Remote Proofreading information

What is remote proofreading?

Remote proofreading is the process of reviewing and correcting written documents for errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation, and formatting, while working from a location outside of a traditional office environment. Remote proofreaders use digital tools to edit content for businesses, publishers, authors, and other clients. This job offers flexibility, allowing professionals to work from home or anywhere with internet access. It requires strong attention to detail, excellent language skills, and the ability to meet deadlines. Remote proofreading can be done on a freelance, part-time, or full-time basis.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote proofreader?

To thrive as a Remote Proofreader, you need excellent command of grammar, spelling, and punctuation, often supported by a degree in English, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with editing software like Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and style guides such as AP or Chicago Manual of Style is typical. Attention to detail, time management, and strong written communication are crucial soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure high-quality, error-free documents and efficient collaboration with clients or editorial teams in a remote environment.

What are some common challenges faced by remote proofreaders, and how can they be managed effectively?

Remote proofreaders often encounter challenges such as maintaining focus over extended periods, meeting tight deadlines, and navigating varying client expectations. Working remotely requires strong self-discipline and excellent time management skills to ensure thorough, error-free work without supervision. To overcome these challenges, it's helpful to establish a dedicated, distraction-free workspace, set clear daily goals, and communicate proactively with clients or team members to clarify requirements. Staying updated on style guides and using digital proofreading tools can also improve efficiency and accuracy.

What is the difference between Remote Proofreading vs Remote Copy Editing?

AspectRemote ProofreadingRemote Copy Editing

Work EnvironmentIndependent, often freelance or remoteSimilar remote setup, may involve collaboration with writers or publishers
Industry UsageUsed across publishing, academic, and business sectorsCommon in publishing, marketing, and content creation
Search/Comparison IntentPeople compare to understand scope and skillsOften compared to proofreading for clarity on editing depth

Remote proofreading focuses on identifying and correcting grammatical, spelling, and punctuation errors, ensuring text accuracy. Remote copy editing involves deeper revisions, including style, tone, and structure improvements. While both roles require strong language skills and often similar credentials, copy editing typically demands a more comprehensive editing process. Both jobs are performed remotely and are common in publishing and content industries, but they serve different stages of the editing process.

Are remote proofreading jobs legit?

Remote proofreading jobs are legitimate opportunities that involve reviewing and correcting written content from home. However, job seekers should verify the employer's credibility, avoid scams that ask for upfront payments, and ensure the role aligns with industry standards for skills and tools such as style guides and editing software.

How do I become a remote proofreader?

To become a remote proofreader, you should develop strong language and grammar skills, often through a relevant degree or certification. Gaining experience with editing tools and building a portfolio can improve job prospects, and many remote proofreaders work independently or through freelance platforms. Consistent attention to detail and good time management are essential for success in this role.

Is there a demand for remote proofreaders?

Remote proofreaders are in steady demand as many companies and publishers seek online editing and proofreading services. The role often requires strong language skills, attention to detail, and familiarity with editing tools, making it a viable remote job option with flexible schedules.

Job description

About the Organization

An established Albuquerque-based nonprofit organization that is dedicated to creating stable, welcoming, and affordable multifamily communities where residents can thrive. In addition to providing quality housing, the organization supports residents through enrichment services such as food assistance, tutoring, fitness and wellness programs, and computer and financial literacy education.

The organization is seeking an experienced communications professional to advance its mission through clear, accurate, and compelling written communications. This position offers the opportunity to support affordable housing development while strengthening how the organization communicates with the broader community.

Position Summary

The Communications Specialist will lead written communications across external channels. This position will develop grant and funding narratives, website and social media content, reports, newsletters, press materials, and other written resources.

The Communications Specialist will also improve communication workflows, maintain consistent messaging, and provide communications and administrative support for affordable housing development and other organizational priorities. While this is a writing-focused position, it also includes event coordination and introductory outreach primarily related to scheduling and logistics.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop clear, accurate, and compelling content for external audiences, including website copy, social media posts, newsletters, brochures, annual reports, presentations, award submissions, press releases, and organizational updates.
  • Support affordable housing development and funding efforts by drafting, editing, and coordinating narratives and supporting materials for grants, Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) applications, and other submissions.
  • Collaborate with leadership and subject-matter experts to translate technical, operational, and housing-related information into accessible materials for funders, residents, partners, public officials, and community audiences.
  • Maintain consistent branding, voice, messaging, and factual accuracy across communications materials.
  • Develop written materials for organizational events and ribbon-cutting ceremonies, including invitations, announcements, and related communications.
  • Assist with event coordination and conduct introductory outreach to support scheduling and logistics.
  • Coordinate written responses and supporting materials for media, stakeholder, resident, and partner inquiries in consultation with the supervisor.
  • Review communications performance and recommend improvements based on organizational goals, audience needs, and channel effectiveness.
  • Provide administrative, research, editing, proofreading, and project support for communications initiatives and other organizational priorities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Exceptional writing, editing, proofreading, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to adapt content and tone for different audiences and purposes.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop persuasive narratives for grants, LIHTC or other funding applications, technical documents, reports, or professional communications.
  • Strong research skills and the ability to synthesize complex information, identify key messages, and maintain accuracy across multiple sources.
  • Experience developing content for websites, social media, newsletters, public relations, executive communications, or nonprofit publications.
  • Strong organizational and project-management skills, attention to detail, and the ability to independently manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a remote work environment.
  • Sound judgment and discretion when handling confidential, sensitive, or leadership-level information.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, shared digital workspaces, website content-management systems, social media platforms, and design tools such as Adobe Creative Suite or Canva.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with staff, leadership, Board members, consultants, and subject-matter experts without direct supervisory authority.
  • Candidates will be asked to provide two to three writing samples during the recruitment process.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, English, marketing, nonprofit management, or a related field. An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered.
  • Three or more years of professional experience in communications, writing, editing, public relations, marketing, grant writing, or nonprofit communications.
  • Experience with affordable housing, community development, LIHTC applications, grants, or other detailed funding submissions is strongly preferred.
