Volunteer Opportunity: Expert Public Relations & Outreach Manager

Organization: A Free Bird | 501(c)(3) Nonprofit

Location: Remote

Commitment: 5–10 hours per week | Minimum 6–month commitment

This is an unpaid role.

Join the Mission of A Free Bird

A Free Bird is seeking a highly skilled Public Relations & Outreach Manager (Volunteer) with proven expertise, strong industry connections, and experience elevating organizations through strategic communications and publication support.

Ideal Candidate Brings:

  • Advanced experience in public relations, outreach strategy, or media consulting
  • Strong connections within the PR, media, and publication world
  • Ability to guide high-level communication planning and execution
  • Excellent editorial, storytelling, and message development skills
  • Experience supporting nonprofits or mission-driven organizations (preferred)
  • Confidence in building partnerships, relationships, and media visibility

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead PR and outreach strategy to strengthen organizational visibility
  • Consult leadership on communications, press positioning, and messaging
  • Build and manage relationships with journalists, editors, and media partners
  • Create and refine press releases, pitches, publication content, and outreach materials
  • Support major programs and events with expert-level PR guidance
  • Help secure local and national media features through network and outreach

Commitment Expectations:

To help our teams collaborate effectively, all volunteers are expected to:

  • Commit at least 6 months
  • Contribute approximately 5-10 hours per week
  • Attend our 30-minute virtual team meetings every Tuesday and Thursday
  • Communicate proactively and work collaboratively with fellow volunteers

We're looking for individuals who are excited to grow with the team and can consistently participate in our weekly meetings.
