What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Mechanical Engineer using SolidWorks, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Mechanical Engineer specializing in SolidWorks, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering principles, experience with CAD modeling, and typically a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency in SolidWorks and familiarity with Product Data Management (PDM) systems or Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools are usually required, and certifications such as CSWP (Certified SolidWorks Professional) are highly valued. Strong problem-solving ability, self-motivation, and effective communication skills help you excel in remote collaboration and project management. These skills and qualifications ensure accurate designs, efficient teamwork, and successful project outcomes in a virtual work environment.

What are some common challenges faced by remote Mechanical Engineers using SolidWorks, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Mechanical Engineers working with SolidWorks often encounter challenges like collaborating effectively with team members, managing large CAD files, and ensuring version control. To address these, it's important to use cloud-based file sharing platforms, maintain clear documentation, and establish regular virtual meetings for design reviews. Many companies also implement Product Data Management (PDM) systems to streamline collaboration and prevent data loss or confusion over file versions. Proactive communication and leveraging collaboration tools help ensure that remote teams stay aligned and productive.

What does a Remote Mechanical Engineer using SolidWorks do?

A Remote Mechanical Engineer utilizing SolidWorks designs, develops, and tests mechanical components and systems, primarily using the SolidWorks CAD software from a remote location. They create 3D models, technical drawings, and simulations to ensure product functionality and manufacturability. Their work often involves collaborating with engineering teams, manufacturers, and clients virtually to deliver design solutions and improvements. This role requires strong technical knowledge, proficiency in SolidWorks, and effective communication skills for remote teamwork.

What is the difference between Remote Mechanical Engineer Solidworks vs Remote Mechanical Designer?

This position is a fully remote Mechanical Engineer responsible for designing and upgrading laser printing setups for customers in the food, beverage, pharmaceutical, and packaging equipment industries. The role encompasses a dynamic blend of field service and office work within the coding and marking division. The engineer will engage directly with clients, requiring strong communication skills and the ability to operate effectively in manufacturing plant environments. The position demands a balance between technical design work and customer-facing responsibilities, with travel expected to be between 25% and 50%. A flexible work style is essential to adapt to varying client needs and schedules.
Salary Range: $110,000 - $120,000 / Year DOE
Mechanical Engineer Responsibilities:
  • Conduct 60-70% mechanical design and related reviews, including custom accessories such as stands and shields
  • Perform 30-40% site surveys, customer meetings, and provide scoping and budgetary support alongside Account Managers
  • Travel to manufacturing facilities for solo on-site work, supporting installations, and field technicians
  • Maintain a balance between technical work and customer/sales-facing communication

Mechanical Engineer Requirements:
  • A valid completed four-year engineering degree with a preference for mechanical engineering
  • Mechanical engineering background with experience in 3D design
  • Customer-facing communication skills; not solely a backroom designer
  • Prior exposure to manufacturing plant environments and constraints

  • Comfortable operating independently on customer sites with a professional and flexible work style
  • Basic computer literacy and proficiency with CAD, with Inventor preferred; SolidWorks or Pro-E acceptable
  • Applications engineering for manufacturing facilities is preferred
  • Experience as a plant engineer, corporate engineer, OEM engineer, or sales engineer with a strong engineering focus is preferred
  • Industry exposure in food, beverage, pharma, or packaging equipment, specifically in coding and marking, is preferred

Benefits:
  • Two healthcare plans available: a traditional PPO plan and a high-deductible health plan
  • The healthcare provider is BCBS of Illinois
  • 401K with a 100% match on the first 4% and a 50% match on the next 2%
  • Standard PTO includes 10 vacation days, 5 sick days, and 2 floating holidays, with the potential for negotiation
