Senior Director, Medical Affairs

Atsena Therapeutics is a clinical-stage gene therapy company leveraging novel AAV capsids for the treatment and prevention of blindness caused by inherited retinal disease. We pride ourselves on being at the cutting edge of ocular gene therapeutics and bringing them to the clinic with excellence, integrity, and urgency. Our lead programs, gene therapies for X-linked retinoschisis (XLRS) and GUCY2D- Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA1) are entering pivotal trials in 2026. We are also advancing additional preclinical programs to treat other forms of inherited retinal diseases.


Position Summary:

The Senior Director, Medical Affairs is a strategic leadership role responsible for driving the development and execution of medical affairs plans at Atsena Therapeutics. This individual will shape the medical affairs strategy including: leading scientific communications, publication strategy, and medical education efforts, while serving as a cross-functional partner across Clinical Development, Commercial, Field Medical, and external stakeholders. The Senior Director will bring deep expertise in medical affairs operations, medical strategy and scientific communications in addition to strong commitment to advancing Atsena's gene therapy pipeline for inherited retinal diseases.

The successful candidate will work cross-functionally, compliantly, and effectively in a fast-paced, clinical-stage biotech environment while supporting Atsenas pipeline across the product lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities


  • Drive development, implementation, and dissemination of the global medical plan.
  • Work collaboratively with key stakeholders across alliances and external partnerships.
  • Develop and manage the Scientific Communications budget.
  • Strategize, develop, and drive publication strategy including manuscripts, congress posters, and presentations.
  • Lead all medical meeting planning, including: strategy, activities, key intelligence topics and execution.
  • Lead project management of competitive intelligence efforts and disseminate insights to internal partners.
  • Lead collaborative work with the Field Medical team on resource development from conception to approval.
  • Conduct tailored product trainings that meet the needs of diverse audiences across the organization.
  • Ensure scientific accuracy by supporting project leads including medical review of materials.
  • Lead integration of the medical education program including grants strategy, areas of interest, and CME/IME compliance within the broader scientific communications strategy
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with key internal and external stakeholders.
  • Manage, screen, and identify vendors to support medical affairs initiatives.
  • Oversee medical affairs operations including sponsorships and contracts.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Advanced scientific degree required: PhD, PharmD, or MD in a relevant discipline.
  • Significant experience in Medical Affairs within the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry; experience in ophthalmology, rare disease, and/or gene therapy required.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting or leading a drug launch in a Medical Affairs capacity.
  • 10+ years of progressive Medical Affairs experience in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry, with a demonstrated track record of increasing responsibility, leadership growth, and impact across roles.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and execute scientific communications, publications, and medical affairs strategies.
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills with experience working across Medical Affairs, Clinical Development, Commercial, and external partners.
  • Experience in budget management and vendor oversight.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally approximately 50% of the time.
