Research Scientist - AI for Power ElectronicsThe Opportunity

In this role, you will work at the intersection of power electronics and artificial intelligence, helping to shape next-generation technologies that support modern, reliable, and efficient power grids. As part of Hitachi Energy's global research organization, you will contribute to the development of AI-enabled software tools that improve how complex power electronics systems-such as HVDC, STATCOM, and SVC-are designed, optimized, and validated. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams of researchers, engineers, and software developers to transform real-world engineering challenges into scalable, data-driven solutions. Your work will focus on advancing design automation, improving accuracy and performance, and accelerating innovation across power conversion technologies. Through applied research, prototyping, and validation, you will directly influence how power electronics systems are engineered, impacting grid reliability, performance, and future energy system evolution. This role offers the opportunity to explore advanced computational approaches, contribute to industry-relevant research, and see your ideas translate into practical tools used across global energy applications. Role will be based onsite at our Research Center in Raleigh, NC.

  • Collaborate with global teams to develop AI-enabled software tools that enhance power electronics design workflows
  • Drive research in design automation using AI, optimization algorithms, and data-driven methods
  • Develop and validate AI-based approaches for design space exploration, performance prediction, and system optimization
  • Support component selection, reliability assessment, and scalability improvements for power electronic systems
  • Identify technology gaps and contribute to future-focused research priorities in power electronics design tools
  • Partner with engineering teams to translate design challenges into practical, user-focused software solutions
  • Work with external partners including universities, national labs, and industry collaborators to advance research initiatives
  • Share findings through scientific publications, technical reports, and patent applications
  • Responsible to ensure compliance with applicable external and internal regulations, procedures, and guidelines.
Your Background
  • Candidate must already have work authorization that would permit them to work for Hitachi Energy in the United States.
  • Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering with a focus on power electronics, energy conversion, or a closely related field, with educational background spanning both Power Electronics and Computer Science/AI
  • Experience in power electronics design, modeling, hardware systems, and simulation/verification of power electronic systems
  • Hands-on experience applying AI techniques such as supervised/unsupervised learning, optimization, surrogate modeling, or reinforcement learning to engineering problems
  • Proficiency in programming (Python or similar) and familiarity with machine learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow and scientific computing tools
  • Experience with tools such as Matlab, Simulink, PSCAD, PLECS, and familiarity with hardware design workflows and controller design techniques
  • Proven research background with publications in recognized journals or conferences and effective communication skills in English
