Labcorp is seeking a Director, Corporate Coding

Work Schedule

Monday-Friday standard business hours with flexibility required as needed

This hybrid position offers a balanced schedule of three in-office workdays at our Burlington or Durham, NC locations and two remote workdays per week, supporting both collaboration and flexibility, with occasional onsite meetings and leadership sessions (generally less than 10% travel).

About the Role

The Director of Corporate Coding provides enterprise-wide leadership for CPT coding strategy, compliance, and operations across clinical laboratory, anatomic pathology, and molecular diagnostic services. This role requires deep technical expertise in laboratory testing combined with strong management experience to lead coding teams and ensure regulatory compliance.

The Director partners closely with laboratory leadership, revenue cycle, compliance, and payer policy teams to drive coding accuracy, support appropriate test utilization, and mitigate audit risk. This role also represents the organization in key industry forums, contributing to the advancement of laboratory coding standards and reimbursement policy.

Job Responsibilities

Corporate Coding Strategy & Governance

  • Lead and oversee corporate coding activities supporting laboratory, pathology, and molecular diagnostic services across the enterprise.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain coding policies, procedures, governance standards, and quality assurance programs.
  • Provide strategic guidance on CPT, HCPCS, PLA, MAAA, GSP, and molecular diagnostic coding issues impacting reimbursement, compliance, and operational performance.
  • Provide strategic input regarding emerging laboratory technologies and diagnostic innovations to establish appropriate coding and reimbursement pathways.

Compliance, Quality & Risk Management

  • Ensure compliance with CMS, AMA, OIG, commercial payer, and applicable federal and state regulatory requirements.
  • Direct coding quality assurance programs, audits, monitoring activities, and corrective action initiatives.
  • Identify coding, reimbursement, and compliance risks through ongoing monitoring, reporting, and audit activities.
  • Partner with compliance and legal stakeholders to address complex coding and reimbursement challenges.

Operational Excellence

  • Drive workflow optimization, standardization, automation, and continuous improvement initiatives across coding operations.
  • Establish performance metrics and reporting processes to monitor coding quality, reimbursement outcomes, and operational effectiveness.
  • Leverage coding technologies, databases, and analytics tools to improve coding accuracy and operational performance.

Leadership & Industry Engagement

  • Lead, develop, and manage coding professionals through performance management, coaching, succession planning, and organizational development initiatives.
  • Collaborate with laboratory leadership, revenue cycle teams, compliance, finance, government affairs, medical affairs, and operational stakeholders to support enterprise objectives.
  • Represent the organization in industry organizations, workgroups, advocacy efforts, and coding forums, including laboratory coding and reimbursement-focused initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Biology, Molecular Biology, Chemistry, or related scientific discipline; Equivalent experience in clinical laboratory, pathology, or molecular diagnostics may be considered in lieu of a laboratory science degree.

  • 5 or more years extensive technical knowledge of laboratory testing;
  • 5 or more years proven leadership and management experience, including
    • Leading coding, lab, or revenue cycle teams
    • Driving operational performance, standardization, and team development
  • 8 years or more experience in healthcare coding, laboratory operations, or related field

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, Medical Laboratory Science, Molecular Biology, Biology, Chemistry, or another scientific discipline.

  • 5 years or more experience with:
    • Molecular diagnostics coding (Tier 1/Tier 2, GSPs, PLA codes)
    • Payer policy interpretation and reimbursement strategy
    • Lab outreach or reference laboratory environments
  • 5 years or more experience representing an organization in national industry or coding groups (e.g., ACLA, AMA CPT processes)
