Remote Gitops Engineer information

What is a Remote GitOps Engineer?

A Remote GitOps Engineer is a software professional who manages and automates infrastructure and application deployments using GitOps principles, typically while working from a remote location. GitOps is a methodology that uses Git repositories as the single source of truth for declarative infrastructure and applications. The engineer is responsible for implementing, maintaining, and troubleshooting continuous deployment pipelines, ensuring that changes are version-controlled and auditable. They often work with tools like Kubernetes, ArgoCD, and Flux, collaborating with development and operations teams to streamline DevOps workflows.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote GitOps Engineer?

To thrive as a Remote GitOps Engineer, you need a strong background in software development, infrastructure-as-code, and experience with cloud platforms, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Kubernetes, Docker, Terraform, Git, and CI/CD systems, along with certifications such as CKA or AWS Certified DevOps Engineer, is highly valuable. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and self-motivation are key soft skills for collaborating remotely and managing complex workflows. These skills ensure efficient, reliable, and scalable deployment pipelines, enabling teams to deliver software securely and quickly in distributed environments.

How does a Remote GitOps Engineer typically collaborate with development and operations teams to ensure smooth deployment processes?

As a Remote GitOps Engineer, you'll frequently collaborate with both development and operations teams through tools like Git, Slack, and video conferencing. Your main responsibility is to ensure deployment pipelines are automated and transparent, often acting as a bridge between developers writing code and operations teams managing infrastructure. Regular communication and documentation are crucial to resolve issues quickly and keep everyone aligned. You will also participate in code reviews, incident response, and infrastructure improvements, ensuring deployments are reliable and reproducible across distributed teams.

What is the difference between Remote Gitops Engineer vs Cloud Engineer?

AspectRemote Gitops EngineerCloud Engineer
Required CredentialsCertifications like Kubernetes, Docker, GitOps toolsCloud platform certifications (AWS, Azure, GCP), Linux skills
Work EnvironmentRemote, DevOps teams, CI/CD pipelinesRemote or on-site, cloud infrastructure management
Industry UsageDevOps, software development, automationCloud services, infrastructure, application deployment
Search & Comparison IntentFocus on automation, deployment, CI/CDFocus on cloud infrastructure, architecture

The Remote Gitops Engineer specializes in automating deployment processes using GitOps tools and practices, primarily working remotely within DevOps teams. In contrast, a Cloud Engineer manages cloud infrastructure and services across platforms like AWS, Azure, or GCP. While both roles require cloud and automation skills, the Gitops Engineer emphasizes continuous deployment and automation pipelines, whereas the Cloud Engineer focuses on infrastructure setup and management.

Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Staff Engineer, Platform & Infrastructure based in Netherlands.

This is a high-impact engineering role focused on owning and evolving the infrastructure that powers a modern developer platform.
You will take end-to-end responsibility for cloud infrastructure, platform reliability, deployment foundations, and critical data systems.
A key focus will be building scalable BYOC and private-cloud capabilities that can serve customers without requiring bespoke engineering for every deployment.
You will establish robust Infrastructure as Code, GitOps, observability, security, and compliance practices that enable fast and reliable delivery.
The role combines deep technical expertise with product thinking, giving you a direct influence on platform strategy and engineering priorities.
You will work within a small, autonomous, remote-first team where ownership, pragmatism, and strong technical judgment are highly valued.
This opportunity is well suited to an experienced platform or infrastructure engineer who enjoys solving complex problems and shaping systems at scale.

Accountabilities
  • Own and scale the cloud infrastructure supporting the platform, including compute, networking, and core data-layer services.
  • Lead the development and productization of Bring Your Own Cloud (BYOC) and private-cloud deployments, including provisioning, upgrades, and observability.
  • Build and improve Infrastructure as Code and GitOps foundations that allow a small engineering team to deliver quickly and reliably.
  • Establish reliability as a core platform capability through meaningful Service Level Objectives (SLOs), monitoring, and trusted incident-management practices.
  • Lead the evolution of critical data infrastructure, including PostgreSQL, Redis, Elasticsearch, and ClickHouse as usage scales.
  • Drive infrastructure-related security and compliance initiatives, including SOC 2, GDPR, HIPAA, penetration testing, and enterprise security reviews.
  • Make architectural decisions that balance scalability, reliability, security, performance, maintainability, and delivery speed.
  • Work with customer-facing and engineering teams to understand infrastructure challenges and turn customer requirements into scalable platform capabilities.
  • Contribute to technical roadmaps and broader company strategy through ownership of major infrastructure and platform decisions.
  • Participate in incident response, help unblock complex technical problems, and raise the engineering standard across the team.
Requirements
  • 10+ years of experience in platform engineering, infrastructure, DevOps, SRE, or related disciplines, with demonstrated experience operating high-traffic production systems.
  • Deep hands-on Kubernetes experience in production, together with strong judgment about when Kubernetes is and is not the appropriate solution.
  • Experience operating software in environments outside your direct control, such as BYOC, single-tenant, on-premises, or air-gapped environments.
  • Strong AWS expertise; experience with GCP and Azure is an advantage.
  • Advanced proficiency with Terraform, including reusable modules, secure state management, and multi-account cloud architectures.
  • Strong database expertise, particularly PostgreSQL, including performance optimization, migrations under load, replication, and operational reliability.
  • Practical experience with compliance and security programs such as SOC 2, ISO audits, penetration testing, and enterprise security reviews.
  • Strong understanding of infrastructure security, observability, incident response, deployment automation, and production operations.
  • Familiarity with TypeScript and Node.js and the ability to understand application-level requirements from a platform perspective.
  • Strong product mindset and developer empathy, with the ability to translate customer problems into effective technical solutions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to collaborate across technical and business functions.
  • Proactive, pragmatic, positive, and low-ego approach to teamwork, including a willingness to participate in incidents and help unblock colleagues.
  • High degree of autonomy, ownership, and adaptability in a fast-moving startup environment.
  • Comfortable working effectively within a remote-first, distributed organization.
  • Based in Europe, with the role specifically listed for candidates in the Netherlands.
Benefits
  • Competitive Staff-level compensation of $140,000-$220,000, adjusted according to location.
  • Equity participation, providing an opportunity to share in the long-term value created by your work.
  • Remote-first work environment across eligible locations in Europe, North America, and LATAM.
  • Significant autonomy over infrastructure architecture, platform strategy, and technical priorities.
  • Opportunity to build foundational infrastructure for a rapidly growing developer-focused platform.
  • Direct influence on technical roadmaps, engineering standards, and broader company strategy.
  • Opportunity to work on complex infrastructure challenges involving Kubernetes, AWS, Terraform, BYOC, databases, security, reliability, and compliance.
  • Collaboration with a small, highly autonomous engineering team in a fast-paced startup environment.
