What does a remote mechanical engineer using SolidWorks do?

A Remote Mechanical Engineer utilizing SolidWorks designs, develops, and tests mechanical components and systems, primarily using the SolidWorks CAD software from a remote location. They create 3D models, technical drawings, and simulations to ensure product functionality and manufacturability. Their work often involves collaborating with engineering teams, manufacturers, and clients virtually to deliver design solutions and improvements. This role requires strong technical knowledge, proficiency in SolidWorks, and effective communication skills for remote teamwork.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote mechanical engineer using SolidWorks?

To thrive as a Remote Mechanical Engineer specializing in SolidWorks, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering principles, experience with CAD modeling, and typically a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency in SolidWorks and familiarity with Product Data Management (PDM) systems or Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools are usually required, and certifications such as CSWP (Certified SolidWorks Professional) are highly valued. Strong problem-solving ability, self-motivation, and effective communication skills help you excel in remote collaboration and project management. These skills and qualifications ensure accurate designs, efficient teamwork, and successful project outcomes in a virtual work environment.

What are some common challenges faced by remote mechanical engineers using SolidWorks, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Mechanical Engineers working with SolidWorks often encounter challenges like collaborating effectively with team members, managing large CAD files, and ensuring version control. To address these, it's important to use cloud-based file sharing platforms, maintain clear documentation, and establish regular virtual meetings for design reviews. Many companies also implement Product Data Management (PDM) systems to streamline collaboration and prevent data loss or confusion over file versions. Proactive communication and leveraging collaboration tools help ensure that remote teams stay aligned and productive.

What is the difference between Remote Mechanical Engineer Solidworks vs Remote Mechanical Designer?

AspectRemote Mechanical Engineer SolidworksRemote Mechanical Designer
CredentialsBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, Solidworks certification often preferredAssociate or Bachelor's in Mechanical Design or related field, Solidworks skills required
Work EnvironmentDesign, analyze, and develop mechanical systems using Solidworks, often in engineering teamsFocus on creating detailed 3D models and drawings, collaborating with engineers and manufacturing teams
Industry UsageEngineering firms, manufacturing, product developmentProduct design, prototyping, manufacturing companies

Remote Mechanical Engineer Solidworks roles typically involve engineering analysis and system development, while Remote Mechanical Designers focus on creating detailed models and drawings. Both roles require Solidworks skills but differ in scope and responsibilities.

Job description

Mechanical Engineer
Our client is looking for a 100% remote Mechanical Engineer for a 4-6 week project. This is a great opportunity for someone who is in between jobs or has the flexiblity to work both during business hours and evening or weekends.
Company Profile:
Engineering Firm
Mechanical Engineer Role:
We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to support engineering and design efforts for federal projects. This contract position will focus on reviewing, validating, and finalizing mechanical designs for custom fabricated equipment, on the structural and lifting analysis for that equipment, and on the heating, cooling, and ventilation load calculation for the containerized system those items are installed in.
The engineer will work remotely alongside designers, drafters, and electrical engineers to ensure engineering calculations, fabrication documentation, and project deliverables meet applicable codes, client specifications, and Quality Level 3 (QL-3) commercial grade requirements.
Mechanical Design and Fabrication
Review and validate existing mechanical designs created in SolidWorks, Inventor, and similar CAD platforms, including weldments, sheet metal, and multi-body assemblies.
Provide engineering oversight and technical direction to drafters and designers.
Review and produce fabrication drawings, weld schedules, inspection requirements, and general engineering notes suitable for release to a fabricator.
Review bills of material, fabrication packages, and engineering documentation prior to client submission.
Support engineering deliverables for custom fabricated laboratory equipment, shielding systems, glove boxes, and related mechanical assemblies.
Structural and Lifting Systems
Perform and validate structural analysis of fabricated weldments carrying high-density shielding, reporting maximum allowable distributed and point load, governing limit state, deflection, member and weld utilization, and anchorage reactions at each support.
Analyze the overhead hoist runway beam and its supporting framing for vertical, lateral, and longitudinal loads, including the complete load path from trolley through beam clamp into the container structure.
Confirm hoist, trolley, and runway compatibility, including rated capacity, flange range, impact allowance, and deflection limits.
Verify lifting attachments and hoist rings on equipment lifted as a complete unit, applying applicable ASME and AISC 360, AWS D1 standards in the analysis and resulting fabrication documentation.
HVAC, Cooling and Ventilation
Perform heating and cooling load calculations, accounting for the insulated envelope, solar gain on the container shell, and internal heat gains from equipment, lighting, and personnel.
Verify sizing of the portable, self contained air conditioning unit, including capacity derating at the actual condenser inlet temperature, condenser heat rejection path, room pressure effects, and condensate collection and removal.
Verify the ventilation arrangement against required air change rates and containment pressure differentials, including the wall mounted exhaust fan.
Update the mechanical specification to reflect calculation results.
Documentation and Review
Ensure engineering documentation complies with applicable codes, client specifications, and QL-3 commercial grade requirements.
Document assumptions, design conditions, references, and calculation basis suitable for QL-3 submittal and independent review.
Collaborate with electrical engineers throughout the design process and with an external structural engineer on shared load paths.
Participate in engineering reviews, issue formal comment logs, and resolve technical design questions.
Mechanical Engineer Background Profile:
Required
Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
8+ years of mechanical engineering experience, including 3+ years supporting custom fabricated equipment, weldments, or heavy fabrication.
Demonstrated experience performing, documenting, and defending structural and load calculations for fabricated equipment and lifting systems.
Demonstrated HVAC load calculation experience, including packaged or portable direct expansion cooling equipment.
Knowledge of SolidWorks, including Simulation, and comfortable working with STEP geometry.
U.S. citizenship and the ability to work independently in a fully remote engagement.
Preferred
Professional Engineer (PE) license.
Experience with overhead hoists or crane runway design.
Experience with below the hook and structural lifting devices.
Experience with containment ventilation, pressure cascade design, or negative pressure enclosures.
Experience with modular, containerized, or transportable facility systems.
Experience with commercial grade dedication and graded quality levels, ideally QL-3.
Experience reviewing and approving the work of CAD designers and drafters.
