What challenges do interns face in remote risk management internships, and how can they be overcome?

Remote risk management interns often face challenges such as limited in-person mentorship, difficulty accessing proprietary data, and staying connected with the team. To overcome these, it's important to proactively schedule regular check-ins with supervisors, utilize collaboration tools for effective communication, and seek out feedback through virtual channels. Building a strong rapport with your team and taking initiative in group projects can also help you maximize learning and contribute meaningfully despite the remote environment.

What is a remote risk management internship?

Remote risk management internships are temporary, entry-level positions where students or recent graduates work from home or any location outside of a traditional office to learn about identifying, analyzing, and mitigating risks for businesses or organizations. These internships often involve tasks such as assisting with risk assessments, conducting research, analyzing data, and supporting the development of risk management strategies. Interns usually communicate with their teams through digital tools and gain valuable experience in the field, which can help them pursue a career in risk management or related areas.

What skills and qualifications are needed for a remote risk management internship?

To succeed as a Remote Risk Management Intern, you typically need analytical skills, attention to detail, and a background in finance, business, or a related field. Strong communication, problem-solving abilities, and self-motivation are important soft skills for collaborating remotely and managing tasks independently. These competencies are crucial for accurately identifying risks, contributing to team projects, and adapting to the challenges of a remote work environment.

Job description

OCCU is a member-owned credit union based in Eugene, Oregon, guided by a clear and meaningful vision: to Enrich Lives. This purpose drives everything we do—from how we serve our members to how we support one another as colleagues. With a strong commitment to community impact, OCCU lives its values of tenacity, humility, and big-heartedness every day.

We are currently seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Regulatory Compliance Analyst to support OCCU’s Compliance Management System and help ensure regulatory requirements, risk management practices, and credit union policies are effectively applied across the organization.

This is a remote opportunity for candidates residing in the U.S. To support team collaboration and business needs, candidates must be able to consistently work Pacific Time hours. While candidates located in Oregon, Washington, or Idaho are preferred, we welcome applicants from other U.S. locations who can meet the Pacific Time schedule requirement. The salary range for this role is $33.50–$42.50 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.

The Regulatory Compliance Analyst supports OCCU’s compliance program through regulatory research, monitoring, risk management, and day-to-day guidance for business units. This role helps OCCU stay informed of federal and state requirements, industry best practices, and risk issues that impact operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist compliance management in maintaining OCCU’s Compliance Management System and overall compliance program.
  • Provide regulatory compliance support to business units across the organization, including researching laws, regulations, and unique compliance questions as they arise.
  • Support compliance monitoring activities by reviewing procedures and processes, conducting research, preparing workpapers, recommending corrective action, and assisting with reports for senior management.
  • Track remediation efforts related to examinations, audits, and compliance monitoring assignments.
  • Develop, review, and revise compliance knowledge assets to ensure alignment with applicable federal and state regulations.
  • Review marketing and advertising pieces or initiatives to help ensure compliance with federal and state regulatory requirements.
  • Assist with compliance training functions, including creating, preparing, conducting, reviewing, and tracking training as needed.
  • Monitor pending or proposed regulatory changes and communicate relevant updates to management when assigned.
  • Support regulatory audits and examinations by gathering applicable data, documents, and materials, and assisting business lines with verification of findings and remediation plans.
  • Identify opportunities to improve compliance practices, maintain confidentiality of sensitive information, and promote a positive compliance culture.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Minimum of three years of demonstrated experience working in banking compliance within the financial services industry.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of federal and state regulatory compliance related to deposit, lending, commercial, and small business areas.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret rules, regulations, interpretive letters, and regulatory communications from federal, state, and prudential regulatory agencies, including CFPB, OCC, FDIC, NCUA, and FRB.
  • Demonstrated experience in deposit and lending operations.
  • Experience identifying, interpreting, and reporting critical information to leadership, individual contributors, auditors, senior managers, and supervisory committee members.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple and overlapping projects with dependencies across teams.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate across departments, build cross-functional relationships, and influence independently.
  • Effective research, writing, and analytical skills, including the ability to work with large amounts of data.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to high-quality, accurate work.
  • Proven ability to use tools, software, and collaborative systems effectively.
  • Strong communication, decision-making, planning, organization, quality orientation, and technical/professional knowledge skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree required and/or demonstrated experience driving measurable business outcomes; an equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain relevant training and certifications while in the position.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience supporting compliance programs within a credit union or similar financial institution.
  • Experience with compliance monitoring, audit response, examination preparation, and remediation tracking.
  • Experience reviewing marketing or advertising materials for regulatory compliance.
  • Experience creating or supporting compliance training materials and tracking training completion.
  • Familiarity with monitoring pending or proposed regulatory changes and communicating potential business impacts.
  • Relevant compliance training, certifications, or demonstrated commitment to maintaining current regulatory knowledge.

Why Join OCCU:

OCCU offers a comprehensive compensation and benefits package designed to support your well-being and professional growth, including:

  • Low-cost medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) retirement plan with employer match
  • Paid time off plus 13 paid holidays
  • Tuition reimbursement for eligible education and training
  • Company-paid long-term disability
  • 40 hours of company-paid core time annually for full-time employees to participate in community volunteer opportunities

OCCU is an Equal Opportunity Employer and welcomes applications from all qualified candidates. If you’re a detail-oriented compliance professional who thrives on research, collaboration, risk management, and supporting a strong compliance culture, we encourage you to apply!
