Remote Microgrid information

What is a remote microgrid?

A remote microgrid is a localized energy system that can operate independently from the main power grid, typically used in isolated or off-grid locations. It combines various energy sources, such as solar panels, wind turbines, batteries, and sometimes diesel generators, to provide reliable electricity to communities or facilities that are far from centralized power infrastructure. Remote microgrids are essential for improving energy access, resilience, and sustainability in remote areas. They help reduce reliance on fossil fuels and support the integration of renewable energy sources.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote microgrid engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Microgrid Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering, renewable energy systems, and power management, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with SCADA systems, energy management software, and certifications like Professional Engineer (PE) or microgrid-specific credentials are often required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with remote teams and stakeholders. These competencies ensure the reliable design, implementation, and operation of microgrids in diverse and often challenging environments.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in remote microgrid roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals working with remote microgrids often encounter challenges such as limited access to on-site resources, unpredictable weather conditions affecting energy supply, and the need for reliable remote monitoring and control systems. Effective communication with local teams and stakeholders is essential, as is staying updated on the latest advancements in microgrid technologies. Addressing these challenges typically involves leveraging robust digital tools, developing contingency plans, and fostering strong collaboration with both technical and non-technical partners to ensure seamless operation and maintenance of the microgrid.

What is the difference between Remote Microgrid vs Remote Solar Technician?

AspectRemote MicrogridRemote Solar Technician

Industry UsagePower systems, renewable energy, off-grid solutionsSolar energy, renewable energy, off-grid applications
Common Search/ComparisonRemote Microgrid vs Remote Solar Technician

The Remote Microgrid role focuses on designing, managing, and maintaining integrated power systems that combine various energy sources for remote areas. In contrast, a Remote Solar Technician specializes in installing and servicing solar panel systems. Both roles require renewable energy certifications and often operate in off-grid environments, but their specific responsibilities and technical focus differ.

About NV5

NV5's Clean Mobility Infrastructure team delivers engineering and design solutions that accelerate the transition to zero-emission transportation. Our engineers and project managers design innovative electrical infrastructure for commercial, industrial, fleet, and public-sector clients across the United States.

Our work includes Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE), Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), microgrids, solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, and emerging renewable energy technologies. We support projects from initial feasibility and utility coordination through detailed design, permitting, construction, and commissioning.

As our team continues to grow, we are seeking an experienced Senior Electrical Engineer who enjoys solving complex engineering challenges while helping shape the future of clean transportation infrastructure.

This position is fully remote within the United States.

Why Join NV5?

  • Work on some of the nation's largest electrification projects, learn industry leading technology and apply for EV and clean energy projects.
  • Collaborate with industry experts in EV infrastructure, battery storage, and renewable energy.
  • Fully remote work environment with opportunities for occasional travel.
  • Be part of a rapidly growing team helping shape the future of transportation electrification.
Responsibilities

What You'll Do

As a Senior Electrical Engineer, you will play a key role in the engineering and design of EV charging infrastructure, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), microgrids, and related power distribution projects. Project sizes range from standalone Level 2 and DC Fast Charging installations to large fleet electrification programs and utility-scale energy storage systems.

Responsibilities include:

  • Lead electrical engineering and design for EVSE, BESS, microgrid, and commercial/industrial projects (Solar PV experience is a plus).
  • Develop construction drawings, electrical specifications, and engineering calculations.
  • Perform electrical studies including conductor sizing, voltage drop, overcurrent protection coordination, conduit sizing, fault current calculations, and utility service design in accordance with the NEC and applicable utility standards.
  • Prepare and review single-line diagrams, panel schedules, site plans, and equipment layouts.
  • Coordinate utility interconnection requirements and support utility application packages.
  • Support projects through feasibility, preliminary engineering, detailed design, permitting, construction, commissioning, and project closeout.
  • Perform technical quality reviews and PE sealing of engineering documents when applicable.
  • Collaborate with civil engineers, project managers, permitting specialists, and clients throughout all project phases.
  • Support construction by responding to RFIs, reviewing submittals, and resolving field design issues.
  • Participate in client meetings and occasional site visits as required.
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance across project teams.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from an accredited university.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license, or ability to obtain licensure within 12 months of hire.
  • Minimum of 5 years of electrical engineering experience in power systems, EV infrastructure, BESS, renewable energy, or related fields.
  • Strong working knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC), utility standards, and applicable industry codes.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and Bluebeam.
  • Experience with ETAP and/or SKM preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to independently manage multiple projects and collaborate effectively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment.

Experience with one or more of the following is highly desirable:

  • Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
  • Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE)
