What is a remote non practicing attorney?

A remote non practicing attorney is a legal professional who has obtained a law degree and may have passed the bar exam but does not currently practice law in a courtroom or represent clients. Instead, they use their legal expertise in roles such as legal consulting, compliance, research, writing, or legal technology, often working from a remote location. These positions allow attorneys to leverage their legal knowledge without engaging in traditional legal practice, offering flexibility and alternative career paths within or related to the legal field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote non practicing attorney?

To excel as a Remote Non Practicing Attorney, you need a Juris Doctor degree, a thorough understanding of legal principles, and strong legal research and writing skills. Familiarity with legal research databases such as Westlaw or LexisNexis, and proficiency in remote collaboration tools like Zoom or Microsoft Teams, are typically required. Excellent communication, attention to detail, and time management are crucial soft skills for effectively delivering legal analysis and consulting services from a distance. These abilities ensure high-quality, reliable legal support and seamless collaboration with clients and teams in a remote work environment.

What are some common challenges faced by remote non practicing attorneys, and how can these be managed effectively?

Remote non-practicing attorneys often encounter challenges such as maintaining effective communication with legal teams, staying updated on changing regulations, and managing time across multiple projects. To address these, it's helpful to establish clear communication protocols, leverage project management tools, and dedicate time for ongoing legal education. Building strong relationships with colleagues through regular check-ins and virtual meetings can also foster collaboration and ensure you stay connected to the broader legal team.

Job description

Research & Writing Attorney

ALBUQUERQUE, NM

No relocation required — Albuquerque-area and remote-eligible candidates welcome.

About Us

Parnall Law Firm is the most highly reviewed and largest personal injury firm in New Mexico, dedicated to client service and results.

  • Top Culture: “Best Place to Work” and “Top Workplace” for six and five consecutive years, respectively — awards based on anonymous feedback from our employees collected by an independent organization.
  • Unmatched Support: Experienced investigators (retired police officers), dedicated case managers, and paralegals.
  • Team Environment: Collaborative and creative attorneys who foster teamwork and mentorship across every practice team.

Join us to focus on what you do best: delivering the legal research and writing that powers our attorneys’ advocacy for injured clients and maximizes case outcomes.

Who Are We Looking For? (Requirements)

  • Active license to practice law in New Mexico, or eligibility for admission.
  • Strong legal research, analysis, and writing skills, with the ability to translate research into persuasive, well-supported drafts.
  • Experience drafting motions, briefs, memoranda, and other litigation documents.
  • Personal injury or civil litigation experience preferred; insurance defense or appellate background is a plus.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with trial attorneys and Team Leads across multiple case teams and manage competing deadlines.

Why Join Us?

  • Competitive Compensation: Commensurate with experience.
  • Sign-on bonus: $25,000 paid incrementally over the first 6 months of employment
  • Comprehensive Benefits: Health, dental, and vision insurance; life, short and long term disability insurance; 401(k) retirement plan.
  • Time Off: Paid time off (PTO) and select paid holidays.
  • Work-Life Balance: Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM — a research and writing role with no court appearances required.

Your Role

As a Research & Writing Attorney, you will provide the legal analysis and drafting that support our trial attorneys’ mission: maximizing recovery for the value of our clients’ harm and the wrong that caused it. You will be a key member of a team dedicated to making a meaningful impact for injured clients across New Mexico.

Duties / Responsibilities

Legal Research:

  • Research New Mexico and applicable law on liability, damages, coverage, and procedural issues arising in personal injury and premises liability matters.
  • Monitor and summarize developments in New Mexico case law, statutes, and court rules relevant to the firm’s practice.

Drafting:

  • Prepare motions, responses, briefs, and legal memoranda in support of pre-litigation and litigation case teams.
  • Draft discovery-related legal analysis and assist with pleadings as needed.

Case Strategy Support:

  • Collaborate with trial attorneys and Team Leads to identify legal issues, anticipate defense arguments, and strengthen case positions.
  • Provide research support for settlement negotiations, mediation, and trial preparation.

General Responsibilities:

  • Deliver timely, well-supported written work product that meets firm quality standards.
  • Collaborate effectively with attorneys and staff to ensure cases move efficiently through the process.
