As our organization continues to grow, we are seeking an experienced medical coder to join our remote coding team.
Position Summary
The Remote Behavioral Health Medical Coder is responsible for reviewing provider documentation and accurately assigning ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, and E/M codes for behavioral health services. This position requires independent coding judgment, attention to detail, and a thorough understanding of official coding guidelines to support accurate reimbursement and regulatory compliance.
The ideal candidate is an experienced coder who values coding accuracy, works well independently, and collaborates professionally with internal departments.
Key Responsibilities
Medical Coding
  - Review provider documentation and assign accurate ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, and E/M codes.
  - Code inpatient and outpatient behavioral health encounters in accordance with official coding guidelines.
  - Ensure documentation supports all assigned codes.
  - Identify documentation deficiencies requiring clarification through the established internal process.
  - Research coding questions using official coding resources and payer guidance.
  - Maintain coding accuracy while meeting departmental productivity expectations.
Collaboration
  - Work collaboratively with billing and internal departments to resolve coding-related issues.
  - Maintain professional communication while working with multiple departments and personalities.
  - Participate in coding quality initiatives and ongoing education.
Compliance
  - Maintain HIPAA compliance and protect all Protected Health Information (PHI).
  - Stay current on ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, and E/M guideline updates.
  - Follow company policies and remote work expectations.
Required Qualifications
  - Current AHIMA Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) credential required.
  - Minimum three (3) years of professional medical coding experience required; five (5) or more years preferred.
  - Behavioral health coding experience strongly preferred.
  - Experience coding both inpatient and outpatient encounters.
  - Thorough knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, and current E/M guidelines.
  - Ability to independently review provider documentation, apply official coding guidelines, and accurately assign codes with minimal supervision.
  - Must demonstrate excellent coding judgment and the ability to support coding decisions using official coding guidelines.
  - Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  - Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
  - Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  - Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities while maintaining coding quality.
Preferred Qualifications
  - Familiarity with Tebra Practice Management/EHR.
  - Experience working within multiple electronic health record systems.
  - Previous remote coding experience.
