What is remote storage tank welding?

Remote storage tank welding is a specialized process where welders use remote-controlled or automated equipment to weld storage tanks, often in hazardous or hard-to-reach environments. This method enhances safety by reducing the need for direct human presence inside confined spaces or areas with dangerous substances. Remote welding can involve robotic arms, cameras, and other technology to perform precise welding tasks, ensuring the structural integrity of large tanks used for storing liquids or gases. This approach is commonly used in the oil, gas, and chemical industries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote storage tank welder?

To thrive as a Remote Storage Tank Welder, you need expertise in welding techniques (such as MIG, TIG, and stick welding), blueprint reading, and safety protocols, typically backed by a welding certification and relevant experience. Familiarity with welding equipment, non-destructive testing tools, and safety management systems is essential. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to work independently in isolated or challenging environments are critical soft skills. These competencies ensure weld quality, structural safety, and adherence to industry standards, which are vital for the integrity and longevity of storage tanks.

What are some common challenges faced by remote storage tank welders, and how can they be addressed?

Remote storage tank welders often encounter challenges such as working in isolated locations with limited access to immediate support or resources. Adapting to varying weather conditions, maintaining consistent weld quality, and ensuring strict adherence to safety protocols are essential. To address these challenges, welders should be well-versed in remote communication tools, participate in regular safety and technical training, and develop strong problem-solving skills to handle unexpected issues independently. Working closely with remote teams and leveraging digital project management platforms can also facilitate smoother collaboration and project tracking.

What is the difference between Remote Storage Tank Welding vs Storage Tank Welding?

This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who communicates clearly, develops team members, protects equipment, and consistently meets client and project expectations.

The Lead works closely with the Field Supervisor to coordinate people and equipment, execute the job plan, maintain accurate field data, and keep operations aligned with company safety standards, client specifications, and project timelines.

Key Responsibilities

Crew Leadership & Safety

  • Lead, mentor, and supervise water transfer technicians and operators; assign daily tasks, communicate expectations, and provide coaching and performance feedback.
  • Promote an accountable, safety-focused, and team-oriented work environment in every phase of the job.
  • Conduct pre-job planning, safety meetings, equipment inspections, and hazard reviews; enforce company policies, client requirements, environmental regulations, and safe-work procedures.
  • Assist with site-specific emergency response plans and ensure hazards, incidents, operational changes, and corrective actions are communicated and documented promptly.

Field Operations & Equipment

  • Coordinate the rig-up, operation, monitoring, and rig-down of pumps, layflat pipeline, manifolds, storage tanks, meters, and related water transfer equipment.
  • Operate pumps and safely transfer water between storage and jobsite systems while monitoring flow rates, pressures, tank levels, and transferred volumes.
  • Respond quickly to changing field conditions, alarms, leaks, equipment issues, or client needs to protect people, equipment, the environment, and job continuity.
  • Coordinate with the Field Supervisor to schedule personnel and allocate pumps, pipelines, tanks, and other resources to meet project requirements.
  • Inspect, maintain, and troubleshoot company-owned and rented equipment; complete preventive maintenance and required maintenance records to minimize downtime.
  • Track equipment usage, storage volumes, transferred quantities, and material inventory accurately.

Client Communication, Automation & Reporting

  • Maintain professional, consistent communication with clients, project managers, and supervisors.
  • Address client questions and concerns promptly, escalate issues when appropriate, and communicate job status, risks, and resource needs clearly.
  • Verify that H2Optics meters, sensors, and connectivity are functioning properly and that live field data is recorded and available to the client and Water Way Solutions operations leadership.
  • Prepare and submit accurate daily and project reports covering progress, water volumes, equipment usage, maintenance, downtime, and safety events.

Required Qualifications

  • At least two years of water transfer leadership experience.
  • Hands-on experience with pump setup and operation, pipeline installation, tank monitoring, flow measurement, and basic equipment troubleshooting.
  • Valid driver’s license and a clean motor vehicle record for the preceding three years.
  • Proficient in safely operating skid steers, telehandlers, and deployers.
  • Reliable transportation to and from company facilities or designated mobilization points.
  • Ability to successfully complete required pre-employment screening, including a drug screen and background check.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Ability to travel, including by air, and work at remote project locations for the full four-week rotation; operational needs may occasionally require a longer stay.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding field work outdoors in varying weather and terrain, while safely handling hoses, piping, tools, and related equipment.
  • Dependable, punctual, focused, team-oriented, and able to communicate effectively with crew members, supervisors, and clients.

Preferred Qualification

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

What We Offer

  • Starting pay of $24.00–$26.00 per hour.
  • Overtime opportunities.
  • Four weeks on / two weeks off rotational schedule.
  • A full-time, hands-on leadership role with a team that values safety, accountability, quality service, and technology-supported field operations.
