What is a remote product manager?

Remote product managers are professionals who oversee the development and lifecycle of products while working outside a traditional office setting, often from home or other remote locations. They collaborate with cross-functional teams, set product strategies, gather requirements, and ensure products meet market needs—all through virtual communication tools. Remote product managers must excel at digital collaboration, communication, and project management to keep teams aligned and projects on track. This role has become increasingly popular as companies embrace distributed workforces and global talent.

What does a remote product manager do?

Remote product managers are responsible for analyzing product trends, forecasting demand, and implementing the release of new products for your company. Instead of working in the office, remote product managers complete their job duties from home or another location outside of the office. As a remote product manager, your responsibilities may include assessing current market trends and consumer needs to determine where new market niches are emerging and how your company’s existing products fit in those markets. You also oversee the team that develops and implements the release of new technology products to fill these niches. Many remote product managers have sales or marketing backgrounds; this experience provides valuable insight into consumer trends and satisfying customer needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote product manager?

To thrive as a Remote Product Manager, you need a strong background in product lifecycle management, market research, and strategic planning, typically supported by a degree in business, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with agile project management tools like Jira, Trello, and product analytics platforms such as Mixpanel or Google Analytics is essential. Outstanding communication, self-motivation, and cross-functional collaboration skills help remote product managers stand out. These competencies ensure successful product delivery, alignment across distributed teams, and the ability to adapt quickly to shifting priorities in a remote environment.

How does a remote product manager typically coordinate with cross-functional teams to ensure product success?

As a remote Product Manager, you'll frequently collaborate with engineering, design, marketing, and sales teams across different locations and time zones. Effective coordination relies on clear communication, regular virtual meetings, and the use of collaboration tools like Slack, Jira, and Zoom. You'll often set and track goals, facilitate progress updates, and resolve blockers proactively. Building strong relationships and fostering transparency are essential to maintain alignment and keep projects on track while working remotely.

Job description

Clio is the global leader in legal AI technology, empowering legal professionals and law firms of every size to work smarter, faster, and more securely.

We are transforming the legal experience for all by bettering the lives of legal professionals while increasing access to justice.

Summary:

Clio is the global leader in legal AI technology, empowering legal professionals and law firms of every size to work smarter, faster, and more securely. Vincent is the AI engine at the center of that mission, and the quality, breadth, and trustworthiness of the legal content and case-law signal it draws on is what separates a genuinely useful legal AI from a plausible-sounding one.

We're looking for a Senior Product Manager to own two connected problems: how fast and how well Vincent's content library expands into new jurisdictions, and how Vincent understands the relationships between legal cases, what's still good law, what's been overruled, what a court's actually relied on.

This is a build-from-scratch problem space with real ambiguity, a fast-moving competitive bar, and a mandate to move quickly without cutting corners on legal trust. This role can be worked from remote US or Remote Canada, or twice per week from our HUB offices (Vancouver, NYC, Toronto, Calgary or London).

What You'll Work On

Own Vincent's Legal Content Strategy: Set and evolve the quality bar for what "gold standard" content coverage means jurisdiction by jurisdiction, and drive the roadmap for expanding coverage rapidly, including new sourcing approaches (AI-driven content sourcing and indexing across multiple content modalities) that let Clio bring on jurisdictions and content sources much faster than before, while still meeting a bar we're proud to stand behind.

Reimagine the Citator for an AI Consumer: Design what we're calling "Certification," the signal layer that tells Vincent (and, through it, the lawyer) how cases relate to one another: what's been overruled, what's still good law, what's been relied on and why. You'll define what needs to be pre-labeled, how granular the signal needs to be, and how it should be structured to actually improve what Vincent tells a lawyer.

Drive Product Strategy End-to-End: Develop a roadmap for your area in conjunction with your Director and peers, build the business case for where to invest, and be willing to pivot as new information comes to light. Ship and launch features end-to-end in close partnership with Engineering, Design, and legal SMEs.

Ramp Fast, Not Locally: You won't need jurisdiction-specific legal expertise, Clio's country managers and local legal experts own that depth and will support you directly. What you do need is enough legal fluency to move fast on this problem, ask the right questions, and get up to speed on the specifics within weeks, not months.

What You Bring

Real Legal Fluency: This role requires more hands-on legal substance than a typical Clio PM role. You should understand, or be able to quickly and confidently get to grips with, what a citator is, why case relationships (overruling, following, distinguishing) matter, and how citation has historically worked as a compression mechanism that let lawyers avoid reading every underlying case. A background as a practicing lawyer, legal researcher, or in legal tech is a strong asset.

AI Product Experience: Proven experience building or managing AI-driven products, with a strong point of view on how AI changes what a "signal" or "trust layer" needs to look like versus how it worked for a human-only audience.

Product Management Acumen: At least 6 years of product management experience in a SaaS or B2B software environment, with a track record of owning and shipping mission-critical products at scale.

Comfort with Ambiguity: This space is being defined in real time. You're someone who can form a strong, well-reasoned point of view quickly, act on it, and adjust as new information comes in, rather than waiting for the problem to be fully scoped for you.

Fast, Independent Learner: You pick up new, complex domains quickly and form your own opinionated take rather than needing everything spelled out. You'll ramp with the existing team but should be self-directed from early on.

Strategic & Data-Driven Thinking: You use both qualitative and quantitative input to drive product strategy, define requirements, and measure impact, and you're comfortable making decisions under uncertainty.

Strong Communicator: You work effectively across Product, Design, Engineering, and legal SME stakeholders, with the humility to seek input and the conviction to make a call.

Product at Clio

Our market opportunity is rare in its scale and powered by a strong business model, Silicon Valley-based investors and advisors, and a product management team that is global and world-class. Clio is growing rapidly, with massive growth opportunities for Product Managers. We've worked hard to build an excellent product management culture with empowered PMs who are highly regarded and influential across the organization. Clio invests heavily in developing Product Managers, growing leaders, and the broader Product communities we operate in.
