Remote Software Defined Radio Engineer information

Can a software engineer work remotely?

Yes, many software engineers, including those working on software defined radio projects, can work remotely. Remote work is common in software development, especially when the role involves programming, system design, and collaboration tools like version control and communication platforms. However, roles requiring specialized hardware access or on-site testing may have some in-person requirements.

What does a Remote Software Defined Radio Engineer do?

A Remote Software Defined Radio (SDR) Engineer designs, develops, and maintains radio communication systems that are implemented through software rather than traditional hardware circuits. Working remotely, they use programming languages and signal processing techniques to create flexible and efficient radio solutions for applications such as telecommunications, defense, and research. Their responsibilities include developing algorithms, optimizing radio performance, troubleshooting signal issues, and collaborating with cross-functional teams, all while leveraging remote communication and development tools.

What is the difference between Remote Software Defined Radio Engineer vs RF Engineer?

AspectRemote Software Defined Radio EngineerRF Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's/Master's in Electrical Engineering, Communications, or related fields; experience with SDR platformsBachelor's/Master's in Electrical Engineering, RF Engineering, or related fields; certifications like FCC or RF-specific training
Work EnvironmentRemote or on-site, focused on software development and signal processingPrimarily on-site or lab-based, focused on hardware, testing, and RF system design
Industry UsageTelecommunications, defense, aerospace, software companiesWireless communications, broadcasting, defense, telecommunications

The Remote Software Defined Radio Engineer specializes in developing and implementing SDR systems through software, often working remotely. In contrast, the RF Engineer focuses on hardware design, testing, and deployment of RF systems. Both roles require technical expertise but differ mainly in their focus on software versus hardware components.

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

A Remote Software Defined Radio Engineer can potentially earn $500,000 annually with extensive experience, specialized skills in RF engineering, and advanced certifications. Such high salaries are typically found in senior or executive roles within the telecommunications or defense industries, often involving leadership, complex system design, or business development responsibilities.

How to be an RF engineer?

To become an RF engineer, typically a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, radio frequency engineering, or a related field is required. Gaining experience with RF design, testing, and simulation tools, along with certifications such as FCC licensing or professional engineering licensure, can enhance job prospects. Strong knowledge of signal processing, antennas, and communication protocols is essential for success in this role.

What can I do with a software-defined radio?

A Remote Software Defined Radio Engineer can use software-defined radios (SDRs) to receive, transmit, and analyze radio signals across various frequencies. SDRs enable tasks such as signal monitoring, spectrum analysis, digital communications, and developing custom radio applications, often requiring programming skills and knowledge of radio protocols.

What are some typical challenges faced by Remote Software Defined Radio Engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Software Defined Radio (SDR) Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing complex signal processing tasks, ensuring reliable communication across distributed teams, and staying updated with evolving SDR technologies. Working remotely may also require effective collaboration using digital tools and clear documentation to align with colleagues on system design and troubleshooting. To overcome these challenges, SDR Engineers benefit from proactive communication, regular code reviews, and ongoing professional development through webinars and technical forums.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Software Defined Radio Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Software Defined Radio Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering, digital signal processing, and RF communications, typically supported by a relevant degree. Proficiency with SDR platforms (such as GNU Radio, USRP, or MATLAB), wireless protocols, and programming languages like Python or C++ is essential. Strong problem-solving, independent work ethic, and effective remote communication skills help set candidates apart. These abilities are crucial for designing, implementing, and troubleshooting complex radio systems in distributed and collaborative environments.

Job description

Position Summary

We are seeking a Mid-Level Software Engineer to contribute to the development of the Multimode Threat Engagement Simulation Platform under the technical direction of the Lead and Senior Staff Engineers. You will build features across the stack - backend physics API endpoints in Julia, React/TypeScript UI components, and Cesium map view integrations - while growing your expertise in high-performance scientific computing and defense mission engineering applications.

This role is an opportunity to develop real depth in an intersection of disciplines that is rarely available at early career: scientific computing with Julia, 3D geospatial visualization with CesiumJS, and the physics of aerospace and defense sensor systems. You do not need to arrive with domain knowledge - you will acquire it through hands-on work alongside domain experts and through structured mentorship from the Lead Engineer. What you do need is a solid programming foundation, genuine curiosity about computational physics, and the ability to write clear, tested, maintainable code.

***Contingent upon contract award***

Responsibilities

Backend Development

  • Implement and test Julia HTTP API endpoints for mission data CRUD operations, trajectory query routing, and physics result serialization
  • Write Julia utility functions for data format conversion: GeoJSON, CZML, mission JSON schema parsing and generation
  • Assist with Monte Carlo driver implementation: input parameter perturbation, result aggregation, and statistical output computation (CEP, R95, Pk distribution)
  • Write unit and integration tests for computation backend endpoints; validate API response schemas against the frontend contract
  • Maintain and extend the mission data serialization layer: add new asset types, task attributes, and output fields while preserving backward compatibility with existing save files

Frontend Development

  • Build and maintain React/TypeScript components for the mission planning UI: forms for asset creation and editing, task assignment dialogs, mission parameter panels, and tabbed navigation
  • Implement Cesium/Resium map features: add new asset marker types, update entity styling based on mission state, and wire up click/hover interactions between the globe and the mission data panel
  • Consume Julia backend API endpoints from the React frontend: implement fetch calls, loading states, error handling, and result rendering for trajectory and analysis queries
  • Write TypeScript type definitions for all mission data structures shared between the frontend and the Julia API

Testing and DevOps Support

  • Write automated tests at the component level (React Testing Library or equivalent) and integration level (API contract tests)
  • Assist with CI/CD pipeline maintenance: diagnose build failures on Windows and Linux targets, update dependency versions, and validate packaged installer behavior
  • Participate in code review: give and receive feedback on correctness, performance, and readability
  • Maintain technical documentation: update API reference docs, build guides, and developer setup instructions as features evolve

***Contingent upon contract award***

Additional Skills

  • Proficiency in at least one programming language with strong typing discipline (TypeScript, Python, Java, C++, Rust, or Julia)
  • Familiarity with REST API design patterns: HTTP methods, JSON request/response schemas, status codes, and client-side error handling
  • Working knowledge of React or equivalent component-based frontend framework, OR demonstrated experience with scientific computing / numerical methods in Python, MATLAB, Julia, or C++
