Job description

About the unit:
The Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU) is a 36-bed ICU located in the Meijer Heart Center specializing in highly acute post-cardiac and advanced heart failure patients. Nurse techs are able to care for a wide range of patients and devices including heart/lung transplant patients, post-operative open-heart patients, and more. We are experts in caring for the most critically ill patients in our area and throughout Michigan. We are at the forefront of cardiac medicine, engaging in cutting-edge innovation and research. Top preferred skills we seek in our Nurse Techs include experience in roles that require constant use of critical thinking skills, resilience, a very high level of self-motivation and drive, flexibility with availability, commitment to excellence, receptive to constructive feedback.
Scope of Work:
ICU Orientation weeks will require flexibility to train during weekdays for several weeks, before phasing into regular night shifts. Nurse Technicians act as a team member in the delivery of quality patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN). Responsibilities include assisting with complex ICU procedures such as placing ART lines, taking vitals, checking blood sugars, bed bathing, ambulating, wound care, catheterization, charting and acting as a safety attendant for patients. Nurse Techs may also be floated to other units with a need for a 1:1 patient safety sitter for the entirety of the shift.
Provides input in the development of an individualized plan of care. Ensures that required documentation is performed in an accurate and timely manner.
Articulates the nursing technician role to the patient, family and health team members. Provides support to facilitate safe, quality patient care in a cost-effective manner.
Cleans patient's environment / work area / equipment and helps to troubleshoot and report any equipment malfunctions to appropriate department / unit personnel.
Demonstrates a high standard of moral and ethical behavior. Advocates for privacy, confidentiality and security of patient, staff and organization data.
Orientation Requirements
ICU orientation includes up to 11 weeks of training with a preceptor 7am-7:30pm on weekdays & rotating every third weekend.
Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Within 90 Days
  • 1 year of inpatient care experience is strongly preferred
