What is remote storage tank welding?

Remote storage tank welding is a specialized process where welders use remote-controlled or automated equipment to weld storage tanks, often in hazardous or hard-to-reach environments. This method enhances safety by reducing the need for direct human presence inside confined spaces or areas with dangerous substances. Remote welding can involve robotic arms, cameras, and other technology to perform precise welding tasks, ensuring the structural integrity of large tanks used for storing liquids or gases. This approach is commonly used in the oil, gas, and chemical industries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote storage tank welder?

To thrive as a Remote Storage Tank Welder, you need expertise in welding techniques (such as MIG, TIG, and stick welding), blueprint reading, and safety protocols, typically backed by a welding certification and relevant experience. Familiarity with welding equipment, non-destructive testing tools, and safety management systems is essential. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to work independently in isolated or challenging environments are critical soft skills. These competencies ensure weld quality, structural safety, and adherence to industry standards, which are vital for the integrity and longevity of storage tanks.

What are some common challenges faced by remote storage tank welders, and how can they be addressed?

Remote storage tank welders often encounter challenges such as working in isolated locations with limited access to immediate support or resources. Adapting to varying weather conditions, maintaining consistent weld quality, and ensuring strict adherence to safety protocols are essential. To address these challenges, welders should be well-versed in remote communication tools, participate in regular safety and technical training, and develop strong problem-solving skills to handle unexpected issues independently. Working closely with remote teams and leveraging digital project management platforms can also facilitate smoother collaboration and project tracking.

Job description

UST (Underground Storage Tank) Compliance Specialist

UST = Underground Storage Tank compliance (fuel retail/petroleum/environmental) this is NOT a financial, HIPAA, SOX, or legal compliance role

Please do not apply unless you have direct experience with USTs, fuel retail environmental regulations, or petroleum/UST-adjacent industries

Full-Time or Part-Time  |  Exempt or Non-Exempt  |  Remote with in-office opportunities in NC and MA  |
Reports to the Fuel Facilities UST Compliance Manager  |  $25 - $35/hour ($52,000 - $72,800 annual)

THE ROLE

We're looking for someone experienced in managing UST compliance at retail fueling sites to join our existing team. Pinnacle works as an extension of our clients' environmental compliance teams. This can take the form of filling gaps created by staffing turnovers, surge work as the portfolio expands, or a longer-term outsourced solution partner allowing our clients to focus on proactive asset planning. We don't own tanks, we don't do the testing, and we don't do field work. What we do is make sure the compliance program runs, the records hold up, and the gaps get closed before they turn into violations, lost insurance coverage, or lost revenue.

Day to day you'd be working alongside Pinnacle teammates, client staff, contractors, and regulators to keep every UST system in compliance with excellent documentation, supported by Pinnacle's wholistic service model that unites the right People, efficient Process, and powerful compliance Platforms.

WHAT YOU'D BE DOING

  • Inspections and return to compliance: Coordinating agency inspections, putting the compliance packet together, and driving notices of violation through to a documented return to compliance.
  • Release detection: Reviewing monthly CSLD, SIR and interstitial monitoring results, chasing down whatever doesn't pass, and making sure suspected release reporting happens inside the state's window.
  • Testing and equipment: Scheduling and verifying annual and triennial line and tank tightness testing, ATG certification, Stage I/II vapor recovery, cathodic protection rectifier readings, and 30-day monthly visual walkthrough inspections.
  • Vendors and activities: Triaging alarms, dispatching the right contractor, and following through until the closeout documentation is in the system.
  • Registrations and permitting: Tank registration, permitting, air permit renewals, and financial assurance and state insurance fund applications for new-to-industry, raze and rebuilds, tank replacements and removals, tank closures and ownership transfers.
  • Agency reporting: Coordinating agency reporting and tracking remediation response and component repairs through completion.

WHAT YOU'D BRING

  • Two or more years in UST or AST compliance, with an owner or operator, an environmental consultancy, or a state program.
  • A working command of 40 CFR Part 280 and at least one state UST program.
  • Class A or Class B operator training, or the readiness to complete it.
  • Comfort working directly with owners, operators and regulators.
  • Solid Excel skills and fluency with a compliance platform.
  • Availability for the shared on-call rotation.

Useful but not required: a multi-site portfolio in more than one state, existing relationships with state agency staff, or any exposure to state UST cleanup programs.

Apply through pinnacleems.com/careers. We review applications as they come in and we'll tell you where you stand at each step.
