What is remote reproductive justice?

Remote reproductive justice refers to the advocacy and work for equitable access to reproductive health, rights, and justice using digital tools or working from locations outside traditional office settings. This can involve offering virtual support, education, policy advocacy, or direct services related to reproductive health, especially for communities facing barriers to in-person care. The concept builds on the broader reproductive justice movement, which addresses not only the right to reproductive healthcare but also the social, economic, and political inequalities that impact individuals’ ability to make choices about their bodies.

How do professionals in remote reproductive justice roles effectively collaborate with on-the-ground partners and community organizations?

Remote reproductive justice professionals frequently work with diverse teams and community organizations across different regions. They rely on strong communication skills and digital collaboration tools, such as video conferencing, project management software, and secure messaging platforms, to coordinate advocacy efforts, share resources, and develop educational materials. Building trust and maintaining regular contact with local partners is essential to ensure that initiatives are culturally responsive and community-driven. Additionally, remote workers often participate in virtual coalition meetings and online trainings to stay aligned with broader movement goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote reproductive justice advocate, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Reproductive Justice Advocate, you need a solid grounding in reproductive rights, social justice, and public health, often supported by a relevant degree or advocacy experience. Job Title: Hybrid (Remote/On-site) Interpreter (On-Call)
Location: Remote / New York City
Program Overview:
We are looking for qualified interpreters for any of the following languages to provide on-site consecutive and simultaneous interpretation services throughout the five boroughs of NYC and remotely.
You would be a great fit for this position if you are a self-starter who can provide reliable and professional interpretation services in any of the languages above and live within the NYC area. This role requires managing a flexible schedule, traveling to clients (within 5 boroughs of NYC), and establishing dependable communication. The ideal candidate will successfully collaborate with service providers to use their gift of language to serve their community.
This is an on-call, hourly opportunity to support the court-related legal interpretation service.
Job Duties:
  • Provide exact and expert interpretation to English from a variety of other languages for meetings, depositions, interviews, and testimony of witnesses before the jury and at trial.
  • Convert spoken statements from one language to another in various settings. This involves listening to, understanding content, then converting statements into the target language.
  • Interpret accurately and completely with knowledge of subject matter and interpreter protocol.
  • Provide services in three different modes of interpretation: simultaneous, consecutive, and sight translation. All three modes involve highly complex cognitive activity, in as much as the interpreter must immediately comprehend, analyze, and convert the source message into the target language spoken equivalent.
    • Simultaneous interpreting requires the interpreter to convey continuously the full and accurate meaning of what is said in the source language into speech in the target language, lagging just slightly behind the original message. Simultaneous interpretation may take place in settings where no pauses or interruptions are possible and is typically delivered using specialized equipment in a sound-proof booth.
  • Consecutive interpretation requires the interpreter to listen, comprehend, translate, and reproduce the original message after the speaker or signer pauses such as in the question and answer mode in which the speaker completes his statement and the interpreter begins to interpret after the statement is completed.
  • Sight translation requires the interpreter to immediately convey into the spoken target language the meaning of a document written in the source language. It occurs in such settings as medical interviews, witness interrogations, court proceedings, and international meetings.

Minimum Qualifications
  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Reside in the greater New York City area
  • Be willing to travel to all 5 boroughs of New York City.
  • One (1) year of experience interpreting in a judicial environment
  • For remote: Have access to the Internet, quiet workspace, and computer/phone.
  • Knowledgeable of both English and the foreign language vocabularies typically used in formal, consultative, and casual modes of communication in justice system contexts, including colloquial slang, idiosyncratic slang, and regionalism.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Court certified and have minimum of. Federal, State or the national Association of Judiciary Interpreters and Translators (NAJIT) Judiciary interpreters and Translators Certification Examination (JITCE) certification will be accepted.
