Remote Process Safety information

What is a Remote Process Safety professional?

A Remote Process Safety professional is an expert who works primarily online or off-site to identify, assess, and mitigate risks associated with industrial processes, ensuring the safety of people, property, and the environment. They focus on evaluating and managing hazards related to chemicals, equipment, and operations from a distance, often using digital tools and remote monitoring systems. Their work includes reviewing safety protocols, conducting risk assessments, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations—all while collaborating virtually with onsite teams.

What is the difference between Remote Process Safety vs Remote Process Engineer?

AspectRemote Process SafetyRemote Process Engineer
Required CredentialsCertifications in safety management, OSHA, or process safety standardsEngineering degrees, PE license, process design certifications
Work EnvironmentFocus on safety protocols, risk assessments, complianceDesign, optimize, and troubleshoot process systems
Employer & Industry UsageOil & gas, chemical manufacturing, energy sectorsRefining, chemical plants, manufacturing facilities

Remote Process Safety specialists primarily focus on safety protocols, risk assessments, and regulatory compliance within industrial environments. In contrast, Remote Process Engineers concentrate on designing and improving process systems. While both roles require technical knowledge, Remote Process Safety emphasizes safety standards and hazard mitigation, whereas Remote Process Engineers focus on process efficiency and engineering design.

How does a Remote Process Safety professional effectively collaborate with on-site teams to ensure compliance and safety standards are maintained?

Remote Process Safety professionals often leverage digital tools, such as video conferencing and real-time monitoring software, to communicate regularly with on-site teams. They review process data, incident reports, and maintenance records remotely, providing guidance and recommendations to ensure safety standards are upheld. Success in this role typically requires strong communication skills and the ability to interpret complex data from afar, as well as building trust with on-site staff to facilitate transparent information sharing. Frequent virtual meetings and occasional site visits (when possible) help maintain alignment and address emerging safety concerns promptly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Process Safety Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Process Safety Engineer, you need a solid background in chemical or process engineering, risk assessment, and regulatory compliance, usually supported by a relevant engineering degree and experience in process industries. Familiarity with tools such as HAZOP, LOPA, PHA software, and safety management systems, as well as certifications like CSP or CCPSC, is common. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective remote communication are standout soft skills for this role. These competencies are crucial for identifying risks, ensuring compliance, and maintaining safety in complex process operations from a remote setting.

Job description

Are you interested in being part of an innovative team that supports Westinghouse's mission to provide clean energy solutions? At Westinghouse, we recognize that our employees are our most valuable asset and we seek to identify, attract and recruit the most qualified talent while recognizing and encouraging the value of diversity in the global workplace.

As an FHE Field Service Technician, Level 3, you will help support our FHE Outage and Maintenance Services team. You will provide support for nuclear fuel handling equipment or outage critical cranes. The field service support will be conducted at remote operating nuclear power plants and at local service center operations, utilizing high technology service equipment in a manner reflecting Westinghouse's commitment to the highest levels of safety and quality.

You will report to the FHE Outage and Maintenance Supervisor. This is a remote role that can be performed from anywhere in the United States, but does require significant travel. Projects are 2-4 weeks but during Spring and Fall may be traveling 2 to 3 months at a time before going home to reset.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Install, set-up, maintain, inspect, calibrate, and troubleshoot fuel handling/outage critical crane equipment at customer sites worldwide.
  • Review operational procedures, maintenance procedures, and drawings in detail.
  • Provide support to engineering and training by performing activities such as equipment modifications, equipment setup and testing, mock-up preparation, process testing, and equipment and process qualifications. Accurately document equipment performance issues during field implementation, and ensure corrective actions are complete prior to next scheduled use.
  • Participate in training programs to acquire and maintain certifications as well as keep current with technology and procedures.
  • Perform all assigned tasks under general supervision, with a high degree of quality, and within the parameters of qualified procedures and guidelines.  Maintain a high level of attention to detail and document all quality related issues.
  • Practice a "Safety First" attitude as an integral part of all activities.  Demonstrate good housekeeping practices in work areas.  Maintain "Unescorted Access" status at nuclear power plant sites.
  • Develop, exercise and promote team-building skills with peers, supervisors, contractors, customers and other departments.  Demonstrate good customer sensitivity and customer service skills.  Develop and maintain a focus on creative problem solving.
  • Report to the service supervisor the status of field work progress, changes, problems, and/or mistakes on a daily or as need basis. This position requires extensive travel via airplane and/or automobile (60%-70%) and working with and around hazardous materials.

Qualifications:

  • High school graduate or the recognized equivalent plus 2 year, post high school degree/certificate or equivalent in experience. Specific knowledge and training in electrical, electronic, PLC, or mechanical components.
  • 2-5 years related experience where satisfactorily demonstrated evidence of mechanical, electrical and PLC aptitude and skill.  Nuclear industry experience is beneficial.
  • This position is subject to the requirements of Westinghouse and customer security, unescorted access, and fitness for duty programs.
  • Requires the ability to occasionally carry/lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Individual must possess full range of motion i.e. ability to reach, climb, kneel, squat, grasp, bend forwards and backwards, sit, and stand for a minimum 4 hours per day
  • Individual must be able to pass a Westinghouse physical which includes a spirometer for the ability to wear a respirator.

We are committed to transparency and equity in all of our people practices. The base salary range for this position, which is dependent upon experience, qualifications and skills, is estimated to be $74,941.84 to $98,759.22 per year.
