What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Pole Loading Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Pole Loading Designer, you need a solid understanding of structural engineering principles, utility pole design standards, and a relevant engineering or technical degree. Familiarity with pole loading analysis software (such as O-Calc Pro or SPIDAcalc), GIS tools, and industry-specific documentation is typically required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective remote communication skills help ensure accuracy and collaboration across distributed teams. These competencies are crucial for producing safe, code-compliant designs and facilitating seamless project execution in a virtual environment.

What are some common challenges faced by Remote Pole Loading Designers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Pole Loading Designers often encounter challenges such as coordinating with field teams to obtain accurate site data, managing multiple projects simultaneously, and ensuring compliance with local utility standards. Working remotely can make communication and data verification more complex, so effective collaboration tools and clear processes are essential. Staying organized and proactive in seeking clarification from field staff can help minimize errors and improve efficiency. Additionally, ongoing training in the latest design software and standards can help designers stay current and deliver high-quality work.

What is a Remote Pole Loading Designer?

A Remote Pole Loading Designer is a professional who evaluates the structural capacity of utility poles to ensure they can safely support electrical, telecommunications, or other utility equipment. Working remotely, they use specialized software and data such as pole measurements, equipment weights, and environmental factors to create pole loading analyses and design solutions. This role is crucial for maintaining safety standards and regulatory compliance in the installation and maintenance of overhead utility lines. Remote Pole Loading Designers often collaborate with engineers, field technicians, and utility companies to review existing infrastructure and plan upgrades or new installations.

What is the difference between Remote Pole Loading Designer vs Remote Transmission Line Designer?

Job description

ECI is highly motivated to attract electrical engineers that have significant experience performing EHV technical design studies.  We are looking for hands-on study engineers that can utilize any software to perform the analysis and write detailed reports.  The ideal candidate should have deep knowledge and experience in most of the following studies at the EHV level:

  •         Shunt Reactive Compensation and Voltage Control
  •          Coupled Line Resonance Studies (stuck pole on breakers drives NGR size on switched/fixed line connected shunt reactors to prevent resonance)
  •          Single Pole Automatic Reclosing (NGR sizing, reclose dead time determination, check stability margins, etc)
  •          Series Capacitor Analysis (develop cap size, MOV sizing, etc.)
  •          Line Switching Overvoltage Studies (with/without breaker PIRs and point on wave controllers, etc)
  •          Line Insulation Coordination Studies (includes assessing line clearances and make recommendations for PIRs, sub/line arresters, changes to clearances)
  •          Breaker TRV/RRRV Studies
  •          Line or Sub MAD calculations
  •          Coupling to Adjacent Circuits in ROW
  •          Voltage/Current Unbalance/Transposition Studies
  •          Transformer Energization
  •          TOV studies in HV/EHV systems
  •          EHV Capacitor Switching (analysis and TLI/PIR sizing)
  •          Technoeconomic Conductor Selection Studies
  •          EHV Power Cable Studies (EMT studies of riser design including grounding, cross-bonding, SVL sizing/placement, protection of cables)

The engineer will join a team of experienced engineers and perform detailed EMT analysis for the study work as well as provide guidance to younger staff who this individual will train. Extensive experience with PSCAD is required and knowledge of common loadflow tools, MathCad, Excel is a must.

Depending on experience, applicants may be qualified for a hybrid or remote work arrangement. Relocation to Madison, WI or Chesapeake, VA to work with the team is preferred.
