 7 jobs refer to positions within Subsea 7, a global leader in offshore engineering and construction, that can be performed remotely or involve remote operations technology. These roles typically support subsea engineering projects, such as designing, installing, and maintaining underwater infrastructure for the oil and gas industry. Remote jobs may include project management, engineering design, remote operations control, IT support, and other functions that do not require being physically present offshore. With advances in technology, many tasks that once required on-site presence can now be handled from remote operations centers or even from home offices. This flexibility helps improve safety, work-life balance, and access to specialized talent.

You'll support a multidisciplinary project team developing advanced maritime technologies.

Leidos’ Maritime Systems Division is a recognized leader in C4ISR technologies, delivering innovative, mission-critical solutions across sensor networks, unmanned systems, and tactical platforms. We’re known for achieving “industry firsts” in the most challenging maritime domains.

What You’ll Do

  • Own technical performance and delivery of subsea systems, ensuring alignment with program requirements and milestones.
  • Serve as the primary authority for subsea architecture, interfaces, and system integration.
  • Lead design reviews, trade studies, risk development and mitigation, and technical decision-making processes for the subsea systems.
  • Oversee multiple subcontractors supporting the subsea components of the program, ensuing interoperability between systems.
  • Support the planning and executing of subsea portions of offshore testing campaigns, including deployment, recovery, and in-water operations.
  • Integrate across the program with other leads, the Program Manager, and customer to ensure program success across all systems.
  • Lead and mentor junior employees, empowering them through assigning tasks, setting priorities, and ensuring accountability in a productive and high-performance environment.
  • Travel when needed (approximately 0-25% time) to support customer needs and attend team meetings.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or similar technical discipline.
  • 8+ years’ total experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with ROVs, subsea tooling, undersea communications, and/or sensor integration.
  • Strong technical focus, ability to support team leadership, and establish strong, collaborative working relationships with government customers, technical staff, senior managers, and peers.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, along with excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Contribute to the successful capture of competitive US DoD contracts.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, along with excellent written and oral communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the US Navy programs, contracts, and mission requirements.
  • Experience with offshore or at-sea test operations.

Proven ability to lead technical teams and manage complex engineering efforts.
