Job description

Washtenaw County Road Commission (WCRC) is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Project Engineer (internal classification: Project Manager). In this role you would serve as a project manager for the design and construction of safe and efficient road, bridge and drainage projects. This professional staff position has the responsibility for planning and managing projects and will include both administrative and technical oversight. The position must exercise independent professional judgment in resolving problems within project goals, objectives, and budget.

Schedule

  • Normal schedule: Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • Summer schedule: Option to work 4/10 or 5/8 work schedule.
  • Telecommuting, subject to WCRC's Telecommuting Policy, is an option for this position; however, remote work may not be available until training and onboarding are complete.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Project planning & design: Participate in planning and administration for transportation infrastructure projects; apply guidelines, regulations, and engineering judgment.
  • Field reviews & analysis: Conduct field reviews; collect and analyze project data; perform traffic engineering and impact studies; recommend solutions to project challenges.
  • Project management: Develop schedules based on funding and asset management practices; monitor progress and budget; generate reports, permits, and documentation.
  • Bidding & contract support: Review plans/specs/shop drawings and permit submittals; coordinate advertisement, letting, and bid evaluations; develop special provisions and supplemental specs.
  • Technical tools & standards: Use CAD and related software for design and assigned engineering tasks; coordinate material testing per specifications.
  • Coordination with stakeholders: Manage utility relocations (mapping, conflict resolution, schedule alignment); coordinate geotechnical information during design/construction; develop detour and temporary road closure plans.
  • Public & partner engagement: Represent WCRC at public meetings and with local officials to communicate project plans and foster collaborative relationships; respond promptly to citizen inquiries.
  • Team collaboration & oversight: Coordinate with Engineering and Operations; assign tasks to technicians/interns and monitor performance.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering, construction management, land surveying, or related degree.
  • Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam preferred; State of Michigan Professional Engineer (PE) licensure is a plus.
