A Remote Software Engineering Manager is a leadership professional who oversees software development teams that work from various locations, rather than in a traditional office setting. Their responsibilities include managing team performance, guiding technical direction, coordinating projects, and ensuring effective communication among remote team members. They also play a key role in hiring, mentoring, and supporting engineers to achieve both individual and organizational goals. This role requires strong technical expertise, excellent communication skills, and the ability to manage projects and people in a distributed work environment.

What does a remote software engineering manager do?

As a remote software engineering manager, you work from home to manage a team that develops or enhances computer software programs. In this remote role, you direct a team of employees to design computer programs, develop solutions to engineering challenges, and enhance the capabilities of existing software and systems. Your responsibilities span project management duties, team building and recruitment activities, and collaboration with information technology teams and other departments. You also consult with company executives to determine software requirements and limitations and provide updates on projects. You must understand company standards and follow organizational guidelines to achieve specific goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote software engineering manager?

To thrive as a Remote Software Engineering Manager, you need strong leadership abilities, deep technical expertise in software development, and a track record of managing engineering teams, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira or Asana), version control systems (such as Git), and collaboration platforms (like Slack or Zoom) is crucial, along with Agile or Scrum certifications. Exceptional communication, emotional intelligence, and the ability to motivate and mentor remote teams are standout soft skills in this role. These combined skills enable effective project delivery, foster team cohesion across distances, and ensure continuous team growth and innovation.

How does a remote software engineering manager effectively foster team collaboration and communication across different time zones?

Job description

Diversified Services Network, Inc. (DSN) is seeking a full-time Sr. Application Security Engineer to join our team in Chicago, IL. We offer remote work, with occasional onsite work, based in Chicago, IL, full benefits, PTO, 401k, and more! If you're looking to grow your career within an extremely reputable, stable Fortune 100 company — let's talk!

Key Responsibilities

•       Define, implement, and continuously improve application security processes, standards, and workflows embedded throughout the software development lifecycle (SDLC).

•       Perform AI-assisted and traditional security assessments of applications, APIs, cloud workloads, repositories, and supporting infrastructure.

•       Manage security scanning coverage — source code analysis, secret scanning, dependency analysis, and infrastructure reviews — and triage findings by exploitability, business impact, and severity.

•       Drive remediation from discovery through verified closure, including backlog management, ownership assignment, retesting, and evidence collection.

•       Identify and reduce security debt, dependency vulnerabilities, outdated libraries, and software supply chain risk across the application portfolio.

•       Build security metrics, coverage reporting, and executive dashboards that give leadership visibility into remediation status and posture trends.

•       Leverage AI tools responsibly to accelerate security analysis, threat modeling, code review, and documentation within appropriate governance controls.

•       Perform manual validation and security testing using tools such as Burp Suite, browser developer tools, API testing platforms, and secure code review methodologies.

•       Apply OWASP Top 10, API Security Top 10, and secure coding principles across authentication, authorization, and diverse technology stacks.

•       Support remediation by developing code fixes, configuration changes, and compensating controls while minimizing production risk and business impact.

•       Partner daily with architects, developers, DevOps engineers, product owners, and business stakeholders to communicate risk, negotiate priorities, and remove blockers.

•       Maintain Agile work items (stories, tasks, defects) and participate in Scrum ceremonies — stand-ups, backlog refinement, sprint planning, and review.

•       Stay current on emerging threats, AI-related security risks, and industry best practices; coach and mentor application teams to build a security-first culture.

Requirements

Education & Experience:

•       Bachelor's and/or Master's degree in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Information Systems, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience) and 5–7 years of hands-on application security / DevSecOps experience.

Technical Skills:

•       Strong working understanding of Secure SDLC, DevSecOps, Agile, and Scrum methodologies.

•       Experience with security tooling: Burp Suite, GitHub Advanced Security, CodeQL, SAST, SCA, secret scanning, dependency analysis, and CI/CD security tooling.

•       Ability to read, analyze, test, and modify production application code in Java and Python to validate security findings and support remediation.

•       Knowledge of OWASP Top 10, API Security Top 10, authentication/authorization controls, and secure coding principles.

•       Familiarity with cloud security, identity and access management, and modern application architectures.

•       Experience using AI-assisted development and security tools safely and effectively.

•       Skilled in vulnerability triage and validation (exploitability, business impact, severity, compensating controls) and in building security metrics and dashboards.

Soft Skills:

•       Excellent communication, stakeholder management, presentation, and documentation skills.

•       Ability to work independently across multiple applications, teams, portfolios, and technology stacks.

•       Strong problem-solving mindset that balances security, usability, and business objectives.

•       Collaborative and influential — able to negotiate priorities and remove blockers across teams.

•       Comfortable coaching others and championing a security-first culture.
