How do Remote Medical Coders typically communicate and collaborate with healthcare providers and team members?

Remote Medical Coders often collaborate with healthcare providers, billing teams, and other coders through secure digital platforms, email, and scheduled video conferences. Clear communication is essential to clarify documentation, resolve coding discrepancies, and ensure accurate billing. Many employers use specialized health information systems and project management tools to streamline workflow and maintain HIPAA compliance. Frequent virtual meetings and messaging help foster teamwork and keep everyone aligned, even when working from different locations.

Are remote medical coders in demand?

Remote medical coders are in high demand due to the ongoing need for accurate medical billing and coding in healthcare. The role often requires certification and familiarity with coding systems like ICD-10 and CPT, and the job market is expected to grow as healthcare providers expand remote operations.

Are medical coders being phased out?

Medical coders are not being phased out; the demand for skilled professionals remains steady due to ongoing healthcare documentation and billing needs. Advances in technology, such as coding software and electronic health records, have changed workflows but still require human oversight and expertise, especially for complex cases and compliance. Certification and familiarity with coding systems like ICD-10 and CPT are valuable for job security in this field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Medical Coder, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Medical Coder, you need a solid understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and coding systems such as ICD-10 and CPT, usually supported by a coding certification (e.g., CPC, CCS). Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs) and coding software like 3M or Epic is essential for accurate and efficient work. Attention to detail, time management, and strong written communication skills help remote coders excel in independent, deadline-driven environments. These abilities ensure accurate billing, compliance with regulations, and minimal claim denials, which are critical for healthcare organizations' operational and financial success.

Remote medical coders can earn $70,000 or more annually by gaining certification such as CPC or CCS, gaining experience, and working for multiple healthcare providers or agencies. A full-time remote schedule and efficient workflow are essential for reaching this income level.

What is a Remote Medical Coder?

A remote medical coder is a healthcare professional who reviews clinical documents and assigns standardized codes for diagnoses, procedures, and medical services, all while working from a remote location such as their home. These codes are essential for billing, insurance claims, and maintaining patient records. Remote medical coders typically use electronic health records (EHR) and must have a strong understanding of medical terminology, coding systems like ICD-10 and CPT, and relevant regulations. Working remotely offers flexibility but still requires attention to detail, confidentiality, and adherence to industry standards.

What Does a Remote Medical Coder Do?

Remote medical coders are medical coders who work from home or locations outside of healthcare facilities. They process patient information, such as diagnosis, services rendered, and equipment used to conduct tests, in order to translate it into medical codes consisting of numbers and letters. Billing and coding specialists manage this information so that patients or their insurance companies can be billed appropriately. Remote medical coders may be self-employed or work for large coding firms that contract with hospitals or healthcare facilities.

This is a remote role
ABOUT AAPC
AAPC (www.aapc.com) is the world's largest and fastest-growing healthcare training, certification, and solutions association, serving more than 300,000 members across medical coding and revenue cycle management. Our digital products are the primary way members learn, grow, and advance their careers - and we're investing heavily in making those experiences world-class.
POSITION SUMMARY
We're looking for a curious, versatile UX Designer to help shape the future of our digital products - from early-stage concepts to polished, tested experiences.
This is a generalist role with real range. Some weeks you'll be deep in strategy, shaping a brand-new product from nothing but a fuzzy idea. Other weeks you'll be iterating on a checkout flow or analyzing A/B test results. You'll partner directly with product, marketing, and engineering, and report to a senior UX/CX leader who values craft, autonomy, and a point of view. This is not primarily a UI or visual design role - but you have a strong eye for good design, understand brand consistency, and can tell the difference between something that merely works and something that feels right. If you get energized by ambiguous problems and love seeing your work ship, you'll thrive here.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Translate ambiguous problems and early-stage concepts into user flows, wireframes, prototypes, and testable hypotheses
• Own UX across full product development cycles - from discovery and strategy through launch and iteration
• Design and execute A/B tests and usability studies to improve conversion, engagement, and member satisfaction
• Partner with marketing and product to align experience design with member needs and business goals
• Collaborate closely with engineering to ship high-quality UI with attention to detail
• Contribute to and help evolve our design system and component library in Figma
• Bring a perspective on what good looks like - and the craft to execute it
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• 4+ years of professional UX design experience (agency or in-house)
• A portfolio demonstrating strategic thinking, end-to-end process, and strong visual execution
• Expert-level Figma skills
• Hands-on experience with A/B testing and data-informed design iteration
• Strong written and verbal communication skills - you can present your thinking to stakeholders who aren't designers
• Demonstrated intellectual curiosity: you ask questions others don't, and you pursue answers independently
NICE TO HAVE
• Experience with VWO or similar A/B testing platforms
• Familiarity with Jira and agile product development workflows
• Comfort working with code or AI-assisted prototyping tools (vibe coding, Cursor, Windsurf, Claude Code, etc.)
• Agency background or experience across multiple industries or verticals
• Exposure to healthcare, professional associations, or membership organizations
WHAT WE OFFER
• Comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, and vision insurance
• Health Savings Account (HSA)
• Generous PTO and paid holidays
• 401(k) retirement plan
• Fully remote work environment
AAPC VALUES
• DRIVEN | Self-starts and stays highly motivated to achieve ambitious goals. Takes initiative without always being directed. Demonstrates confidence in decision-making.
• HUMBLE | Learns, adapts, and improves relentlessly. Seeks feedback without insecurity. Recognizes others' contributions gratefully.
• TRANSPARENT | Integrity-centered, honest, and trustworthy in all aspects of work. Holds self strictly accountable.
• SUPPORTIVE | Empowers and uplifts others. Listens actively and responds with empathy. Prioritizes well-being and growth of team members.
• INNOVATIVE | Entrepreneurial spirit with a scrappy mentality. Dreams big, sees opportunity, and finds ways to accomplish the impossible.
