Remote Reservoir Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Reservoir Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Reservoir Engineer, you need a strong background in petroleum engineering, reservoir simulation, and data analysis, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with software like Petrel, Eclipse, or CMG, as well as proficiency in remote collaboration tools and data visualization platforms, is essential. Excellent problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and self-motivation set outstanding candidates apart in remote settings. These skills ensure effective reservoir management, accurate forecasting, and seamless teamwork despite physical distance.

What are remote reservoir engineers?

Remote reservoir engineers are professionals who analyze and manage oil and gas reservoirs using digital tools and technologies, often working from locations outside the physical site. They use data from sensors, simulation software, and remote monitoring systems to optimize reservoir performance, plan extraction strategies, and maximize recovery. This role allows companies to leverage expertise from anywhere in the world, reducing travel and increasing efficiency while still ensuring the safe and effective management of subsurface resources.

What is the difference between Remote Reservoir Engineer vs Remote Petroleum Engineer?

Work EnvironmentField data analysis, reservoir modeling, software-based tasksDrilling, production optimization, data analysis
Industry UsageOil & gas exploration, reservoir managementExploration, drilling, production operations

Remote Reservoir Engineers focus on subsurface reservoir modeling and management, often working with software and data analysis. Remote Petroleum Engineers have a broader scope, including drilling and production activities. Both roles require similar credentials and are used within the oil and gas industry, but their daily tasks differ based on specialization.

How does a remote reservoir engineer typically collaborate with on-site teams to optimize reservoir performance?

As a remote reservoir engineer, collaboration with on-site teams is primarily achieved through regular virtual meetings, data sharing platforms, and real-time monitoring tools. Engineers analyze reservoir data, generate models, and provide recommendations, while maintaining close communication with field operators and geoscientists. Effective collaboration relies on clear documentation and timely updates to ensure that all stakeholders are aligned on project goals and operational adjustments. This approach allows remote engineers to contribute valuable insights and support decision-making despite not being physically present on location.

  • Develop Python-based proofs-of-concept to validate use cases and demonstrate platform capabilities.
  • Lead on-site deployments, integrations, and user onboarding (including multi-day customer visits).
  • Translate quantum and reservoir computing concepts into practical business value for diverse audiences.
  • Support the sales cycle through technical discovery, demos, solution design, and proposal inputs.
  • Represent QCi at conferences and events by delivering live demos and engaging prospects.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Sales, Engineering, Product, Data Science, and Marketing to deliver tailored solutions and aligned customer experiences.

Required Skills and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Information Technology, Natural Sciences, or related technical/business field.
  • Master's degree or quantum/AI focus preferred.
  • 5-8+ years in customer-facing technical roles (Solutions Engineering, Sales Engineering, Technical Account Management, Customer Success Engineering, Application Engineering).
  • Strong track record supporting sales cycles, delivering demos, and enabling technical decision-making.
  • Advanced Python proficiency, including scripting, prototyping, data libraries (pandas, numpy), and experience supporting embedded software or internal tools.
  • Understanding of resource access, system permissions, APIs, and basic architecture principles.
  • Experience in on-site deployments, system integrations, hardware/software configuration, and troubleshooting.
  • Confident public speaker capable of representing QCi at industry events and customer briefings.
  • Excellent written/verbal communication and the ability to break down complex concepts for any audience.
  • Strong organization, prioritization, and problem-solving skills in fast-moving environments.
  • Experience with collaboration/support tools such as Jira, Confluence, Salesforce, and ticketing systems.
  • Willingness to travel 30-50%, including multi-day onsite customer engagements (3-5 days).
