Remote Python Gis information

What is a remote Python GIS job?

A remote Python GIS job involves working with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) using the Python programming language, but from a location outside of a traditional office, such as from home or anywhere with internet access. Professionals in this role typically analyze spatial data, develop geospatial applications, and automate GIS workflows using Python libraries like GeoPandas, Shapely, and ArcPy. Remote GIS Python developers often collaborate with teams virtually, contribute to mapping projects, and help solve geographic problems across various industries such as environmental science, urban planning, and logistics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Python GIS Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Python GIS Specialist, you need strong expertise in Python programming, geospatial data analysis, and a background in geography, GIS, or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as ArcGIS, QGIS, and libraries like GeoPandas or GDAL, as well as experience with version control systems like Git, is typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective remote communication skills help professionals excel in distributed teams. These skills are crucial for delivering accurate geospatial solutions and collaborating efficiently in a remote work environment.

How do remote Python GIS professionals typically collaborate with team members and stakeholders on geospatial projects?

Remote Python GIS professionals often work closely with cross-functional teams, including data analysts, project managers, and domain experts, using virtual communication and collaboration tools. They participate in regular video meetings, share progress via project management platforms, and use version control systems like Git to manage code collaboratively. Effective communication and clear documentation are crucial, as team members may be distributed across different time zones. Additionally, remote GIS professionals frequently present their findings and visualizations to stakeholders, adapting technical outputs for non-technical audiences.

What is the difference between Remote Python Gis vs Remote GIS Analyst?

Job description

About the Position

We are seeking a Solutions Engineer to join our team on a 6-month contract basis, preferably based in San Francisco, California. The successful candidate will leverage software engineering skills to design, build, and deploy custom internal applications using Python and JavaScript across multiple teams. As our project pipeline grows rapidly, we need purpose-built tools that drive time savings, operational efficiency, and faster project deployment. This role will focus on building applications that support core business functions—such as automating data pipelines for project siting and land analysis, creating dashboards for energy market and portfolio reporting, and integrating systems to reduce manual handoffs across our development, finance, and operations teams. The ideal candidate brings strong software fundamentals, fluency with modern AI-assisted development workflows, and enough domain awareness to translate business needs into effective technical solutions in a fast-paced renewable energy environment.

Responsibilities and Essential Functions

  • Application Development: Design and build custom internal tools and applications using Python and JavaScript to support workflows across development, finance, and operations teams.
  • AI-Assisted Development: Leverage modern AI-assisted coding tools and workflows to rapidly prototype, iterate, and deliver production-quality software solutions.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with stakeholders across the organization to identify pain points, gather requirements, and translate business needs into technical solutions.
  • Integration and Automation: Build integrations between internal systems, cloud services, and third-party platforms to streamline data flows and reduce manual processes.
  • GIS and Spatial Applications: Develop or enhance GIS-enabled applications and spatial data pipelines to support energy project siting, analysis, and reporting.
  • Code Quality and Version Control: Maintain clean, well-documented codebases using Git, participate in code reviews, and follow best practices for collaborative development.
  • Cloud Infrastructure: Deploy and manage applications and services within Azure cloud environments, including VMs, app services, and data storage.

Qualifications and Key Skills

  • 3+ years of professional experience in software engineering, solutions engineering, or a related technical role.
  • Strong proficiency in Python and JavaScript, with experience building web applications, APIs, or internal tools.
  • Demonstrated experience with AI-assisted software development tools and workflows (e.g., Claude Code, Copilot, Cursor, or similar).
  • Proficiency with Git and modern version control practices.
  • Experience working with cloud platforms, preferably Microsoft Azure (VMs, App Services, DevOps, or similar).
  • Preference for candidates with GIS experience (ArcGIS Pro, ArcPy, QGIS, PostGIS, or spatial data libraries).
  • Preference for candidates with prior experience in energy development, ideally renewable energy (wind, solar, or storage).
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple concurrent projects in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, GIS, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Compensation and Location

  • Job Type: 6-month contract (with potential for extension or conversion).
  • Compensation: Competitive contract rate commensurate with experience.
  • Location: San Francisco, California preferred. Remote candidates will be considered for exceptional applicants.
