Overview

The Engineering Project Estimator is responsible for developing, reviewing, and optimizing technical project estimates and customer proposals for electrical power system engineering, testing, commissioning, and maintenance projects. This role partners closely with Sales, Engineering, Operations, and Project Management to ensure project scopes are technically sound, commercially competitive, and aligned with Shermco's quality, safety, and profitability objectives.

The Engineering Project Estimator combines technical expertise with strong analytical and commercial skills to evaluate project requirements, identify risks, develop accurate cost estimates, and support successful project execution from proposal development through project handoff. This position plays a key role in supporting consistency, margin performance, and customer satisfaction across a wide range of electrical infrastructure projects.

Onsite in Irving Texas, remote 2 days a week. 

Responsibilities

Estimating and Proposal Development

  • Analyze project specifications, one-line diagrams, engineering drawings, RFQs, and customer requirements to develop comprehensive project estimates and proposals.
  • Prepare detailed labor, material, equipment, subcontractor, travel, logistics, and vendor cost calculations.
  • Develop technical and commercial proposals that accurately reflect project scope, assumptions, exclusions, and deliverables.
  • Obtain and evaluate supplier and subcontractor quotations to support estimate development.
  • Support change order development and pricing for additional project scope when required.
  • Manage assigned quote opportunities to meet customer deadlines and departmental performance objectives

Technical Review and Scope Development

  • Review and validate project scopes to ensure technical accuracy and alignment with customer requirements.
  • Collaborate with engineering, operations, and field service teams to optimize project execution approaches and resource planning.
  • Evaluate complex electrical power system projects involving testing, commissioning, engineering studies, transformers, switchgear, breakers, relays, and related electrical equipment.
  • Provide technical guidance regarding industry standards, testing methodologies, safety requirements, and project execution strategies.
  • Participate in technical reviews of complex or high-value opportunities and assist in identifying project risks and mitigation plans.

Cost Management and Margin Optimization

  • Analyze project costs and pricing strategies to maintain competitiveness while achieving targeted profitability objectives.
  • Use historical project performance data and lessons learned to improve estimate accuracy.
  • Review cost assumptions and labor requirements to support consistency and proper project budgeting.
  • Assist in evaluating quote-to-actual variances and identifying opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Support pricing governance and approval processes for projects meeting established review thresholds.

Risk Assessment and Compliance

  • Identify technical, operational, commercial, and execution risks during the estimating process.
  • Verify compliance with applicable industry standards, including NETA, OSHA, NEC, IEC, customer specifications, and company requirements.
  • Ensure estimates and proposals accurately document assumptions, exclusions, and project constraints.
  • Support internal quality systems and documentation requirements associated with estimating and project handoff processes.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with Sales, Engineering, Operations, Field Services, and Project Management teams to develop project strategies.
  • Coordinate with technical personnel to validate labor requirements, execution plans, and project assumptions.
  • Participate in customer discussions, site visits, scoping meetings, and project reviews as required.
  • Support successful project transitions through effective communication and documentation of estimate assumptions and scope details.

Process Improvement and Mentorship 

  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of estimating tools, workflows, proposal templates, and business processes.
  • Support implementation and testing of new technologies, digital solutions, and estimating systems.
  • Assist with onboarding, training, and mentoring estimators and other team members.
  • Share technical knowledge and lessons learned to improve organizational estimating capabilities.
  • Participate in process optimization initiatives that improve efficiency, consistency, and estimate quality.
Qualifications

Education: 

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or a related technical discipline preferred. NETA, PMP, PE, NICET, or other industry-recognized certifications are considered a plus.

Experience: 

  • Experience in electrical estimating, project engineering, electrical testing, commissioning, field services, power systems engineering, or a related industry. Experience preparing customer proposals and detailed project cost estimates is preferred.

Technical Knowledge: 

  • Strong understanding of low-, medium-, and high-voltage electrical power systems. Ability to read and interpret one-line diagrams, specifications, plans, and technical documentation. Familiarity with electrical testing, commissioning, maintenance, and engineering services.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities. Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines. Strong understanding of cost analysis, profitability drivers, and financial measurements. 

Software Proficiency:

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, Adobe, Bluebeam, Salesforce, and other estimating or project management software.
