Is AI replacing civil engineers?

AI is transforming aspects of civil engineering by automating tasks like data analysis, design optimization, and project management. However, the role of a structural engineer remains essential for overseeing projects, applying engineering judgment, and ensuring safety, as AI tools are used to support rather than replace human expertise. Civil engineers need to adapt by developing skills in digital tools and data analysis to stay relevant in an evolving industry.

Remote Structural Design Engineer (Nuclear & Heavy Industrial Projects)
Build What Powers the Future
Join a highly respected engineering firm with over a century of excellence (established in 1905) as we take on major new nuclear and power generation projects across North America. You'll play a key part in delivering brand-new, large-scale infrastructure projects with long-term impact through 2033 and beyond.
If you're a Structural Engineer who thrives on complex engineering challenges, dynamic analysis, and heavy industrial design, this is your opportunity to step into high-visibility work with significant growth potential.
What You'll Do
  • Design heavy foundations and structural steel systems for power generation and industrial facilities
  • Perform structural calculations, modeling, and design studies (including dynamic and seismic analysis)
  • Support nuclear power plant structural and civil design, including small structures and tank foundations
  • Design and analyze pipe racks, ductwork systems, and large rotating equipment supports
  • Develop engineering deliverables: reports, specifications, and construction drawings
  • Review codes, specifications, and design documents to ensure compliance and quality
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams on large-scale infrastructure and energy projects
What You Bring
Required:
  • 8+ years of Structural Engineering experience
  • Hands-on experience with nuclear or heavy industrial projects
  • Strong experience in structural analysis, calculations, and design
  • Experience working on power plants or large industrial facilities
Technical Skills:
  • STAAD.Pro (or similar analysis tools)
  • Experience with dynamic analysis and deep foundations
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD or other design software
Preferred:
  • B.S. in Civil Engineering (Structural focus)
  • PE license (or ability to obtain)
  • Experience with seismic design and nuclear codes
Why You'll Love This Role
High-Impact Projects: Work on major nuclear and power generation initiatives across the Midwest and Canada
Career Growth: Join a company where engineers build long-term careers (many 20-40+ years!)
Strong Team Environment: Collaborate with a mix of experienced leaders and rising engineers
Stability + Innovation: Backed by 100+ years of success with a pipeline of new work
Flexibility: Hybrid or fully remote work options
Expansion Opportunity: Be part of a growing team supporting major project wins
Project Exposure
You'll contribute to exciting, technically challenging projects such as:
  • Conventional Power Generation (simple cycle plants, large rotating equipment)
  • Emission Control Systems (ductwork, industrial upgrades)
  • Heavy Industrial Infrastructure (deep foundations, structural steel design)
The Opportunity
With a strong backlog of secured projects and a growing client base, we need engineers ready to step in now and make an immediate impact. This role offers long-term stability, visibility, and growth into engineering leadership or technical specialization.
