What is a remote product owner?

A Remote Product Owner is a professional responsible for defining, prioritizing, and overseeing the development of a product, but works from a location outside of the traditional office setting. They act as a key liaison between stakeholders and development teams, ensuring the product vision is clearly communicated and executed. Remote Product Owners use digital tools to manage backlogs, set priorities, and facilitate collaboration with distributed teams. Their role is essential in agile environments, especially for companies embracing remote or hybrid work models.

What does a remote product owner do?

As a remote product owner, you work from home to coordinate the development of software using the Agile/Scrum method. Your duties are to plan the timeline, assign workers different tasks, and evaluate the process at every step. You have significant managerial responsibilities, including checking in with programmers and developers daily to assess their progress and coordinating with the QA testers, as well as product managers, to harmonize efforts and ensure that the project meets the expectations of investors, clients, and users. As a remote product owner, you do most of your work via email, text, chat apps, or video conference.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote product owner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Product Owner, you need a solid understanding of product management, agile methodologies, and requirements gathering, often supported by a background in business, IT, or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Jira, Confluence, and product roadmapping software, as well as certifications such as CSPO (Certified Scrum Product Owner), is highly valuable. Strong communication, stakeholder management, and decision-making skills are essential for aligning distributed teams and driving product vision remotely. These competencies ensure effective collaboration, clear prioritization, and successful product outcomes in a virtual environment.

How does a remote product owner effectively collaborate with distributed teams to ensure project alignment?

As a Remote Product Owner, effective collaboration often relies on clear communication and the use of digital tools like Jira, Trello, and Slack to bridge the distance between team members. Regular virtual meetings, such as daily stand-ups and sprint reviews, help maintain alignment on priorities and progress. Building strong relationships with development, design, and business teams is essential, so proactive outreach and transparent documentation are key. Navigating time zone differences and fostering team engagement can be challenging, but setting expectations and creating shared goals help overcome these hurdles.

Product Owner (US Remote)

Oomnitza

Job description

Oomnitza offers the industry's most versatile Enterprise Technology Management platform that orchestrates and automates key business processes for IT. Our SaaS solution, with agentless integrations, best practices and low-code workflows, enables enterprises to leverage their existing infrastructure systems and automate processes such as offboarding, onboarding, audit readiness, refresh forecasting and more, thereby reducing reliance on error-prone manual tasks and tickets. We help some of the most well-known and innovative companies to improve efficiency, expedite audits, mitigate cyber risk and eliminate redundant IT spend.
Oomnitza is hiring a Product Owner to drive throughput on our engineering teams. The role is tactical and focused: organize and prioritize the backlog, identify blockers, and get them resolved with minimal disruption to the team.
You sit alongside the engineering team and act as the central clearing house for incoming work: strategic priorities from Product Engineering, customer escalations from Support and Customer Success, engineering-identified technical debt, and deferred bugs. You keep the team's plate full of the right work, in the right order. You also run the team's engineering ceremonies, but ceremonies are a means, not the goal. The goal is throughput.
What You'll Do
  • Own the engineering team backlog. Maintain it in a prioritized, ready-to-work state with the right mix of strategic features, customer escalations, technical debt, and bug fixes.
  • Prioritize across product strategic priorities, customer escalations, and engineering-identified technical debt. Make the tradeoffs explicit.
  • Identify blockers early (technical, organizational, cross-team, or strategic) and escalate to the right owner to unblock the team with minimal impact to delivery.
  • Run engineering ceremonies: daily stand-up, backlog grooming, sprint planning, and retrospectives. Use them as instruments to surface issues and manage flow.
  • Partner with Product Engineers to translate validated solutions into well-formed user stories, acceptance criteria, and a sequenced delivery plan.
  • Partner with Customer Success and Support to triage customer escalations, scope the real problem, and slot the work appropriately.
  • Set realistic delivery expectations and provide regular, honest updates on what is shipping, what is at risk, and why.
  • Maintain a trust-based relationship with the engineering team. You are their advocate for clarity, focus, and protection from churn.

What We're Looking For
  • Bachelor's degree in business, computer science, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years as a Product Owner, Scrum Master, or Technical Program Manager in an agile B2B SaaS environment.
  • Strong knowledge of agile and scrum methodologies, and the practical experience to know when to follow the playbook and when to deviate from it.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize across competing inputs (strategic, customer, technical) and defend those priorities with clear reasoning.
  • Sharp instincts for spotting blockers and the communication skills to escalate them without creating drama.
  • Technical literacy. You can read an API spec, follow an architecture conversation, and reason about engineering tradeoffs well enough to make calls on the backlog.
  • Strong written and verbal communication. You are a clarifier, not a confuser.
  • Detail-oriented and structured. You hold a complex backlog in your head and still keep the team's next two weeks crisp.
  • Collaborative, low-ego team player. You measure success by the team's throughput.
  • SaaS platform and API integration experience is required. IT Asset Management, ITSM, or adjacent enterprise IT experience is a strong plus.

What We Can Offer You
  • Career Growth: Top performers will have an opportunity to help shape the team. Working directly with the founders to drive initiatives and create a structure that scales
  • Market-competitive salary + equity
  • A once-in-a-lifetime career opportunity to get onboard a fast-growing business that is venture-backed by Shasta Ventures, SYN Ventures and Riverside Acceleration Capital

The base salary range for this position is: $120,000-165,000
Oomnitza recruits, employs, trains, compensates and promotes regardless of race, religion, color, national origin, sex, disability, age, veteran status, and other protected status as required by applicable law.
