Remote Product Design involves creating comprehensive product solutions, including UI, UX, and product strategy, often working closely with cross-functional teams. Remote UX Design primarily focuses on user experience, research, and usability testing. While both roles require design skills and collaboration, Product Designers have a broader scope that includes product strategy, whereas UX Designers concentrate on optimizing user interactions.

How do remote product designers effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams?

Remote product designers typically use a combination of digital collaboration tools, such as Figma, Slack, and Zoom, to work closely with developers, product managers, and other stakeholders. Regular virtual meetings, clear documentation, and shared design systems help ensure everyone stays aligned on goals and project progress. Building strong communication habits and proactively seeking feedback are key to overcoming the challenges of distance and time zones in a remote setup. This collaborative approach fosters a sense of teamwork and helps remote designers contribute effectively to the product development process.

What is remote product design?

Remote product design is the process of creating and developing new products or improving existing ones while working from a location outside of a traditional office setting. Designers collaborate virtually using digital tools to ideate, prototype, test, and iterate on product concepts. This approach allows teams to work together from different geographic locations, often improving flexibility and access to diverse talent. Remote product designers typically use communication platforms, cloud-based design software, and project management tools to facilitate their workflow.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Product Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Product Designer, you need expertise in UX/UI principles, a strong portfolio, and proficiency in design thinking and user research, typically supported by a degree in design or related field. Familiarity with tools like Figma, Sketch, Adobe Creative Suite, and collaboration platforms such as Miro or Slack is crucial. Exceptional communication, time management, and problem-solving skills help you stand out in remote, cross-functional teams. These abilities enable the creation of user-centered products while maintaining efficient collaboration and productivity from a distance.

Summary:

We are seeking a Senior Product Manager, Selection & Merchandising to own the systems and operational tools that support category expansion, merchandise operations, and GMV growth across all category verticals. This role will be responsible for defining and delivering the product strategy and roadmap that enable our merchandising and category teams to scale effectively and make smarter, data-driven decisions.

The ideal candidate combines strong product management fundamentals with deep business acumen in merchandising, category management, assortment, pricing, and e-commerce operations. You are comfortable working cross-functionally, influencing stakeholders, and building systems from concept through launch and optimization.

Important:
This is a Product Management role, not a Buyer, Purchasing, Category Manager, or Merchandise Planner position. The primary responsibility is to build and optimize internal systems, tools, workflows, and product capabilities that enable merchandising and category teams to operate more effectively. While understanding merchandising, assortment, pricing, and category management is important, this role focuses on product strategy, system design, roadmap execution, and cross-functional delivery rather than direct vendor negotiations, purchasing, or inventory buying activities.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Own the product vision, strategy, roadmap, and execution for systems and tools supporting category growth, merchandising operations, and GMV expansion across all category verticals.
  • Work backward from category growth strategy and business goals to define product priorities and measurable outcomes.
  • Drive improvements in:
    • Category coverage and selection depth
    • New SKU onboarding and performance
    • Conversion and customer engagement
    • Pricing competitiveness and margin optimization
    • SKU profitability and overall category profitability
  • Partner closely with Category Growth, Merchandising, Marketing, Finance, Engineering, Analytics, UX Design, and Supply Chain teams to identify business needs and translate them into scalable product solutions.
  • Lead the design and development of end-to-end capabilities and internal tools across:
    • Category planning and performance analytics
    • Selection and assortment optimization
    • Pricing strategy and automated pricing tools
    • Campaign planning and management
    • Product lifecycle management
    • Merchandising and category performance dashboards
    • Content quality management and enrichment
    • Workflow and process automation
  • Gather and prioritize requirements, define user stories and success metrics, and manage the product backlog.
  • Create business cases, evaluate tradeoffs, and align stakeholders around product priorities and roadmap decisions.
  • Work closely with Engineering and Design teams throughout the full product lifecycle, from ideation and requirements to launch, adoption, and continuous improvement.
  • Establish clear KPIs and reporting mechanisms to measure product impact and ensure visibility into performance and execution.
  • Drive operational excellence through strong project management, ownership, communication, and follow-through.

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years of product management experience delivering scaled systems and tooling in e-commerce, retail, marketplace, or merchandising environments.
  • Deep understanding of category and merchandising management concepts, including assortment planning, product lifecycle management, pricing strategies, promotional mechanics, and conversion optimization.
  • Knowledge of key category and merchandising metrics, including GMV, sell-through rate, category contribution margin, average order value, conversion rate, and pricing index.
  • Strong analytical and structured problem solving: root-cause analysis, clear problem framing, success metrics definition, and translation of insights into system capabilities and operational mechanisms.
  • Experience influencing multiple stakeholders and driving alignment and decisions
  • Leadership experience in distributed or remote engineering teams, driving execution across time zones and geographies.
  • Bilingual written and verbal communication skills in Chinese and English.
  • Ability to utilize AI to increase job productivity and efficiency

Preferred Qualifications

• Hands-on experience building or scaling catalog management, merchandising, or pricing systems.

• Experience with automated pricing engines, dynamic pricing algorithms, or competitive pricing tools.

• Demonstrated ability to navigate ambiguity effectively and identify structural improvements.

• Strong engineering and design judgment: able to partner with Engineering to make sound technical trade-offs and collaborate with UX Design to deliver high-quality user experiences.

• Track record of building automated and self-service solutions that reduce manual work and improve operational efficiency.

• Strong data fluency with SQL and common analytics/BI tools.

• People management experience.
