What is remote medical billing?

Remote medical billing is the process of managing and submitting healthcare claims to insurance companies or payers from a location outside of a traditional medical office, often from home. Remote medical billers review patient records, assign billing codes, and ensure that all information is accurate to facilitate payment for medical services. This role requires strong attention to detail, familiarity with medical coding systems, and effective communication skills. Remote medical billing offers flexibility and is increasingly popular as healthcare organizations adopt digital solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote medical billing specialist?

To thrive as a Remote Medical Billing Specialist, you need a solid understanding of medical terminology, coding systems such as ICD-10 and CPT, and billing procedures, often supported by certification like the Certified Professional Biller (CPB). Proficiency in medical billing software, electronic health records (EHR), and insurance claim platforms is typically required. Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and clear communication are essential soft skills for managing complex billing tasks and collaborating remotely. These skills ensure accurate claim processing, timely reimbursements, and compliance with healthcare regulations.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in remote medical billing positions, and how can they be addressed?

Remote medical billing professionals often encounter challenges such as maintaining clear communication with healthcare providers and resolving billing discrepancies without in-person collaboration. It's important to establish regular check-ins with team members and utilize secure digital platforms to share updates and clarify questions. Staying organized, keeping up with frequently changing insurance policies, and proactively seeking training on new software can also help remote billers stay efficient and accurate in their work.

Remote medical billers typically earn between $15 and $25 per hour, with annual salaries ranging from approximately $30,000 to $60,000 depending on experience, certifications, and location. Job description

Your Opportunity

Behind every clean claim and resolved denial is a patient who can focus on getting better sleep instead of worrying about their bill. We're looking for a Medical Billing Team Lead to guide our remote team of Billing Associates within Revenue Cycle Management,ย  someone who brings clarity to complex billing work and helps their team do their best work every day.

You'll own the day-to-day of billing operations: accuracy, timeliness, and compliance across claims, collections, and denial management while mentoring a team that counts on you for guidance and support. This is a role for someone who leads with trust, keeps things simple even when the work isn't, and takes real ownership of outcomes. You'll report directly to the Director of Revenue Cycle.

What You'll Do
  • Team Supervision & Development
    • Directly supervise and support a team of Billing Associates, providing day-to-day guidance, workload distribution, and escalation support.
    • Onboard and train new billing staff on coding, claims, payer-specific rules, and internal workflows.
    • Conduct regular quality audits of team members' work, providing feedback and coaching to improve accuracy and clean claim rates.
    • Monitor individual and team performance against productivity and quality benchmarks; address performance issues proactively.
  • Billing Operations Oversight
    • Oversee the team's claims submission, coding accuracy, and adherence to payer-specific requirements.
    • Serve as the first point of escalation for complex claims, denials, and payer disputes the team cannot resolve independently.
    • Monitor AR aging, denial trends, and collections performance across the team; identify and address recurring issues.
    • Ensure timely, accurate account maintenance, and denial follow-up across the team's accounts.
  • Process & Compliance
    • Develop and maintain documented billing workflows and best practices for the team.
    • Stay current on coding updates, payer policy changes, and industry regulations; ensure the team is trained on relevant changes.
    • Support internal and external audits; implement corrective actions as needed.
    • Ensure the team adheres to HIPAA requirements and internal compliance protocols; escalate complex or sensitive issues to the Director as appropriate.
  • Reporting & Collaboration
    • Provide regular performance and productivity reporting to the Director of Revenue Cycle.
    • Collaborate with Payment Analysis, Charge Entry/Coding, and Credentialing functions to resolve cross-functional issues.
    • Serve as the billing team's point of contact with Care Coordinators on patient financial counseling matters such as benefits counseling, statements, balance inquiries, and payment plans while ensuring account and balance data in Apero stays accurate and current for those conversations.
    • Recommend process improvements and staffing adjustments based on team performance and volume trends.
  • Complete additional tasks as assigned.
What You Bring
  • 5+ years of experience in medical billing, including at least 2 years in a supervisory or management capacity.
  • Strong understanding of medical coding standards (ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS), billing workflows, denial management, and insurance claim processes.
  • Experience working with private medical practices or outpatient clinics preferred.
  • Experience in Sleep Medicine and/or DME billing strongly preferred.
  • Experience with Apero or similar practice management/billing software preferred.
  • Professional coding or billing certification (CPC, CCS, RHIT, RHIA, or CMRS) is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, and develop a remote team.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and strong analytical/problem-solving skills for complex claims and reimbursement issues.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience delivering performance feedback.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and support a team independently in a remote environment.
  • Genuine interest in sleep, health, and helping people better understand and improve their well-being
Our Core Values

At Sunrise Group, we keep things clear and simple , value trust and collaboration , and lead with optimism and compassion . These values guide everything we do.ย

What We Offerย

  • Meaningful work that directly improves peoples' lives
  • Be part of an international team across the US, France, Belgium
  • Annual team offsite
  • Comprehensive health benefits (medical, dental, vision)
  • FREE One Medical membership
  • 401(k) with company match
  • 20 days PTO + 10 paid holidays + 80 hours paid sick leave
  • Monthly phone and internet stipend

Compensation
