How much do remote space plasma physics jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 14, 2026, the average yearly pay for remote space plasma physics in the United States is $46,902.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $43,500.00 and $50,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is remote space plasma physics?

Remote space plasma physics is the study of charged particles, or plasma, in outer space environments such as the solar wind, magnetosphere, and interstellar medium, using remote sensing techniques. Rather than direct sampling, scientists utilize instruments on satellites or ground-based observatories to observe and analyze emissions, waves, and fields that reveal plasma behaviors. This field is crucial for understanding fundamental space phenomena, space weather, and the effects of solar activity on Earth and spacecraft. Researchers in this area contribute to advancements in satellite technology, communication systems, and our overall knowledge of the universe.

What are some common challenges faced by remote space plasma physicists, and how can they be addressed?

Remote space plasma physicists often encounter challenges such as limited access to laboratory facilities, reliance on remote sensing data, and collaborating across multiple time zones with international teams. To address these issues, it's important to develop strong data analysis skills, become proficient with simulation tools, and maintain clear communication with colleagues through regular virtual meetings. Engaging with online scientific communities and participating in remote conferences can also help foster professional connections and support ongoing research.

What is the difference between Remote Space Plasma Physics vs Remote Space Weather Analyst?

AspectRemote Space Plasma PhysicsRemote Space Weather Analyst
Required CredentialsPhysics degree, possibly PhD, specialized in plasma physicsPhysics or atmospheric science degree, often with meteorology or space weather certifications
Work EnvironmentResearch institutions, universities, space agencies, often in labs or remote data analysisGovernment agencies, space agencies, private sector, analyzing space weather data remotely
Industry UsageResearch, academia, space exploration projectsOperational space weather forecasting, satellite protection, communication systems

Remote Space Plasma Physics focuses on understanding plasma phenomena in space environments through research and data analysis, often requiring advanced physics credentials. In contrast, Remote Space Weather Analysts interpret space weather data to predict and mitigate impacts on technology and infrastructure. Both roles involve remote work and specialized knowledge but serve different practical and research purposes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Space Plasma Physicist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Space Plasma Physicist, you need a solid background in physics or space science, usually with a Ph.D. and experience in plasma physics and data analysis. Familiarity with analytical software (e.g., MATLAB, Python), simulation tools, and satellite data systems is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, curiosity, and effective communication are important soft skills for collaborating with international research teams and presenting findings. These competencies are vital for advancing our understanding of space phenomena and successfully contributing to complex, data-driven research projects.

The Pulsed Power team is responsible for developing novel pulsed power technologies for use in space and on-earth. We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Pulsed Power R&D Engineer who can rapidly iterate and develop novel pulsed power systems. The ideal candidate will thrive in a resource-constrained environment, capable of transforming vague inputs into functional prototypes through consistent logical questioning and experimentation. This role demands a proactive individual who is mission-focused, capable of working independently, and able to travel to the field when necessary.

Tasks:

  • Lead and apply cutting-edge pulsed power systems.
  • Rapidly design and iterate innovative prototypes.
  • Ensure safe and efficient lab testing and operations.
  • Oversee design specifications and documentation.
  • Conduct performance, lifetime, and safety testing.
  • Work hands-on in a resource and schedule-constrained environment.
  • Refine prototypes based on experimental results.
  • Perform LTspice modeling tasks.
  • Develop custom diagnostics from scratch.
  • Innovate with a logical, problem-solving approach.
  • Communicate technical concepts clearly to the team and stakeholders.
  • Drive technological improvements and collaborate across teams.
  • Experience in high voltage systems and components
  • Experience in electro-static simulations
  • Strong first-principles engineering fundamentals.
  • Expert understanding of pulsed power systems.
  • Background in plasma physics.
  • Basic domain knowledge including surface mount soldering, EMI protection of circuits, and control of circuits using Arduinos.
  • Basic understanding of solid state power components/circuits (e.g. switched mode power supply topologies, power transformers, capacitors, MOSFET's, thyristors) and integrated circuits.
  • Excellent communicator with the ability to work well in an integrated team including daily interactions with technicians, engineers, managers, and suppliers.
  • Hands-on experience with fabrication and troubleshooting.
  • Excited to work in a startup company culture and atmosphere.
  • This position is located at Lunar Resources' facility in Houston, TX. Remote work is NOT possible for this position.
