Remote Standardized Test Developer information

What is a remote standardized test developer?

A Remote Standardized Test Developer is a professional who designs, writes, and reviews assessment materials for standardized tests such as SAT, GRE, or state exams, while working remotely. They collaborate with educators, psychometricians, and subject matter experts to create valid, reliable, and fair test items. Their role often includes analyzing test results, ensuring compliance with testing standards, and maintaining the confidentiality and security of test content. Working remotely allows them to perform these duties from any location, using specialized software and communication tools.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote standardized test developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Standardized Test Developer, you need expertise in educational assessment, psychometrics, and subject matter knowledge, usually supported by a relevant degree in education or a specialized field. Familiarity with test development software, item banking systems, and data analysis tools, as well as certifications like the Certified Test Developer (CTD), are commonly required. Strong attention to detail, written communication, and collaboration skills are essential for creating valid, reliable test items and working with distributed teams. These skills ensure that assessments are fair, effective, and aligned with educational standards while meeting the demands of remote work.

What are some common challenges faced by remote standardized test developers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Standardized Test Developers often face challenges related to communication and collaboration, especially when working across different time zones or with multiple stakeholders such as subject matter experts and psychometricians. To address these challenges, it's important to establish clear communication channels, utilize project management and collaboration tools, and set regular check-ins. Staying organized and proactive about deadlines also helps manage the complexity of test item creation, review, and revision. Embracing a structured workflow can improve efficiency and ensure high-quality, valid assessments.

What is the difference between Remote Standardized Test Developer vs Remote Test Item Writer?

AspectRemote Standardized Test DeveloperRemote Test Item Writer

  • Provide oversight of test planning, test readiness, test execution, discrepancy management, data analysis, and final reporting.
  • Ensure traceability between system requirements, verification methods, test procedures, test results, and closure evidence.
  • Coordinate test activities across software, hardware, systems engineering, cybersecurity, logistics, operations, and external stakeholders.
  • Lead test readiness reviews, test working groups, post-test reviews, and discrepancy resolution meetings.
  • Support development of test objectives, entry and exit criteria, success measures, resource requirements, and risk mitigation plans.
  • Oversee execution of integration, system, qualification, acceptance, and operational test events, as applicable.
  • Review test results, deficiency reports, observations, and corrective actions to ensure technical accuracy and completeness.
  • Support test environment planning, configuration management, instrumentation, data collection, and resource coordination.
  • Track test progress, issues, risks, schedules, and team assignments and report status to program and customer leadership.
  • Support customer demonstrations, government witnessing, formal verification events, and milestone reviews.
  • Mentor test engineers and promote disciplined test processes, quality standards, and technical rigor across the team.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of test methodologies, documentation practices, and test management processes.

THIS HYBRID POSITION REQUIRES 3 DAYS OF WORK IN THE OFFICE AND 2 DAYS REMOTE PER WEEK
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Top Secret Clearance
  • Significant experience in test engineering for complex technical systems or programs.
  • Experience developing test strategies, test plans, procedures, and reports.
  • Experience leading test teams or serving in a senior test coordination role.
  • Experience coordinating with government test organizations, customer representatives, or formal test management authorities.
  • Understanding of verification and validation processes, discrepancy tracking, and structured test execution methodologies.
  • Ability to analyze technical issues, manage test activities, and communicate results effectively.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary engineering, operational, and customer teams.
