Remote Medical Device Software Engineer information

What does a remote medical device software engineer do?

A Remote Medical Device Software Engineer designs, develops, tests, and maintains software used in medical devices while working from a remote location. They are responsible for ensuring the software complies with healthcare regulations and safety standards, such as FDA or ISO requirements. Their work often involves collaborating with cross-functional teams, troubleshooting issues, and updating software throughout the product lifecycle. This role requires expertise in both software engineering and medical device regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote medical device software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Medical Device Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills (especially in C/C++ or Python), a solid understanding of embedded systems, and a degree in computer science, biomedical engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with medical device standards (such as IEC 62304), version control systems like Git, and experience with software validation and regulatory documentation are typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, proactive communication, and strong collaboration skills are vital for working effectively in distributed teams. These skills ensure the development of safe, high-quality software that meets strict regulatory requirements and supports patient health.

What are some common challenges faced by remote medical device software engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Medical Device Software Engineers often encounter challenges related to stringent regulatory compliance, secure communication, and effective collaboration with cross-functional teams such as QA, hardware engineers, and clinicians. Managing time zones and clear documentation is essential to ensure code quality and traceability, especially since these devices directly impact patient safety. To address these challenges, engineers should prioritize robust version control, frequent virtual check-ins, and proactive communication to align with team goals and regulatory requirements. Leveraging collaboration tools and maintaining detailed documentation can further streamline the development process and facilitate smooth teamwork.

Job description

About Cleerly

We're Cleerly – a healthcare company that's revolutionizing how heart disease is diagnosed, treated, and tracked. We were founded in 2017 by one of the world's leading cardiologists and are a growing team of world-class engineering, operations, medical affairs, marketing, and sales leaders. We raised $223M in Series C funding in 2022 which has enabled rapid growth and continued support of our mission. In December 2024 we received an additional $106M in a Series C extension funding. Most of our teams work remotely and have access to our offices in Denver, Colorado, New, York, New York, Dallas, Texas, and Lisbon, Portugal with some roles requiring you to be on-site in a location.

Cleerly has created a new standard of care for heart disease through value-based, AI-driven precision diagnostic solutions with the goal of helping prevent heart attacks. Our technology goes beyond traditional measures of heart disease by enabling comprehensive quantification and characterization of atherosclerosis, or plaque buildup, in each of the heart arteries. Cleerly's solutions are supported by more than a decade of performing some of the world's largest clinical trials to identify important findings beyond symptoms that increase a person's risk of heart attacks.

At Cleerly, we collaborate digitally and use a wide variety of systems. Our people use Google Workspace (GMail, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides), Slack, Confluence/Jira, and Zoom Video, prior experience in these areas is a plus. Role or department specific technology needs may vary and will be listed as requirements in the job description.

While we are mostly a remote company, travel is required for some team meetings and cross function projects typically once per month or once per quarter, for some roles like sales or external facing roles travel could be up to 90% of the time.

Cleerly is committed to providing safe and effective medical software that meets customer needs and our intended use. The adherence to all applicable regulatory and statutory requirements establishes a clear framework for setting measurable quality objectives. Our commitment to continually improving our products and processes proactively manages risks, ensuring ongoing compliance throughout the entire software lifecycle.  Understanding this role's relevance and importance is critical to achieving Cleerly's quality objectives.
About the Opportunity

We're seeking a Software Engineer III with strong fullstack skills to help scale and evolve our enterprise-grade platform for quantitative computer-aided diagnosis. In this role, you'll be a key contributor to the development of secure, reliable, and maintainable systems, delivering high-impact features and improving the foundation that powers our healthcare solutions.

The Operational System team owns the Core Lab Case Management platform, which is the central nervous system of our laboratory operations. We build the workflows that orchestrate the lifecycle of each case, ensuring that complex case data moves seamlessly through the lab and is categorized and prioritized correctly. By optimizing how cases are processed, we ensure our operations remain scalable and our COGS grows efficiently, not linearly, alongside our business.

RequirementsQualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 5–8 years of professional experience as a software engineer, including fullstack development.
  • Proficiency in React, CSS, Node.js, and TypeScript.
  • Experience designing and consuming RESTful APIs.
  • Familiarity with relational databases like PostgreSQL.
  • Strong understanding of modern software engineering practices, system design, and debugging.
  • Ability to take ownership of medium-to-large features and follow through from idea to production.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills, especially in distributed environments.
Preferred
  • Familiarity with regulated domains (e.g., healthcare, fintech) and high-availability infrastructure.
  • Experience with containerized cloud environments (Docker, AWS EKS), CI/CD automation, and infrastructure as code.
  • Exposure to event-driven architecture or microservices with asynchronous workflows.
  • Familiarity with Python is a plus
Responsibilities
  • Develop scalable backend services (Node.js, TypeScript) and performant user-facing applications (React, Next.js).
  • Build performant, accessible, and user-friendly interfaces with modern UI frameworks (Ant).
  • Write testable, observable, and maintainable code that meets our performance and quality standards.
  • Participate in system design reviews and propose practical, scalable improvements.
  • Collaborate with product, design, and engineering teammates in an agile team to deliver reliable solutions to stakeholders.
  • Contribute to documentation, code reviews, and shared engineering standards.
  • Participate in on-call rotations and assist with triaging production issues.
