What is a remote software developer?

A Remote Software Developer is a professional who designs, builds, and maintains software applications while working from a location outside of a traditional office, often from home or another remote setting. These developers collaborate with team members using online communication and project management tools. Remote work allows for greater flexibility and access to global job opportunities, but it also requires strong self-motivation and communication skills. Companies hire remote software developers to tap into a wider talent pool and to offer flexible work arrangements.

What does a remote software developer do?

Remote software developers design and create computer software programs and systems for their employer or client. Unlike in-house software developers, remote software developers work from home or another location outside of the office. As a remote software developer, you discuss the kind of program you need to create, making sure to clarify with your department or with your client what they need in their application. You may develop an entirely new program or improve an existing one. Remote developers are responsible for a program’s overall framework, and they design precise workflow charts that explain to programmers what code is needed for different aspects of the program. Remote software developers also design tests and protocols for the QA department to follow when they are testing the application.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote software developer?

To thrive as a Remote Software Developer, you need strong programming skills, problem-solving ability, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience in computer science or software engineering. Familiarity with common development tools (such as Git, Visual Studio Code, and CI/CD platforms) and frameworks, as well as knowledge of cloud services, are typically required. Excellent communication, self-motivation, and time management skills help you collaborate effectively and stay productive in a remote setting. These skills and qualities are essential for delivering high-quality software, meeting deadlines, and contributing to distributed teams.

How do remote software developers stay connected and collaborate effectively with their teams?

Remote software developers typically use a variety of collaboration tools, such as Slack, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom, to communicate with colleagues and participate in daily stand-ups or sprint planning meetings. Version control systems like GitHub or GitLab are essential for code collaboration and review. Regular check-ins, clear documentation, and agile workflows help ensure everyone stays aligned and productive despite working from different locations. Proactive communication and time management are crucial for overcoming the challenges of remote work and successfully contributing to team goals.

Full Stack Developer

Dental Care Alliance

Sarasota, FL • On-site, Remote

Full-time

Posted 5 days ago

Job description

Overview

The Full Stack Developer advances Dental Care Alliance's AI and internal application strategy by transforming proof-of-concept solutions into secure, scalable, and production-ready systems. Partnering closely with the Senior Data Architect and IT stakeholders, this role designs, develops, and maintains AI-enabled tools, APIs, integrations, and internal interfaces-ensuring alignment with enterprise architecture, technology standards, and governance requirements throughout the development lifecycle. The position also supports production stability and drives knowledge transfer to sustain long-term maintainability.

Responsibilities

Take ownership of internal tools and applications built with AI assistance-such as Python-based agents, SharePoint-based solutions, internal web applications, APIs, and system integrations-serving as the second set of eyes needed to harden them and prepare them for production.

Guide and support the build, deployment, maintenance, and troubleshooting of web applications, static websites, full-stack solutions, REST APIs, middleware, and integrations connecting AI tools to enterprise data sources, Microsoft 365, SharePoint Online, Power Platform, and other internal systems.

Design and build internal-facing front-end interfaces from the ground up based on business requirements, ensuring tools are clean, usable, and aligned to workflow needs-without requiring extensive branding or customer-facing design polish-and maintain them as business needs evolve.

Partner with SQL Server, data engineering, and analytics teams to design appropriate data access patterns, write and optimize queries, and integrate applications with relational databases, NoSQL databases, and APIs-leveraging existing database expertise for schema design and ETL work.

Participate in the AI request intake, prioritization, and governance process-helping translate business needs into technically feasible, secure, scalable, and supportable solutions.

Maintain source control, branching discipline, CI/CD pipelines, deployment procedures, environment management, release documentation, and application patching and upgrade cycles.

Administer applications throughout the production lifecycle, including monitoring, troubleshooting, dependency management, version upgrades, issue resolution, and ongoing maintenance.

Evaluate, test, and support AI-assisted development workflows and tools as appropriate, improving coding, documentation, troubleshooting, and application support practices.

Document solution architecture, code logic, configuration details, support procedures, known dependencies, and operational handoffs to ensure applications can be supported by more than one team member.

Cross-train IT teammates and business stakeholders on supported tools, operational procedures, escalation paths, and production support expectations.

Collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders to gather requirements, clarify scope, manage turnaround expectations, and support fast-paced delivery in an emerging technology environment.

Follow established IT security, compliance, access management, change control, and data governance standards when moving solutions from proof-of-concept to production.

Perform other duties as assigned to support IT application development, automation, AI enablement, and enterprise technology initiatives.

Work Environment:

This role operates primarily in a professional office, hybrid, or remote technology environment and requires regular use of a computer, collaboration platforms, development tools, Microsoft 365 applications, database and analytics platforms, and application support systems. The position requires frequent collaboration with IT, data, analytics, business, and operational stakeholders and may involve shifting priorities, production support needs, and time-sensitive project deadlines.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers to operate a computer and related equipment, communicate verbally and in writing, and view information on a computer screen for extended periods. The employee may occasionally stand, walk, reach, bend, or lift and/or move items of light weight consistent with an office environment. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the role.

Competencies:

Technical Execution: Demonstrates strong hands-on development capability across back-end services, APIs, data integrations, front-end fundamentals, and production application support.

AI Enablement and Governance: Applies disciplined engineering, documentation, security, and governance practices to AI-enabled tools and emerging technology solutions.

Problem Solving: Analyzes complex code, integrations, application behavior, and stakeholder requirements to identify practical, scalable, and maintainable solutions.

Documentation and Knowledge Sharing: Produces clear technical documentation, support procedures, and cross-training materials to reduce operational risk and single-person dependency.

Collaboration: Works effectively with data, IT, business, and non-technical stakeholders to clarify needs, manage expectations, and deliver supportable solutions.

Production Support Mindset: Maintains ownership of applications beyond initial build, including troubleshooting, upgrades, patching, release management, and long-term maintainability.

Adaptability: Operates effectively in a fast-paced technology environment where priorities, requirements, and emerging AI capabilities may evolve quickly.

Security and Compliance Orientation: Incorporates access controls, data governance, change management, and secure development practices into production application delivery.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, Data Systems, or a related field preferred; equivalent education, certifications, training, and relevant experience may be considered.

Three to five years of full stack development experience supporting enterprise applications, internal tools, integrations, automation, or production systems.

Strong production-level Python experience, including AI/ML-adjacent libraries, automation, agents, or AI-enabled application development.

Experience designing, developing, integrating, and supporting REST APIs, back-end services, middleware, SQL/relational database integrations, and system-to-system connections.

Experience with version control, CI/CD pipelines, release management, and application lifecycle support using GitHub, Azure DevOps, or similar tools.

Working knowledge of Microsoft 365 ecosystem tools, including SharePoint Online and Power Platform; experience with Power Apps, Power BI/Fabric, or related Microsoft technologies preferred.

Front-end development fundamentals required, including HTML and JavaScript; experience with React, Angular, TypeScript, CSS, Node.js, or similar technologies preferred.

Experience supporting applications through production operations, including troubleshooting, upgrades, dependency management, documentation, and ongoing maintenance.

Strong business requirements gathering, stakeholder communication, cross-functional collaboration, and ability to work effectively in fast-paced technical and non-technical environments.
