Remote Open Source Developer information

What is a Remote Open Source Developer?

A Remote Open Source Developer is a software engineer who contributes to open source projects while working from a location outside of a traditional office. These developers collaborate with distributed teams, often using online platforms like GitHub or GitLab to share code and track issues. Their work involves writing, testing, and documenting code, as well as reviewing contributions from others. Remote Open Source Developers may be volunteers or paid contributors, and they typically engage with a global community to improve and maintain open source software.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Open Source Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Open Source Developer, you need strong programming skills (often in languages like Python, JavaScript, or C++), familiarity with open source workflows, and a solid understanding of version control systems like Git. Experience with collaborative platforms such as GitHub or GitLab, and familiarity with continuous integration (CI) tools, are typically expected. Excellent written communication, self-motivation, and the ability to work independently and asynchronously help you stand out in distributed teams. These skills and qualities are essential to effectively contribute code, engage with global communities, and maintain productivity in a remote, open-source environment.

How does a remote open source developer typically collaborate with distributed teams and community contributors?

As a remote open source developer, collaboration often takes place through online platforms such as GitHub, GitLab, and community forums. You will regularly participate in code reviews, contribute to discussions on issue trackers, and join virtual meetings or chat channels with both core team members and external contributors. Strong written communication skills are essential, as most interactions are asynchronous and require clear documentation. You'll also need to be proactive in seeking feedback and providing updates, ensuring smooth progress on projects across different time zones.

Job description

his position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Golang Engineer based in Netherlands.

This role offers the opportunity to build and scale high-performance systems using Go within a globally distributed, fully remote engineering organization.
You will contribute to core infrastructure and open-source driven products that power enterprise, cloud, AI, and IoT ecosystems worldwide.
The environment is highly collaborative, involving engineers, community contributors, and cross-functional teams across multiple time zones.
You will work on systems that emphasize performance, security, and reliability at scale.
The role encourages ownership, from design and development through to deployment and operations in some cases.
It is well-suited for engineers who enjoy solving complex distributed systems challenges and improving engineering practices continuously.
You will be part of a culture that values technical excellence, autonomy, and continuous learning in a remote-first setup.

Accountabilities:
  • Design, develop, test, and maintain robust, well-documented software systems using Golang, ensuring high performance and reliability.
  • Debug, troubleshoot, and resolve production and user-facing issues across distributed systems and services.
  • Participate actively in code reviews, architectural discussions, and technical design processes with global engineering teams.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external contributors to define and refine technical specifications and system improvements.
  • Contribute to operational excellence by improving engineering workflows, deployment processes, and system observability.
  • In certain cases, deploy, monitor, and operate services owned by the team in production environments.
  • Support product success through technical advocacy, documentation, and knowledge sharing.
Requirements:
  • Strong academic background in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related STEM field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Proven experience designing and building production-grade software in Golang, ideally in Linux-based environments.
  • Deep familiarity with Linux systems (Ubuntu or Debian preferred) and strong command of system-level concepts.
  • Experience with distributed systems, APIs, and scalable backend architectures (especially for senior-level roles).
  • Strong problem-solving abilities, with a track record of delivering high-quality work independently and on schedule.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to collaborate across global teams.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, adaptability, curiosity, and a proactive, ownership-driven mindset.
  • Ability and willingness to travel internationally twice a year for team gatherings.
  • Nice to have: experience with Ubuntu ecosystem tools such as Juju, LXD, MicroK8s, Snapd, Ubuntu Core, or Ubuntu Pro; performance tuning and security expertise.
Benefits:
  • Competitive global compensation benchmarked to experience, performance, and location.
  • Performance-based annual bonus or commission structure.
  • Annual compensation reviews to recognize and reward contributions.
  • Remote-first work environment with distributed global teams.
  • USD 2,000 annual learning and development budget.
  • Generous annual leave plus maternity and paternity leave policies.
  • Employee Assistance Program supporting wellbeing and personal needs.
  • Opportunities for international travel to team events and collaboration sessions.
  • Travel benefits including Priority Pass and upgrades for long-haul company events.
  • Recognition programs and rewards for outstanding performance.
