Job description

Location: US Remote, with preference for those in proximity to current EDF Office locations (Austin, TX; Boston, MA; Boulder, CO; New York, NY; Raleigh, NC; San Francisco, CA; Washington D.C.).

Duration: This is a 2-year fixed-term position, with full benefits and the possibility of extension.

Overview

The Editorial team serves as EDF's in-house journalists. We produce Solutions, EDF's printed quarterly member magazine, and Vital Signs, our digital media outlet. The Editorial team sits within EDF's Marketing team.

Overall Function

The Reporter/Editor will report to EDF's Editorial Director and will be responsible for surfacing, researching, writing and editing stories for Solutions and Vital Signs. We produce high-quality journalistic content, including deeply reported, human-centered features, news stories, service pieces and analyses that meet key audiences where they are. We highlight the human impact of environmental decisions, EDF wins and expertise, raise brand awareness and build trust in EDF as a credible source of information to help drive engagement.

We are looking for an experienced print and digital reporter and editor adept at covering nuanced, complex topics and transforming technical information into lively, compelling content for lay audiences. The Reporter/Editor will be both a self-starter - taking the initiative to surface new ideas and approaches - and an enthusiastic collaborator who is keen to work with editors and subject matter experts to hone and elevate their final product.

Key Responsibilities

  • Surface and pitch compelling stories that resonate with our audiences by staying abreast of EDF's work and the news cycle as it pertains to our key issues.

  • Report, write and edit engaging, human-centered stories that are on brand and effective across print and digital platforms.

  • Collaborate with editors and subject matter experts to ensure content is expertly written, jargon-free and accurate, reflects EDF values and adheres to brand guidelines on AP style, voice and tone.

  • Manage feedback from multiple stakeholders while holding the line on editorial quality.

  • Tighten and cut text, making sure every word earns its place.

  • Work with designers, videographers and a photo coordinator to develop accompanying visuals (graphics, photos, videos and other interactive formats).

  • Collaborate with Marketing team colleagues on promotional campaigns

  • Travel approximately twice each year, and on rare occasions work outside of standard office hours when deadlines and breaking news dictate.

  • Participatesin advancing EDF's organizational effectiveness and culture goals, so people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included, and empowered to address the environmental and organizational challenges in ways that align with EDF values.

Qualifications

  • At least 6years' related work experience, preferably including journalism. Must be comfortable in both print and digital writing and editing. Experience in marketing and/or nonprofits a plus.

  • Excellent research reporting and interviewing skills. Editing experience preferred.

  • A writing style that is crystal clear, jargon-free, concise and engaging, no matter what the topic or audience.

  • Ability to generate creative ideas and operate independently to meet deadlines yet also thrive on collaboration and feedback.

  • Top-notch people skills - proven ability to navigate relationships across a large organization with positivity, humor and grace

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills; able to juggle multiple deadlines, shifting priorities and complex projects with multiple stakeholders.

  • Experience implementing SEO and other digital media strategies; familiarity with web analytics, AEO/GEO and audience engagement a plus.

  • Experience selecting imagery and helping to develop editorial graphics and infographics.

  • Comfortable using Drupal or a similar content management system.

  • Working knowledge of environmental issues preferred. Particular interest/expertise in subjects related to EDF's core areas of work, a plus.

  • Demonstrates self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity, and ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across diverse cultures and backgrounds.
