Remote Rail Testing Jobs in Florida (NOW HIRING)

Remote Rail Testing information

What are some common challenges encountered by professionals in remote rail testing roles, and how are they typically addressed?

Professionals in remote rail testing often face challenges related to maintaining reliable communication with on-site teams, interpreting test data without direct access to equipment, and troubleshooting technical issues from a distance. These challenges are typically addressed through the use of advanced remote monitoring tools, thorough training in diagnostic software, and establishing clear protocols for collaboration with field personnel. Additionally, strong documentation practices and regular virtual meetings help ensure that remote testers stay aligned with project goals and safety standards.

What is the difference between Remote Rail Testing vs Rail Inspection Technician?

AspectRemote Rail TestingRail Inspection Technician
CredentialsTypically requires certifications in non-destructive testing (NDT), geospatial data, or specialized rail testing toolsOften requires certifications in rail safety, track inspection, or NDT
Work EnvironmentPrimarily remote or field-based with specialized equipment, sometimes involving remote data analysisOn-site at rail tracks, performing physical inspections and assessments
Industry UsageUsed by rail companies for large-scale track assessments, often involving remote sensing technologyUsed for routine track inspections, maintenance planning, and safety assessments

Remote Rail Testing and Rail Inspection Technicians both focus on rail safety and maintenance. Remote Rail Testing emphasizes remote data collection and analysis, often involving advanced technology, while Rail Inspection Technicians perform on-site physical inspections. Both roles are essential for ensuring track integrity but differ mainly in work environment and methods.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Rail Testing Technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Rail Testing Technician, you need a solid background in mechanical or electrical engineering principles, experience with rail systems, and often a relevant technical certification or degree. Proficiency with ultrasonic or electromagnetic rail testing equipment, data analysis software, and remote monitoring systems is typically required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills set top performers apart in this role. These competencies are crucial for ensuring the safety and reliability of rail infrastructure, minimizing downtime, and maintaining high operational standards.

What is remote rail testing?

Remote rail testing refers to the process of inspecting and evaluating railroad tracks and infrastructure using advanced technologies operated from a distance. This usually involves the use of specialized equipment such as sensors, drones, or automated vehicles to detect track defects, cracks, and other safety concerns without the need for manual, on-site inspections. Remote rail testing helps improve efficiency, safety, and accuracy in maintaining railway systems while reducing the need for human presence in potentially hazardous environments.

Primary Objective: The SDET is not just a tester, but a developer focused on testability. You will own the architecture and scaling of the automated testing ecosystem, treating test code with the same rigor as production code to build scalable, self-healing automation suites that keep pace with AI-accelerated development and empower our Android and Web teams to ship with 100% confidence. Working alongside our Android and Front End Engineering teams, you will design and build automated testing frameworks that cover the entire product ecosystem-from responsive web interfaces to native mobile experiences and the APIs that connect them.

Responsibilities include:

  • Unified Automation: Design and maintain automated test frameworks that support both Web (React/Vue/Angular) and Mobile (Android) platforms using modern tools like Playwright or Cypress.
  • Test Strategy: Partner with Front End and Android engineers to define "Definition of Done" and ensure testability is baked into every feature from the design phase.
  • API & Integration: Develop automated tests for RESTful APIs to ensure the backend supports both the web and mobile front ends seamlessly, including performance and load simulation testing
  • CI/CD & Infrastructure: Embed automated suites (smoke, functional, and regression) into the deployment pipeline (GitHub Actions/Jenkins) to enable rapid, confident releases and manage test infrastructure.
  • Bug Lifecycle: Identify, document, and troubleshoot complex issues that span across mobile and web environments, providing deep technical analysis.
  • Performance & UX: Proactively monitor and analyze app performance and responsiveness using logging tools, establishing and reporting against quantitative performance benchmarks (e.g., load times, resource utilization) to ensure the Android app and Web app meet high standards for user experience.
  • Quality Advocacy: Act as a quality evangelist, mentoring developers on writing effective unit tests and promoting a "quality-first" mindset across the engineering department.
  • Technical Mentorship: Drive the adoption of best practices and lead the technical growth of the QA team by providing hands-on mentorship, conducting code reviews, and establishing engineering standards to enhance scripting capabilities and automation skill sets.
  • AI-Augmented Quality Gates: Drive the strategy and implementation of Generative AI for test automation, including setting up tools (e.g., Atlassian Rovo Dev or equivalents) to automatically generate E2E, and regression test cases directly from Jira User Stories.

Technical Skills:

  • Frameworks: High proficiency in Playwright, Cypress, or Selenium (for Web) and Appium or Espresso (for Android).
  • Languages: Strong coding skills in JavaScript/TypeScript (to align with Front End) or Java/Kotlin (to align with Android).
  • Tools: Experience with Git, CI/CD tools (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or GitLab CI), API testing tools (Postman/Insomnia), cross-device/cross-browser tools (e.g., Browserstack, leveraging its AI testing toolkit), and project/test management tools (Jira, Confluence, Test Rail, leveraging features like Atlassian Rovo Dev for test generation and maintenance).
  • Observability / Logging Tools: Experience utilizing application monitoring and logging tools, including using AI/ML tools to identify anomalies in performance and logging data to preemptively catch issues and analyze performance trends.

This position is open to external candidates in Florida, North Carolina, or Texas and offers the flexibility of remote work. Internal candidates are also encouraged to apply.

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in a dedicated SDET or QA Automation role.
  • Proven Mobile Experience: Specific experience testing native Android applications (familiarity with ADB, emulators, and mobile-specific edge cases).
  • Web Expertise: Deep understanding of the DOM, CSS selectors, and browser-based debugging.
  • Cloud & Infrastructure: Working knowledge of cloud platforms and containerization technologies to troubleshoot or optimize CI/CD test environments.
  • Agile Proficiency: Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment alongside specialized platform engineers.
  • Analytical Mindset: Ability to trace a bug from a UI glitch down to a specific API response or code logic error, with a strong passion for finding and documenting 'edge cases' that others might miss.

This position is open to external candidates in Florida, North Carolina, or Texas and offers the flexibility of remote work. Internal candidates are also encouraged to apply.
