Remote Observability Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Observability Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Observability Engineer, you need strong expertise in monitoring, logging, and tracing systems, along with a background in computer science or related technical fields. Familiarity with tools like Prometheus, Grafana, ELK Stack, Datadog, and cloud platforms is typically required, as well as relevant certifications such as AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner or Google Cloud Professional DevOps Engineer. Excellent problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and a proactive mindset help you detect and resolve issues before they impact users. These competencies ensure system reliability, enable rapid incident response, and support seamless collaboration in distributed environments.

What are the typical collaboration patterns for a Remote Observability Engineer working with distributed teams?

Remote Observability Engineers frequently collaborate with software developers, DevOps teams, and IT operations to ensure systems are monitored effectively and issues are detected early. Working remotely, you'll often use communication tools like Slack, Jira, and video conferencing to coordinate incident response, discuss monitoring strategies, and review system health dashboards. Regular sync meetings and asynchronous updates are common, and you'll likely contribute to documentation and knowledge sharing to keep all stakeholders informed. Building strong communication habits is important, as much of the troubleshooting and improvement work hinges on clear coordination with multiple teams.

What is a Remote Observability Engineer?

A Remote Observability Engineer is a professional responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining systems that monitor the health, performance, and reliability of software applications and infrastructure from a remote location. They use observability tools to collect and analyze logs, metrics, and traces, helping organizations quickly detect and resolve issues. Their work ensures that distributed systems are transparent, reliable, and efficient, often collaborating with development, operations, and security teams. Remote Observability Engineers often work from anywhere, leveraging cloud-based tools and platforms to manage complex IT environments.

What is the difference between Remote Observability Engineer vs Site Reliability Engineer?

AspectRemote Observability EngineerSite Reliability Engineer
CredentialsKnowledge of monitoring tools, scripting, cloud platformsSame as Observability Engineer, plus SRE certifications often preferred
Work EnvironmentFocus on monitoring, logging, and tracing systems remotelyBroader scope including system reliability, incident response, and automation
Industry UsagePrimarily in tech, SaaS, cloud servicesWidely in tech, finance, and large-scale online services

The Remote Observability Engineer specializes in monitoring and analyzing system performance remotely, focusing on tools like logs and metrics. In contrast, the Site Reliability Engineer has a broader role, ensuring overall system reliability, automation, and incident management. While both roles require similar technical skills, SREs often have additional responsibilities related to system resilience and scalability.

Job description

This position is posted by Jobgether on behalf of a partner company. We are currently looking for a Staff Product Engineer, Backend (Go, Java) in Netherlands.

This is an exceptional opportunity for a senior backend engineer who wants to shape the future of modern observability platforms at scale. In this role, you will lead architectural initiatives focused on distributed backend systems, usage-based billing infrastructure, and high-volume data processing. You will work in a highly collaborative remote-first environment where technical leadership, product thinking, and engineering excellence are deeply valued. The position combines hands-on backend development with strategic ownership of reliability, scalability, and operational efficiency across mission-critical systems. You will partner closely with product, engineering, and infrastructure teams while mentoring developers and influencing technical direction across the organization. This role is ideal for someone passionate about observability, distributed systems, and building elegant developer-focused platforms with measurable business impact.

Accountabilities:
  • Lead the architectural design and evolution of scalable backend systems using Go and distributed systems best practices.
  • Develop and maintain reliable usage-based billing and metering solutions that ensure accurate event tracking and revenue operations.
  • Build integrations between internal platforms, payment providers, cloud marketplaces, and reporting systems.
  • Drive technical strategy for backend infrastructure focused on reliability, maintainability, scalability, and cost efficiency.
  • Establish and promote engineering standards related to code quality, testing, observability, and system design.
  • Proactively identify technical risks, reliability concerns, and performance bottlenecks before they impact operations.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align technical solutions with product and customer requirements.
  • Mentor engineers through technical guidance, architecture reviews, and knowledge sharing initiatives.
  • Contribute to observability improvements and OpenTelemetry-driven monitoring practices across engineering workflows.
  • Optimize internal tooling, billing transparency, forecasting capabilities, and customer-facing cost visibility solutions.
  • Participate in roadmap discussions and help translate business objectives into scalable engineering solutions.

Requirements:

  • Extensive experience designing and scaling distributed backend systems using Go.
  • Strong understanding of billing systems, metering infrastructure, or usage-based pricing models.
  • Experience integrating with payment providers such as Stripe or similar financial platforms is highly desirable.
  • Solid background in backend architecture, API design, reliability engineering, and scalable infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of Java and multi-language backend ecosystems is considered a plus.
  • Strong expertise in observability practices, monitoring systems, and OpenTelemetry concepts.
  • Experience leveraging AI-assisted development tools and applying strong technical judgment to production code.
  • Deep understanding of testing methodologies and data accuracy requirements in financial or billing environments.
  • Strong product mindset with the ability to balance technical constraints and user experience.
  • Proven leadership and mentorship experience in high-performing engineering teams.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills in distributed remote environments.
  • Ability to simplify complex technical concepts and drive alignment across teams and stakeholders.

Benefits:

  • Competitive salary package with meaningful equity participation.
  • Fully remote-first work environment with flexible working arrangements across Europe.
  • Phone and internet allowance.
  • Location-specific employee benefits and support programs.
  • Opportunity to work with a high-growth, well-funded technology company.
  • Collaborative engineering culture focused on innovation, experimentation, and ownership.
  • Direct access to founders and senior leadership.
  • Strong career growth and professional development opportunities.
  • Exposure to cutting-edge observability technologies and large-scale backend systems.
  • Inclusive, transparent, and high-trust team environment.
