What is a remote software job?

Remote software jobs are positions in the technology sector where professionals work from locations outside the traditional office, typically from home or anywhere with internet access. These roles involve designing, developing, testing, or maintaining software applications and can include titles like software developer, engineer, or QA tester. Remote software jobs offer flexibility and often require strong communication skills and self-motivation. Companies use collaborative tools and platforms to manage workflow and team interactions for remote employees.

How do remote software developers typically collaborate effectively with their teams despite not sharing a physical workspace?

Remote software developers rely heavily on digital collaboration tools such as version control systems, video conferencing, and project management platforms to stay connected with their teams. Regularly scheduled stand-up meetings, code reviews, and clear documentation are essential to ensure everyone is aligned and projects progress smoothly. While remote work offers flexibility, it also requires strong communication skills and self-discipline to manage tasks and deadlines independently. Teams often establish clear guidelines and use asynchronous communication to accommodate different time zones, helping maintain productivity and a sense of teamwork.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills, problem-solving abilities, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience in computer science or software development. Job description

About Flipturn
The world is in the middle of the most consequential energy transition in a century. EVs are rapidly replacing combustion vehicles, AI data centers are straining power grids to their limits, battery storage is reshaping how energy is produced and consumed, and the pressure to move off fossil fuels has never been more intense. Flipturn sits at the intersection of all of this.
We're building the software and hardware platform that makes large-scale EV charging work for fleets, autonomous vehicles, multifamily properties, and commercial sites. We're working with some of the biggest names in transportation and collaborating with leading utilities, hardware OEMs, and engineering firms.
We're backed by top VC firms CRV and Accel (recent $11M Series A), built by a team from MIT, Samsara, Stripe, and Google, and growing revenue with many years of runway.
At Flipturn, you'll:
  • Build at the center of the energy transition: your work will directly shape how energy flows between vehicles, distributed energy resources (DERs), and the grid across North America
  • Work on genuinely hard problems: real-time distributed energy management, grid integration, reliable AI agents for operations, payments, and more
  • Join a fast-moving team using the best tools: AI coding and review tooling, rapid CI/deploys, TypeScript/Node/Go, and constant self-improvement, all while maintaining 99.99%+ uptime
  • Own major projects end-to-end and talk directly with customers in the EV and energy industry
Impact in the EV and energy industry
By 2030, EVs will represent more than 60% of vehicles sold globally. Fleets are electrifying, cities are building charging corridors, and the grid is under more pressure than ever from data centers, buildings, and industrial loads. Managing all of this intelligently, in real time, is a massive unsolved problem. Here's a taste of what we've shipped:
  • Flip, our AI charging operations agent. Flip monitors every charger 24/7, analyzes fault patterns, and proactively keeps operators posted about issues and recommended actions. Our customers now see it as their daily "go-to" to keep on top of their operations.
  • Dynamic energy management and the Flipturn Controller. Customers save 30-60% on their energy bill through our system that manages energy output across 100+ chargers in real time. The Flipturn Controller is our on-site hardware device that connects to batteries, generators, and energy meters locally to manage the most advanced sites.
  • Autonomous vehicle fleets. We power charging infrastructure for the leading AV fleets. Our systems facilitating critical reliability and real-time energy management on these high-utilization depots, and as this area grows quickly we are the platform of choice.
The role
You'll build major features end-to-end, talk directly to customers, and help define the direction of our platform as we scale. As a software engineer at Flipturn, you'll work on projects like:
  • Next-generation AI agents for physical infrastructure: Flip AI has already helped operators cut the time spent analyzing logs and data. Our customers have shared a clear demand for next-generation tooling to automate their repetitive workflows and issue investigation.
  • Integrating with utilities and microgrids: Getting electrical capacity is the biggest blocker for EV charging sites and other large energy projects. Building on our work with the Flipturn Controller, we're developing advanced on-site energy management, a unique opportunity to build software for the physical world.
  • Expanding to the next level of scale: As Flipturn is becoming the EV charging platform of choice, we'll need to scale our product and systems to grow our customer base and enter new markets.

We're looking for people who have:
  • 3+ years of experience building software products
  • Experience leading significant projects from inception to post-launch
  • Strong technical background in full-stack software development and system design
  • Experience working directly with users to get feedback and iterate on a product
  • Excitement about being part of a fast-paced, dynamic early-stage startup
  • Initiative to constantly improve development velocity, with AI tooling and otherwise
Benefits
  • Healthcare. Top tier health, dental, and vision insurance. 100% of employee premiums and 50% of dependent premiums covered.
  • Equity. All offers include equity packages vesting over four years with a one-year cliff.
  • NYC office in the financial district area with daily lunch. Generous equipment and home office budget for remote teammates.
  • Quarterly team bonding weeks with the full team.
  • Unlimited PTO with a culture of actually taking vacation.
  • Personal EV rental stipend to experience the product firsthand.
  • 401(k) program.
