Remote Open Source Developer information

What is a Remote Open Source Developer?

A Remote Open Source Developer is a software engineer who contributes to open source projects while working from a location outside of a traditional office. These developers collaborate with distributed teams, often using online platforms like GitHub or GitLab to share code and track issues. Their work involves writing, testing, and documenting code, as well as reviewing contributions from others. Remote Open Source Developers may be volunteers or paid contributors, and they typically engage with a global community to improve and maintain open source software.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Open Source Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Open Source Developer, you need strong programming skills (often in languages like Python, JavaScript, or C++), familiarity with open source workflows, and a solid understanding of version control systems like Git. Experience with collaborative platforms such as GitHub or GitLab, and familiarity with continuous integration (CI) tools, are typically expected. Excellent written communication, self-motivation, and the ability to work independently and asynchronously help you stand out in distributed teams. These skills and qualities are essential to effectively contribute code, engage with global communities, and maintain productivity in a remote, open-source environment.

How does a remote open source developer typically collaborate with distributed teams and community contributors?

As a remote open source developer, collaboration often takes place through online platforms such as GitHub, GitLab, and community forums. You will regularly participate in code reviews, contribute to discussions on issue trackers, and join virtual meetings or chat channels with both core team members and external contributors. Strong written communication skills are essential, as most interactions are asynchronous and require clear documentation. You'll also need to be proactive in seeking feedback and providing updates, ensuring smooth progress on projects across different time zones.

Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Sr. Software Engineer - Go/MongoDB based in Netherlands.

Join a globally distributed engineering team building open-source database tools that help organizations manage data replication, backup, and recovery at scale. In this senior role, you will contribute to the development of high-performance, production-grade solutions for MongoDB environments, solving complex challenges around distributed systems, data consistency, and fault tolerance. You'll collaborate with experienced engineers in a transparent, open-source culture where your contributions are visible to the wider community. This position offers significant technical ownership, opportunities to influence product direction, and the chance to work on technologies used by organizations worldwide. If you're passionate about Go, distributed databases, and scalable infrastructure, this is an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful impact.

Accountabilities
  • Design, develop, and enhance core features for distributed MongoDB replication, backup, and recovery tools using Go.
  • Build and optimize replication engines that support data synchronization, change streams, resumability, and high availability across replica sets and sharded clusters.
  • Improve system resilience by implementing fault-tolerant mechanisms for network interruptions, failovers, and recovery scenarios.
  • Develop scalable solutions for backup, restore, and point-in-time recovery across complex MongoDB deployments.
  • Enhance CLI tools, HTTP APIs, logging, metrics, and observability features to improve operational visibility and user experience.
  • Optimize application performance, concurrency, resource utilization, and throughput for large-scale production environments.
  • Write automated tests, participate in code reviews, and contribute to release quality through CI/CD pipelines and security best practices.
  • Collaborate openly through GitHub, pull requests, issue tracking, and community discussions while contributing to open-source projects.
Requirements
  • Strong professional experience developing production applications in Go (Golang).
  • Solid understanding of concurrency concepts, including goroutines, channels, worker pools, context management, and synchronization.
  • Experience designing or maintaining distributed systems with knowledge of data consistency, idempotency, ordering, and fault tolerance.
  • Hands-on experience with MongoDB, including replica sets, sharding, change streams, oplog management, and large-scale deployments.
  • Experience building command-line applications, REST or HTTP APIs, and implementing structured logging and monitoring solutions.
  • Strong testing mindset with experience writing reliable automated tests and maintaining software quality.
  • Familiarity with Git workflows, code reviews, and collaborative open-source development practices.
  • Excellent analytical, debugging, and problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently in a remote environment.
  • Experience with backup and recovery solutions, CDC pipelines, ETL, Prometheus, cloud object storage, CI/CD tooling, vulnerability scanning, or packaging technologies is considered an advantage.
Benefits
  • Competitive compensation package.
  • Equity incentive program.
  • Fully remote, globally distributed work environment.
  • Flexible working hours and strong work-life balance.
  • Generous paid time off programs.
  • Work-from-anywhere flexibility.
  • Company-provided equipment for your home office.
  • Career development budget covering external training, certifications, and conferences.
  • Connectivity allowance for remote work.
  • Well-being initiatives, team-building programs, and volunteer opportunities.
  • Inclusive, collaborative engineering culture focused on open-source innovation.
