These roles typically involve designing, coding, testing, and maintaining apps for platforms like iOS and Android. Remote Mobile jobs can include roles such as mobile app developer, mobile QA tester, or mobile UX/UI designer. Working remotely allows for greater flexibility and access to opportunities from companies worldwide while focusing on creating or supporting mobile applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote mobile developer?

To thrive as a Remote Mobile Developer, you need strong programming skills in languages like Swift, Kotlin, or React Native, along with experience in mobile app design and deployment. Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git), cloud services, and app store submission processes is typically required. Excellent communication, self-motivation, and time management are critical soft skills for remote collaboration and productivity. These skills and qualities ensure you can deliver high-quality mobile applications efficiently while working independently within distributed teams.

What are the most common communication challenges for remote mobile developers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote mobile developers often face challenges such as time zone differences, asynchronous communication, and limited face-to-face interaction with team members. To overcome these, it's important to establish clear communication channels, set regular check-ins, and utilize collaboration tools like Slack, Jira, or Trello. Proactively updating your team on progress and potential blockers helps maintain transparency and ensures project alignment, making remote work more efficient and enjoyable.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop cross-platform mobile applications using React Native and native iOS and Android SDKs.

  • Design and implement UX workflows for clinical trial participants and at-home diagnostic patients.

  • Own the user experience, app performance, reliability, and observability of the apps and features developed.

Job description

As a Senior Mobile App Engineer, you'll help power Beacon's mission by building cross-platform apps that interface with our EEG headbands and other wearables to capture high-fidelity data and enable seamless experiences for patients and clinicians.

This isn't just another app - you'll be crafting tools that help unlock insights into neurological, psychiatric, and sleep disorders, with the potential to improve lives at scale.

Beacon's robust asynchronous work practices ensure a first-class remote work experience, but we also have in-person office hubs located in Boston and New York. For this position we will consider candidates based anywhere in the US Eastern time zone.

What success looks like:

As part of our small, mission-driven Mobile Apps Team, you will:

  • Develop our React Native mobile applications and our native iOS and Android BLE device SDKs.
  • Design and implement UX workflows for clinical trial participants and at-home diagnostic patients.
  • Own the user experience, app performance, reliability, and observability of the apps and features you develop, leveraging feedback from real users in a diverse set of use cases and environments.
  • Partner with our Devices team, other Platform teams, and product designers to develop user-centric mobile app capabilities that are deeply integrated with the rest of Beacon's product ecosystem.
  • Help shape the roadmap and technical direction of our mobile platform.

In your first 3-6 months, you might:

  • Build a new in-app feature to validate EEG signal quality before data capture.
  • Improve BLE pairing and reconnection reliability across both iOS and Android.
  • Streamline onboarding for new patients and trial participants to help make our devices easier to use than ever.
  • Deploy new features to help our Clinical Operations team track compliance.
What you will bring:

You'll be a great fit if you have:

  • 8+ years of experience in mobile development (native iOS/Android and/or React Native).
  • Experience working with BLE, sensor integration, or health data streams.
  • A product mindset - you care deeply about UX, edge cases, and performance.
  • Familiarity with our tech stack (TypeScript, React Native, Swift, Kotlin, Expo, GitHub)
  • Strong communication skills and comfort working in a collaborative, async environment

Bonus points if you've:

  • Worked with medical devices, EEG, or wearables.
  • Integrated BLE peripheral devices into iOS and/or Android applications.
  • Written native code extensively for either iOS or Android, in addition to React Native.
  • Worked on apps for clinical trials, patients, or in some other regulated environment.
  • Contributed to open source mobile or BLE projects.
The salary range for this role is $170,000 - $190,000. Salary ranges are determined using current market compensation data for this role and adjusted based on experience, skills, and location. The base salary is one component of the total compensation package, which includes equity, PTO and other benefits.

At Beacon, we've found that cultural and scientific impact is driven most by those that lead by example. As such, we're always seeking new contributors whose work demonstrates an avid curiosity, a bias towards simplicity, an eye for composability, a self-service mindset, and - most of all - a deep empathy towards colleagues, stakeholders, users, and patients. We believe a diverse team builds more robust systems and achieves higher impact.
