  • You will serve as boiler plant operator on a rotating watch assignment, operating, maintaining, and performing preventive maintenance on high pressure utility boilers and related machinery, equipment and systems.
  • You will independently start, operate, adjust, stop, maintain, and perform various operational repairs in multiple-fuel (oil and natural gas) power boilers and associated auxiliary and pollution control equipment.
  • You will check measurement devices (e.g., feed water regulators, flow meters, flue gas temperature gauges, water level indicators) to determine if boilers are operating within prescribed limits.
  • You will perform operational maintenance and make repairs of limited/moderate complexity on mechanical or electrical parts.
  • You will maintain narrative log on plant operating conditions and communicate plant status to supervisor, leader, and next shift operators.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver's license.
  • You will be required as a minimum to possess, or obtain within 12 months of on-board date, a valid third-class operator license using the National Association of Power Engineers criteria or its equivalent.
  • You will be required to be certified as a state of Virginia Visible Emissions Evaluator if testing provided.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: THE ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION. Your resume must show that you have the ability to perform common tasks including:
1. Starting, operating, adjusting, stopping, maintaining, and performing various operational repairs on single or multiple fuel power boilers while providing technical assistance on difficult or unusual problems
2. Testing feed water, boiler water, and condensate using standard tests and determine the treatment and chemicals to be used to control boiler chemistry.
3. Troubleshooting and performing preventive maintenance on boiler plant and electrical generating equipment and their associated auxiliaries.
