Remote Serdes information

What is a remote SerDes?

Remote SerDes stands for Remote Serializer/Deserializer. They are specialized hardware or software modules used to convert parallel data into serial data and vice versa, enabling high-speed data transmission over long distances, often between different components or systems. In a remote context, SerDes are typically used to connect devices that are physically separated, such as in data centers, telecommunications, or distributed embedded systems. Their main function is to reduce the number of data lines required and ensure reliable, high-bandwidth communication, even over extended distances.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a SerDes engineer?

To thrive as a SerDes Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering, signal integrity, and high-speed circuit design, typically supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with simulation tools like SPICE, EDA software (such as Cadence or Synopsys), and knowledge of industry standards (like PCIe or Ethernet) are essential. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork set top performers apart in this role. These skills ensure the reliable design and implementation of high-speed serial interfaces crucial for modern communication systems.

What are some common challenges faced by remote SerDes engineers when collaborating with distributed teams?

Remote SerDes (Serializer/Deserializer) engineers often work with teams spread across different locations and time zones, which can present challenges in communication and coordination. It’s important to establish clear documentation practices, regular virtual meetings, and effective use of collaborative tools to ensure smooth project progress. Additionally, aligning on design specifications and debugging complex signal integrity issues can require proactive communication and a willingness to leverage screen-sharing or remote lab resources. Successful remote SerDes engineers are adaptable and skilled at bridging gaps between hardware, firmware, and systems teams.

What is the difference between Remote Serdes vs Remote Network Engineer?

AspectRemote SerdesRemote Network Engineer
Required CredentialsElectronics or Electrical Engineering degree, certifications like Cisco CCNA or CCNPComputer Science or Networking degree, certifications like Cisco CCNA, CCNP, or CompTIA Network+
Work EnvironmentDesigning and testing high-speed data transmission hardware, often in labs or R&D settingsManaging and troubleshooting network infrastructure remotely, including routers, switches, and firewalls
Industry UsageTelecommunications, semiconductor, and electronics manufacturingIT service providers, enterprise networks, data centers

Remote Serdes professionals focus on designing and testing high-speed serial data transmission hardware, while Remote Network Engineers manage and troubleshoot network infrastructure remotely. Both roles require networking certifications and involve technical work, but they differ in their core responsibilities and industry applications.

Job description

Locations available: San Diego and San Jose, California or Austin, Texas

Job Description:

NXP's SerDes Networking Solution (SNS) team delivers open-standard Automotive SerDes Alliance (ASA) Motion Link multi-Gigabit connectivity for next-generation sensors and vehicle displays. As part of the Applications Engineering team, you will work with both internal engineering teams to develop collaterals to ease customer adoption of our SerDes solutions, as well as with NXP's field teams and customer engineering teams to ensure successful system design and bring-up.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with IC design, systems, FW, and test teams to translate field issues and customer requirements into product improvements and new features.
  • Review customer schematics and layouts for signalintegrity and powerintegrity best practices (impedance control, terminations, return paths, via design, reference plane strategy).
  • Lead boardlevel bringup and validation using oscilloscopes, protocol analyzers; generate test reports and recommendations.
  • Provide onsite or remote debug support for complex customer issues.
  • Develop and maintain application collateral: reference designs, layout guidelines, design checklists, characterization reports, application notes, training materials.
  • Participate in trade shows and provide FAE training

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or above in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or related field.
  • Extensive experience (12+ years) in hardware design, applications engineering, or system validation.
  • Familiarity with high-speed data communication protocols and interfaces, including Ethernet networking and switching, MIPI CSI-2, and display protocols (DP/eDP)
  • Strong understanding of highspeed SerDes fundamentals: channel loss, reflections, return loss, insertion loss, ISI, jitter, equalization, and clocking.
  • Demonstrated experience with multiGbps serial links (e.g., Ethernet, PCIe, DP, USB3.x/USB4, proprietary SerDes).
  • Proficiency with SI/PI tools and simulations (e.g., Sparameter analysis, eye/jitter simulations) and comfort interpreting simulation and measurement correlation.
  • Handson experience using lab equipment: highbandwidth oscilloscopes, TDR, VNA, BERT, protocol analyzers, logic analyzers, and related tools.
  • Strong skills in PCB design for highspeed: layer stackup, routing constraints, differential pairs, reference planes, decoupling, and power delivery.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills to explain complex technical topics to both expert and nonexpert audiences.
  • Ability to work effectively with global, crossfunctional teams (design, systems, test, marketing, field).
