Remote Public Lands information

What are some common challenges faced by remote public lands managers, and how can job seekers prepare for them?

Remote public lands managers often encounter challenges such as limited access to resources, unpredictable weather conditions, and the need to make decisions independently due to physical isolation. To succeed, candidates should be comfortable with self-directed work, possess strong problem-solving skills, and have experience in remote communication and project management. Building familiarity with GIS tools and remote monitoring technology can also be advantageous, as these are frequently used to oversee land stewardship from afar. Additionally, cultivating strong relationships with local stakeholders and field staff is essential for effective collaboration and achieving conservation goals.

Remote Public Lands professionals focus on managing and conserving public lands through environmental and GIS work, often collaborating with government agencies. Remote Land Surveyors specialize in measuring and mapping land, requiring surveying licenses. While both roles involve fieldwork and work in outdoor environments, their certifications and primary responsibilities differ. Understanding these distinctions helps job seekers find the right remote position aligned with their skills and credentials.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Public Lands Manager, and why are they important?

To excel as a Remote Public Lands Manager, you need a background in environmental science, natural resource management, or a related field, often supported by a relevant degree and field experience. Familiarity with GIS mapping software, remote sensing tools, and land management databases is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and self-motivation are vital soft skills for handling isolated environments and stakeholder collaboration. These competencies ensure effective stewardship of public lands, balancing conservation goals with public access and resource use.

What are remote public lands?

Remote public lands are areas of federally or state-owned land that are located far from urban centers and are often minimally developed. These lands can include national forests, wilderness areas, national parks, and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) holdings. Remote public lands are typically used for recreation, conservation, wildlife habitat, and sometimes for resource extraction, while providing opportunities for solitude and natural experiences. Access can be challenging due to limited infrastructure, but these areas are important for preserving natural ecosystems and supporting outdoor activities like hiking, camping, and hunting.

Job description

Top level summary:

Planet Reimagined is seeking an organized, adaptable, and motivated fundraising professional to support a robust institutional philanthropy program and newly established major donor initiatives through research, communications, database organization, and team coordination.

ย

About Planet Reimagined:

Founded by a multi-platinum musician and a UN advocate, Planet Reimagined was built on the belief that big change happens when people act together and when that action drives shifts in policy and industry. On a mission to deliver fair solutions for people and the planet, we use an innovative action research method to incubate and scale creative solutions to our most pressing climate problems. We mobilize fans at concerts to take real-time civic action, and we help renewable energy companies access public lands once closed to them. From legislative wins to global campaigns, we turn bold ideas into action. And weโ€™re just getting started.

ย

About the Role:

Since hiring our first development staff and implementing core fundraising systems in January 2024, Planet Reimagined has seen extraordinary fundraising growth, quadrupling grant revenue in just 18 months. It reflects not only the urgency of our mission, but also the trust weโ€™ve earned from catalytic institutional and corporate funders.ย In January 2026, we welcomed our Individual Philanthropy Lead, to design and implement an individual fundraising program. The Philanthropy Associate is a new position that will play a central supporting role to realize our vision of a fully developed, strategic fundraising program. We are seeking a process-oriented, organized, flexible, and driven individual to conduct research, contribute to donor materials, maintain database records and reports, and organize the growing development needs of the organization.ย

ย

Duties and responsibilities include:

Reporting to the Institutional and Individual Philanthropy Leads, and working closely with Operations and Finance staff, the Philanthropy Associate will:

ย
  • Serve as a database specialist: refining and implementing database development. Manage donor data, gift entry, acknowledgements, and reporting
  • Conduct and organize donor and prospect research
  • Support team functioning with administrative and organizational needs such as scheduling and coordinating meetings, managing agendas and notes, tracking action itemsย
  • Support the Philanthropy Leads in developing and maintaining comprehensive grants and donor calendars
  • Support donor events
  • Develop and document department Standard Operating Procedures
  • Manage centralization and storage of documents, communications, and data
  • Develop and contribute to donor communication materials, advising on design, messaging, and positioning
  • Contribute toward healthy and collaborative work culture in an organization committed to a high degree of collegiality and shared purpose and navigating diverging views productively and respectfully
ย

Required Skills and Experience:

  • 3+ years of nonprofit development experience
  • Adaptable, tech-savvy, and highly organized. Eagerness to explore new methodologies and systems in a fast-growing, fast-paced, entrepreneurial organization
  • Database administration experience (Salesforce highly preferred) in gift processing, record keeping, and reporting
  • Curiosity-driven approach to prospect research, with eagerness to identify and analyze funding opportunities
  • Excellent writing, proofreading, and communication skills
  • Familiarity with communication and marketing tools such as Canva, Mailchimp, etc.
ย

Desired Skills:

  • Passion for climate work and/or advocacy
  • Experience using wealth screening tools and other research tools, such as Wealth-X, RelSci, etc.
  • Grant and/or proposal writing; grant vetting and research
ย

Details:

  • Full-Time, 40 hours per week
  • Salary Range: $70,000-90,000; or market-equivalent compensation in countries outside of the U.S.

The final offer will consider factors such as the candidate's location and cost of living as well as experience level.ย

  • We take a location-aware approach to compensation to ensure fairness and competitiveness across markets. For example, within the U.S., this range aligns with typical salaries for similar roles in major markets such as New York or Seattle (generally $80Kโ€“$90K) and mid-cost regions such as Dallas or Charlotte (typically $70Kโ€“$80K).
  • For candidates based outside the U.S., we benchmark compensation to local nonprofit and philanthropy markets. Illustrative equivalents for comparable roles include approximately ยฃ44Kโ€“ยฃ51K in the UK, โ‚น1.9Mโ€“โ‚น2.2M in India, and COP 103Mโ€“118M in Colombia.
  • This role is fully remote, but must be available to work US EST hours with additional flexibilityย
