Remote Structural Packaging Design information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Structural Packaging Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Structural Packaging Designer, you need expertise in packaging engineering, material science, and design principles, typically supported by a degree in packaging design or a related field. Proficiency with CAD software (such as ArtiosCAD or SolidWorks), 3D modeling tools, and familiarity with prototyping and manufacturing processes are crucial. Strong communication, creativity, and problem-solving skills help in collaborating remotely with teams and translating client needs into innovative packaging solutions. These skills ensure that designs are functional, cost-effective, visually appealing, and manufacturable within remote, multidisciplinary environments.

What are some common challenges faced by remote structural packaging designers, and how can they be addressed?

One common challenge for remote structural packaging designers is collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams, such as marketing, manufacturing, and logistics, without in-person meetings. Clear communication, regular video conferences, and sharing detailed 3D models or prototypes digitally help bridge this gap. Additionally, remote designers may face difficulties in accessing physical samples or testing materials, which can be mitigated by partnering closely with local suppliers and using virtual prototyping tools. Adapting to these workflows not only increases efficiency but also fosters stronger relationships with team members across different locations.

What is remote structural packaging design?

Remote structural packaging design involves creating the physical structure and form of packaging solutions, such as boxes, containers, or display units, while working from a location outside the traditional office or studio. Designers use digital tools and collaborate virtually with clients and teams to develop packaging that protects products, enhances branding, and meets logistical requirements. This role requires knowledge of materials, manufacturing processes, and sustainability considerations. Remote work in this field allows for flexibility but also demands strong communication and project management skills.

Remote Structural Packaging Design focuses on creating the physical design and structural integrity of packaging using CAD tools, primarily for aesthetic and functional purposes. Remote Packaging Engineers have a broader engineering role, including testing, structural analysis, and compliance. Both roles often work remotely and require similar technical skills, but Packaging Engineers typically have a more technical and analytical focus.

Company Description

We are Olsson. We engineer and design solutions that improve the world around us. As a company, we promise to always be responsive, transparent, and focused on results – for our people, our clients, and our company.

We're a people-centric firm, so it's no surprise our greatest asset is our people. The impact this creates is an environment that encourages our people to grow and be creative with their talents. This approach builds a culture that is uniquely Olsson. It allows us to grow our people as we grow our business. This, in turn, creates a lasting impact on the world around us.

Job Description

Olsson is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Project Structural Engineer to join our Federal Engineering and Design Team, where your expertise will directly support the development of mission-critical infrastructure across the country. From military installations and VA hospitals to federal campuses and secure facilities, you'll help shape the structural backbone of projects that serve national interests and improve lives.

This is more than a design role — it's an opportunity to lead, collaborate, and innovate within a team that values technical excellence, client service, and community impact.

As a Project Structural Engineer, you'll take ownership of structural design and coordination across a range of federal projects. Your day-to-day will include:

  • Lead structural engineering efforts for vertical infrastructure projects including barracks, hospitals, administrative buildings, and specialized federal facilities.
  • Perform detailed structural analysis and design of steel, concrete, masonry, and wood systems. Develop construction documents including plans, specifications, and calculations.
  • Work closely with architects, civil engineers, mechanical/electrical teams, and federal stakeholders to ensure seamless integration of structural systems.
  • Apply design standards including UFC (Unified Facilities Criteria), IBC (International Building Code), ASCE, AISC, and other federal and industry codes.
  • Support proposal writing, scope development, and participate in federal RFP responses to help grow Olsson's federal portfolio.
  • Provide technical guidance to junior engineers, review work for quality and accuracy, and foster a collaborative learning environment.

Why Olsson?

  • Contribute to projects that serve national interests and make a difference in communities.
  • Choose from remote, hybrid, or in-office arrangements that support your lifestyle and productivity.
  • Join a team that values mentorship, innovation, and shared success. We celebrate wins together and learn from challenges.
  • Advance your career through leadership roles, technical training, and exposure to high-profile federal clients.
Qualifications

You are passionate about:

  • Working collaboratively with others.
  • Having ownership in the work you do.
  • Using your talents to positively affect communities.

We're looking for candidates who bring both technical expertise and leadership potential.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil or Architectural Engineering with a structural emphasis.
  • PE or SE license (required).
  • 6+ years of experience in structural design, ideally with federal clients or projects.
  • Proficiency in Autodesk, Revit, and similar analysis tools.
  • Familiarity with DoD, VA, and federal design standards and processes.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to lead meetings, coordinate teams, and engage with clients.
  • Experience managing project schedules, budgets, and deliverables is a plus.
