Remote Operational Technology Engineer information

How does a remote operational technology engineer typically collaborate with on-site teams to resolve technical issues?

Remote Operational Technology Engineers often work closely with on-site teams by leveraging digital communication tools such as video conferencing, remote desktop software, and real-time monitoring systems. They provide technical guidance, troubleshoot problems, and help implement solutions without being physically present. Building strong relationships with on-site staff and maintaining clear, timely communication are crucial, as remote engineers rely on accurate feedback and updates to diagnose and address operational technology challenges effectively.

What is the difference between Remote Operational Technology Engineer vs Remote Industrial Automation Technician?

AspectRemote Operational Technology EngineerRemote Industrial Automation Technician
CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering or related field, certifications like Cisco, CompTIATechnical diploma or associate degree, certifications in PLCs or SCADA systems
Work EnvironmentDesign, implement, and maintain OT systems remotely in industrial settingsInstall, troubleshoot, and repair automation equipment remotely or on-site
Industry UsageManufacturing, energy, utilities with focus on system integrationFactories, plants, and facilities managing automation hardware

The Remote Operational Technology Engineer focuses on designing and maintaining OT systems remotely, ensuring system security and integration. In contrast, the Remote Industrial Automation Technician primarily handles troubleshooting and repairing automation hardware remotely or on-site. Both roles require technical certifications and are vital in industrial sectors, but their core responsibilities differ in scope and focus.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote operational technology engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Operational Technology Engineer, you need a solid background in industrial control systems (ICS), networking, and cybersecurity, typically backed by an engineering degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with SCADA, PLC programming, remote monitoring tools, and relevant certifications like CISSP or ISA/IEC 62443 is common. Strong problem-solving, communication, and self-management skills set standout professionals apart, especially when collaborating remotely with diverse teams. These skills are crucial for maintaining secure, reliable, and efficient operations in complex industrial environments while working off-site.

What is a remote operational technology engineer?

A Remote Operational Technology (OT) Engineer is a professional who manages, monitors, and maintains industrial control systems and networks from a remote location. They ensure that critical infrastructure systems, such as those in manufacturing, energy, or utilities, operate efficiently and securely. Their responsibilities often include troubleshooting equipment issues, implementing cybersecurity measures, and supporting automation systems. This role is increasingly important as more organizations adopt remote monitoring and control solutions for their OT environments.

Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Distributed Systems Software Engineer based in Netherlands.

This role offers the opportunity to build and scale the distributed infrastructure powering global, data-intensive platforms.
The Senior Distributed Systems Software Engineer will design highly reliable backend systems focused on real-time data synchronization, streaming, and cloud-native architectures.
Working on complex engineering challenges, this position plays a key role in improving performance, scalability, and resilience across large-scale environments.
The successful candidate will influence architectural decisions, solve challenging infrastructure problems, and deliver solutions with direct customer impact.
This is a remote-first opportunity within a collaborative engineering environment that values autonomy, ownership, and technical excellence.
The role is ideal for an experienced engineer passionate about distributed systems, optimization, and building reliable platforms at scale.

Accountabilities

The Senior Distributed Systems Software Engineer will be responsible for designing, developing, and optimizing large-scale distributed systems that support real-time data movement and synchronization. The role requires strong technical ownership, problem-solving abilities, and collaboration with engineering and product teams to deliver scalable solutions that meet complex business and customer needs.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Design, implement, and maintain scalable, fault-tolerant backend services supporting real-time synchronization and streaming workflows.
  • Optimize systems for performance, including latency, throughput, reliability, and operational efficiency.
  • Drive architectural decisions related to multi-region deployments, disaster recovery strategies, and global data residency requirements.
  • Build and improve cloud-native infrastructure supporting high-volume data processing and distributed applications.
  • Own projects from initial design through production delivery, including requirements gathering, implementation, testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Collaborate with engineering and product stakeholders to develop practical solutions aligned with user needs and business objectives.
  • Analyze system bottlenecks and implement improvements through experimentation, monitoring, and performance optimization.
  • Enhance platform automation, observability, incident response processes, and operational reliability.
  • Contribute technical expertise and guidance to improve engineering practices and system architecture.
Requirements

The ideal candidate will have strong experience building and operating high-performance distributed systems, with expertise in backend engineering, cloud infrastructure, and large-scale data platforms. This role requires a technically skilled professional who can work independently, communicate effectively, and solve complex engineering challenges in a fast-paced environment.

Required qualifications and skills include:

  • Proven experience designing, building, scaling, and troubleshooting distributed systems and backend infrastructure.
  • Experience developing data synchronization platforms, event streaming systems, or large-scale data movement solutions.
  • Strong understanding of event-driven architectures, real-time APIs, and cloud-native deployment patterns.
  • Experience working across major cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
  • Proficiency in at least one backend programming language such as Go, Python, or Java.
  • Familiarity with SQL and database technologies used in large-scale production environments.
  • Strong knowledge of system optimization techniques, including performance analysis, scalability improvements, and reliability engineering.
  • Experience with messaging systems, distributed data processing, and modern infrastructure practices.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong ownership mindset with the ability to manage projects independently and deliver high-impact outcomes.
  • Experience supporting rapidly growing products, platforms, or services is highly valued.
Benefits

The position provides the opportunity to work on impactful distributed systems projects while benefiting from a flexible and highly autonomous work environment.

Benefits include:

  • Fully remote work flexibility.
  • Competitive compensation ranging from $190,000 to $300,000 USD base salary, plus additional perks.
  • Meaningful equity opportunities in a growing technology platform.
  • Direct ownership of projects impacting global customers.
  • Opportunity to collaborate with highly skilled engineering professionals.
  • Remote-first culture focused on outcomes, innovation, and technical impact.
  • Exposure to complex distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, and large-scale data challenges.
